The expectations of many were high with how the first movie went, and while I remember liking it quite a bit as well, I was heading out to the theater like it was any other movie day to see how this time around, accompanied by friends and my brother, having already seen at least one or two trailers with the plot of Miles somehow ending up in a Spider-Man multiverse and being chased by them.

...And truth be told, the movie gave me much, much more out of it than I expected.

Peak spectacle in every way

If you have seen any of the trailers, I must tell you that just what you see there doesn't do justice to the range and creativity that this movie has with its presentation.

I'm going to start first without spoilers to highlight those strong points that the film achieves, and what may stand out first for anyone who sees it is nothing more and nothing less than how it integrates those different but very defined artistic styles in a 3D environment, using the best of the known effects and styles in ink and paper mixed with the power of modern technology.

The attention to detail is what gives that extra touch of creativity on display: Not only do you see a variety of different versions of Spider-Man, but each comes with their own unique ways of looking in style, whether it's in variations of how they're shaded with sharp lines, whether they look like they came out of a game with a simple style, whether they're disguised to look like drawings...and there are even a few surprises I won't mention.

But outside of the visual style and the creative use of comic book sound effects (You know, those POW, WHACK, and such effects in large impacts, as well as more subtle details with small text. There was a moment where it even comes out "Helvetica" and "Bold" 😂), that's the icing on the cake which is the super dynamic action presented by the story...which is also accompanied with an amazing soundtrack.

The entire soundtrack of the movie is officially available to listen to, but to avoid spoilers both by song names and what could be inferred by listening to them, I leave you with this song that comes on (in instrumental form) for one of the fights in the trailer...and I was literally jumping in my chair from how awesome it was to hear that watching the battle royal that was on the big screen.

More impactful twists than a Hot Wheels road.

It's impressive how the plot starts to develop from little things that happen at the beginning or even happen before the movie: While the best way to experience the movie with its twists is to have seen the first one and not seen the trailers (or to not remember them before watching), the things you see presented in the latest trailer either have additional context in the movie itself or are sneakily camouflaged in a way that wouldn't say much on their own.

From how Gwen Stacy is able to invite Miles into a world with other Spider-Man, the reason for the chases, what Miles has to deal with living a double life of himself and being Spider-Man, to the motivations of each character...everything you see in trailers of Miles taking on the world in his own way has a pretty well done backstory with the time of the movie that is worth watching with all the surprises it brings. And having recently watched the first film to refresh my memory, I can comment that it has more of the details of Miles and his family in mind.

The film makes great use of the time it has to set up each scene without feeling empty by being too short for subtext, nor too long that it feels like it's stretching out without much to contribute in any way. And by the time you get to the end of it...you feel like somehow it was too much...and yet not enough. But since that would be going into yellow-tape territory, this much I can say....

It's a movie worth the price of admission, every penny.

It's completely worth seeing to see how they make a feast for the eyes and ears with a madness of action scenes made real thanks to the animation as there are a few things beyond the visual style it adds to the scenes, or they are very highlighted thanks to it, or just work to great effect because of it, and yes you have to see it if you've had the joy of not watching spoilers as far as you can make it. It also makes for a great contrast the very varied different settings and artstyles on the enviroments alongside Miles's self-discovery of courage compared to the first movie not moving too far away from Brooklyn (but enhanced by the action at forefront being really enhanced by the stylization) while he struggles to adapt being Spider-Man in first place.

Well if you're crossing this line, it's because you've already had the good fortune to have seen this movie :)

From pathetic blob to dangerous monster.

How The Spot goes from being the butt-joke of the week both in the trailers and in the beginning of the movie, to soon revealing his anger and motives for keeping Miles as his nemesis by being THAT scientist who got hit with a bagel...and ended up that way because of the reactor incident in the last movie. And after accidentally discovering that he has an ability to cross dimensions with his portals (in which we even see a LEGO one), he decides to increase his power.

