Straw; vanity upon vanity.
Recommended movies are usually interesting to watch because you already have an idea of what the movie would look like. It’s now left to personal interest whether you like it or not.
I remember when I watched the movie titled “Treasure In The Sky” The movie was recommended by a friend who uploaded it on his status with the caption “If you want to cry, watch this movie”. I smiled and got in his DM, asked for the title, and promised him a drop of tear wouldn't fall from my face if I watched it.
I actually started watching it with the mindset that there are some scenes that might want to get me emotional. I was so much prepared for it but I couldn't find any. It was just a straightforward movie. Not until they brought the plot twist. It was almost about time they ended the movie and everything actually changed.
I almost cried but I didn't. It got me emotional, I knew someone who doesn’t have that strong mind would get more emotional watching it. But the movie was indeed an amazing one and the storyline too.
Last week another friend of mine ranted about the movie titled “Straw”. Her comment was that she didn't know why people watched the movie and cried so much. A drop of tears didn’t come from her eyes. The caption got me again and I decided to watch it to see the reason why the viewers cried while watching.
Straw
The plot was all about a single mother who had to pass through hardship just to make sure she got her only daughter satisfied. It started with how she was struggling to pay for her kid's lunch fee and medicals, down to paying her rent and also meeting up with her jobs. She works two different jobs yet can’t satisfy their needs.
The pressure got her into different scenarios and she was forced to do what she didn’t want to. She witnessed a robbery case and was accused of the robbery by her boss. Her self-defense turned her into a murderer who killed the robber and even her boss. She got her paycheck and then headed for the bank.
The bank didn’t attend to her well till she threatened with a gun and a bomb. She was accused of bank robbery and murder. The bank got the police involved and then an officer in charge realized she wasn’t guilty of her actions, saw her as a different person, and tried as much to help her.
In the end, she discovered that her daughter whom she tried and risked almost everything for was dead. So all of the struggles and suffering, the pains and embarrassment, all of them were in vain. She gave up being arrested and had to face her term in jail for her actions.
My criticism
At some point, the movie got me emotional, through her suffering and endurance. But the spoiler in it was why she had to go too far just because of the daughter. Not to the extent of becoming a murderer. If the child should be alive and get to see the mum that way it won't be a good one for her.
Also, it's hard to believe that her daughter died in the end despite all she went through. Had it been her daughter was alive and reunited back in a better position then it would have given it a happy ending to compensate for the tragedies.
The last was the background music. There was no background music that would even make the movie more emotional to watch. Sometimes those music is what keeps the vibes going and alive.
In conclusion
Rating this movie on a scale of 10 I will give it a 7/10. The actors did well. It also has a fair plot.