And boy does he do it, escaping to a different dimension dodging FOUR Spider-Man at the same time to get to Alchemax's lab in that universe to increase his power, completely ready to stop being a joke, changing his appearance and giving Miles a premonition of two crucial events in the story...not to mention that as he disappears with the promise of taking everything away from Miles, his latest form looks pretty deranged but powerful (instead of being a white being with black portal spots, it's a black void being with white squiggles).

So moving on to the plot....

Miles Morales vs The Canon

The fact that the plot accidentally happens due to the fact that Gwen decides to visit Miles while searching for The Blob (since he was causing anomalies detected by the Spider-Man society) and Miles ends up chasing her to a Spider-Man universe in India, is where the crucial dilemma of the story leads to: When Miles manages to save a girl and a police captain at the same time, he is informed by Spider-Man 2099 (leader of the society to avoid spacetime anomalies) that the destabilization of that world was due to his actions:

Canon states that the police captain had to die there as well as other deaths that happened to other Spider-Man loved ones stated to be inevitable, and that he must do no more than accept the canonical event of soon losing his father due to him becoming a police captain. And just as Miles struggled in his own way to do what he did in the first installment, here he faces Miguel O'Hara and what's after him by refusing to accept that something like that must happen because "its canonical".

That struck me as a very interesting detail with the theme that something always has to happen to old Spider-Man in almost every possible story, and that both this is a key plot point (or in other words, *that it's a universal and canonical fact that Spider-Man is bound to lose some loved ones) and that Miles is going to fight back against that convention is pretty creative for this movie.

And in parts of references, in that moment that shows him the other lines with those canonical tragic events, even Uncle Ben dying in Tobey McGuire's first Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man crying with the death of Captain Stacy, and two or three Spider-Man from animated series are shown in the portals. It's one thing for Sony to have permission to do that, but it's another thing for the filmmakers to come up with that and get the thumbs up from them; what a surprise.

Speaking of references...

Wait a minute, I know them!

Sure, the movie with a lot of Spider-Man from other universes is the one that's full of references. Apart from them being references in themselves, some I found interesting as the Spider-Man seen from video games, the Spider-Man of the 60's appearing and staying frozen in the chase for being... the Spider-Man of the 60's little animated, the aforementioned Spider-Man from the LEGO universe that actually only appears when La Mancha explores the other universes. That and at one point we see the Prowler locked up...in Live Action form, which we not only saw in Homecoming as a "normal" guy selling guns, but also fits with the confirmation of a Miles Morales live-action movie.

There are also details that are background like Miles' friend being seen playing PS5 Spider-Man on his computer, as similarities to the previous movie in shots like when in the first one, Miles is seen placing a record and turning up the volume on a mixer in one shot, and in another has Peter from another universe strapped into a punching bag....

...And those last two I mention because....

OH NO

That Miles managed to escape in the end thanks to the machine that sends those who enter there to his universe and to seek to save his father from this possibly "canonical" tragic ending was a relief.

Listening to somewhat strange but subtle music in the background as Miles thought about how to tell his mother that he was Spider-Man was...curious.

Seeing that his mother doesn't take him seriously and doesn't even seem to know Spider-Man was strange, but when we saw Gwen meet Miles' parents, that's when it became obvious. Something very bad.

Miles was sent to the universe from which the spider that bit him came from (which is another reason he was persecuted; he was never meant to be Spider-Man) instead of where he lived...and since the spider that was supposed to bite Spider-Man in that universe was lost...there was no Spider-Man.

And if there was no Spider-Man, there was no one to save the city from crime, no one to stop Aaron when he was playing the Prowler....

He ended up in the universe where his father was dead, and Aaron being alive, turned Miles into a Prowler as well.

All this while we see Aaron put on a record and turn up the volume as Miles begged for an explanation tied up in a punching bag, and in those last shots seeing The Spot show up again, Gwen along with the others Spider-Man who appeared in the first movie who hadn't shown up until now (and the new Spider-Man who befriended Miles) ready to save him, and Miles determined, losing his fear after the entire chase of this movie, to free himself by charging his hand with electricity....

Apparently the next one is coming in March, less than a year away, but it's still going to be a big, big wait to see how this story ends.

Conclusion

It's been a long time since there was a twist that caught me so off guard (that Miles didn't end up where he was supposed to at the end) as well as left me in suspense this big.... with everything I told without spoilers and what I just told with spoilers, I think I already made it clear that I thought this was a tremendous movie, and even more after having the refreshment of going back to the first movie seeing the development of the beginning of Miles until now that he is ready for what looks like a great war between his evil self, that super powered nemesis, and the Spiderman 2099 that is still looking for him.

And what else can I say?

A tremendous song for the finale (which uses the roars of the Prowler theme, back as never before), and a tremendous song to end this review here.

Las expectativas de muchos estaban altas con como fue la primera película, y mientras que recuerdo que me gustó bastante también, estaba saliendo al cine como si fuera cualquier otro día de película a ver que tal lo de esta ocasión, acompañado por amigos y mi hermano, habiendo ya visto al menos uno o dos trailers con la trama de Miles de alguna forma terminando en un multiverso de Spider-Man y siendo perseguidos por ellos.

...Y la verdad que la película se sacó mucho, mucho más de lo que esperaba.

El pico del espectáculo en todos los sentidos

Si han visto alguno de los trailers, debo decirles que solo lo que ven ahí no le hace justicia al rango y creatividad que tiene esta película con su presentación.

Voy a empezar primero sin spoilers para destacar esos puntos fuertes que logra la película, y lo que puede destacar de primero para quien lo vea es nada más y nada menos que el como integra esos diferentes estilos artísticos pero muy definidos en un ambiente 3D, usando lo mejor de los efectos y estilos conocidos en tinta y papel mezclados con el poder de la tecnología moderna.

La atención al detalle es lo que le da ese toque extra a la creatividad en despliegue: No solo ves una variedad de versiones diferentes de Spiderman, sino que cada uno viene con sus propias formas de verse en estilo, sea en variaciones de como se les aplica el shading con líneas marcadas, si se ven salidos de un juego con un estilo simple, si se disfrazan para parecer dibujos...y hasta hay algunas sorpresas que no les mencionaré.

Pero fuera del estilo visual y el uso creativo de efectos de sonido salidos de cómic (Ya sabes, esos efectos de POW, WHACK, y tal en impactos grandes, así como detalles más sutiles con textos pequeños. Había un momento en el que hasta sale "Helvetica" y "Bold" 😂), esa es la guinda del pastel que es la acción super dinámica presentada por la historia...la cual también viene acompañada con una banda sonora increíble.

La banda sonora entera de la película esta oficialmente disponible para escuchar, pero para evitar spoilers tanto por nombre de canciones como por lo que podría inferirse por escucharlas, les dejo esta canción que sale (en forma instrumental) para una de las peleas en el trailer...y literal estuve saltando en mi silla de lo increíble que era escuchar eso viendo el battle royal que estaba en la gran pantalla.

Más giros de impacto que una carretera de Hot Wheels

Es impresionante como la trama se empieza desarrollar de cosas pequeñas que suceden al inicio o hasta suceden antes de la película: Mientras que la mejor forma de experimentar la película con sus giros es habiendo visto la primera y sin haber visto los trailers (o que no te acuerdes de ellas antes de verlo), las cosas que ves presentadas en el último trailer o tienen un contexto adicional en la película misma o son camufladas sigilosamente de forma que no dirían mucho por si solas.

Del cómo Gwen Stacy es capaz de invitar a Miles a un mundo con otros Spider-Man, el motivo de las persecuciones, lo que tiene que enfrentar Miles al vivir una doble vida de él mismo y ser Spider-Man, a las motivaciones de cada personaje...todo lo que ves en trailers de Miles enfrentándose al mundo a su manera tiene un transfondo bastante bien logrado con el tiempo de la película que vale la pena ver con todas las sorpresas que trae. Y habiendo recientemente visto la primera película para refrescarme la memoria, puedo comentar que se tiene más presente los detalles de Miles y su familia.

La película utiliza de gran manera el tiempo que tiene para establecer cada escena sin que se sienta vacía al ser muy corta para subtexto, ni muy larga que se sienta que se esta extendiendo sin mucho que aportar de alguna manera. Y al momento de que llegas a terminarla...sientes que de alguna forma fue mucho...y a la vez no fue suficiente. Pero ya que eso sería entrar en el territorio con cinta amarilla, hasta aquí puedo decir que...

Es una película que vale el precio de la entrada, cada centavo.

Vale completamente la pena verla para ver como hacen un festín para los ojos y oídos con una locura de escenas de acción hechas realidad gracias a la animación ya que hay unas muchas cosas mas allá del estilo visual que agrega a las escenas, o son muy resaltadas gracias a ella, o solo funcionan a gran efecto debido a ella, y si que tienes que verlo si has tenido la dicha de no ver spoilers hasta el momento que puedas hacerlo. También hace un gran contraste con los lugares muy variados y diseños diferentes en ellos junto con el autodescubrimiento de Miles y su coraje, comparado con la primera película que no se aleja mucho de Brooklyn (pero mejorado con la acción en frente gracias a la estilización) mientras que lucha para adaptarse a ser un Spider-Man por primera vez.

De mancha patética a monstruo peligroso

El cómo La Mancha pasa este sujeto a ser del hasmereir de la semana tanto en los trailers como en el inicio de la película, a pronto revelar su ira y motivos para guardar a Miles como su némesis al ser ESE científico que golpearon con un bagel...y terminó de esa forma por el incidente con el reactor de la película pasada. Y tras accidentalmente ver qué tiene una habilidad para cruzar dimensiones con sus portales (en el cual hasta vemos uno de LEGO), decide aumentar su poder.

Y vaya que lo hace, escapando a una dimensión distinta esquivando a CUATRO Spiderman al mismo tiempo para llegar al laboratorio de Alchemax en ese universo para aumentar su poder, completamente listo para dejar de ser un chiste, cambiando su apariencia y dando una premonición de dos sucesos cruciales en la historia...sin hablar de que mientras desaparece con la promesa de arrebatarle todo a Miles, su última forma se ve bastante desquiciada pero poderosa (en vez de ser un ser blanco con manchas negras de portales, es un ser de vacío negro con garabatos blancos).

Entonces pasando al tema de la trama...

Miles Morales vs El Canon

El hecho de que la trama sucede accidentalmente por el hecho de que Gwen decide visitar a Miles mientras que busca a La Mancha (ya que causaba anomalías detectadas por la sociedad de los Spiderman) y Miles termina persiguiéndola a un universo de un Spider-Man en India, es a donde lleva el dilema crucial de la historia: Cuando Miles logra salvar a una niña y a un detective al mismo tiempo, el es informado por el Spiderman 2099 (líder de la sociedad para evitar anomalías de espacio tiempo) que la desestabilización de ese mundo fue debido a sus acciones:

El canon establece que debía morir ese capitán de policía así como otras muertes que le sucedieron a otros seres queridos de los Spiderman eran inevitables, y que no debe hacer más que aceptar el evento canónico que viene de perder a su padre debido a que se convirtió en capitán de policía. Y de la misma forma que Miles luchó a su manera para hacer lo que hizo en la primera entrega, aquí se enfrenta a Miguel O'Hara y a lo que lo persiguen al rehusarse a aceptar que algo así sea canónico y deba pasar.

Eso me pareció un detalle muy interesante con el tema de que siempre algo ha de pasarle al viejo Spider-Man en casi todas las historias posibles, y que tanto esto sea un punto clave de la historia (o en otras palabras, *que sea un hecho universal y canónico que Spider-Man esta obligado a perder algunos seres queridos) como eso que Miles va a luchar en contra es bastante creativo para esta película.

Y en partes de referencias, en ese momento que le muestra las otras líneas con esos eventos trágicos canónicos, hasta se muestran en los portales al Tío Ben muriendo en el primer Spider-Man de Tobey McGuire, al Spiderman de Andrew Garfield llorando con la muerte del Capitán Stacy, y dos o tres Spider-Man de series animadas. Una cosa es el hecho que Sony tenga el permiso de hacer eso, pero otra cosa es que se les ocurriera a los directores hacer eso y que les dieran el buen visto; tremenda sorpresa.

Hablando de referencias...

Un momento, yo los conozco!

Claro, la película con muchos Spider-Man de otros universos es la que esta llena de referencias. Quitando que ellos de por sí sean referencias, algunos me parecieron interesantes como los Spider-Man que se ven de videojuegos, el Spider-Man de los 60 apareciendo y quedándose congelado en la persecución por ser...el Spider-Man de los 60 poco animado, el antes mencionado Spider-Man del universo LEGO que de hecho solo aparece cuando La Mancha explora los otros universo. Eso y que en un momento vemos encerrado al Merodeador...en forma de Live Action, el cual no solo vimos en Homecoming como un sujeto "normal" vendiendo armas, sino que también cuadra con la confirmación de una película live-action de Miles Morales.

También hay detalles que son de fondo como que se vea al amigo de Miles jugando al Spider-Man de PS5 en su computadora, como similitudes a la película anterior en tomas como cuando en la primera, se ven a Miles colocando un disco y subiendo el volumen en un mezclador en una toma, y en otra tiene al Peter de otro universo atado en un saco de boxeo...

...Y esos últimos dos los menciono por...

OH NO

Que Miles lograra escapar al final gracias a la máquina que envía a su universo a quienes entran ahí y para buscar salvar a su padre de este posible final trágico "canónico" era un alivio.

Escuchar una música algo extraña pero sutil de fondo mientras que Miles pensaba en como decirle a su madre que era Spider-Man era...curioso.

Ver que su madre no le toma enserio y ni parece conocer a Spider-Man si que era extraño, pero cuando vimos a Gwen encontrarse con los padres de Miles, ahí se volvió algo evidente. Algo muy malo.

Miles fue enviado al universo del cual venía la araña que lo picó (el cual es otra razón por la cual era perseguido; nunca fue destinado a ser Spider-Man) en vez de donde vivía...y ya que la araña que debía picar a Spider-Man en ese universo se perdió...no existió un Spider-Man.

Y si no existió un Spider-Man, no existió alguien que salvara a la ciudad del crimen, ni que detuviera a Aaron cuando hacía del Merodeador...

Terminó en el universo donde su padre estaba muerto, y Aaron siguiendo vivo, convirtió a Miles en un Merodeador también.

Todo esto mientras vemos a Aaron colocar un disco y subir el volumen mientras Miles suplicaba una explicación amarrado en un saco de boxeo, y en esas últimas tomas viendo a La Mancha aparecer de nuevo, a Gwen junto con los Spider-Man que aparecieron en la primera película que no habían aparecido hasta ahora (y los Spider-Man que se hicieron amigos de Miles) preparados para salvarlo, y a Miles determinado, perdiendo el miedo después de la persecución entera de esta película, para liberarse cargando su mano con electricidad...

Y SE ACABÓ

CONTINUARÁ

En uno de los trailer salía al final que esto era "Parte Uno", pero estoy seguro que casi nadie recordaba eso y perdieron los estribos cuando quedaron en tremendo cliffhanger; varios de nosotros gritamos y hasta uno en el cine dijo "NI ELLA TE MINTIÓ TANTO" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Al parecer la siguiente viene en Marzo, menos de un año, pero aun así va a ser una gran, gran espera para ver como termina esta historia.

Conclusión

Hacía tiempo que no había un giro que me agarraba tan desprevenido (eso que al final Miles no terminara en donde debía) así como me dejaran en un suspenso así de grande...con todo lo que conté sin spoilers y lo que acabo de contar con spoilers, creo que ya dejé en claro que esto me pareció tremendo peliculón, y aún más después de tener el refrescado de regresar a la primera película viendo el desarrollo del inicio de Miles hasta ahora que esta listo para lo que parece una gran guerra entre su yo malvado, ese némesis super potenciado, y al Spiderman 2099 que sigue buscándolo.

Y que más puedo decir?

Una tremenda canción para el final (que usa los rugidos del tema del Merodeador, de vuelta como nunca antes), y una tremenda canción para aquí terminar esta reseña.
