While I don't have as much to complain on and on like with some aspects of the FNAF2 movie from last time, the title may have given away one of the key things that stuck out from this movie to me.

I haven't watched the other Tron movies from what I remember, so while my experience here is limited to what the movie itself present [besides picking up a cue with a legacy character by looking it up], it doesn't take a Tron expert to see the funny holes of the plot on this one - let alone someone who may have been watching every Tron movie and then run into this one.

But alright, let's get to that immediately.

Jared Leto the Master Control Program

So I did some research to find out that this Master Control Program name stems from the original Tron's villain, but here it basically seems to play the role of the lead behind every other AI on Dillinger's network.

With an initial scene of this suited man fending off several practice dummies with a disc, this MCP gets presented to shareholders at Dillinger System as Ares...and that is where you see Jared Leto's face for the first time.

Now I know that I'm bringing it up too much, but its feels a bit distracting that from that point onwards, you can start to see his signs of sentience as he reads the room, cracks a joke about the rain, then starts pondering about Julian Dillinger [current owner] stating that they are dispensable.

...And right from the get go, that's how early paints you a picture of what he's going to do later, mainly from a later event.

For whatever reason, as it isn't really explained why is this, Ares in-universe is so highly sophisticated in programming that, even when Julian tells the shareholders he can be controlled, shows emotions and concern for life (to Julian's annoyance) and even breaks his role as a villain enforcer later.

He also has like, three or four scenes where he has to mention he likes 80s pop music, particularly Depeche Mode.

So I could say it is arguably goofy how so many aspects of the character contrast each other: The Ares program looking like Jared Leto without any makeup or special hairstyle for whatever reason, him having some sense of humor and emotions but almost always delivering lines without much emotion, and the idea that Julian Dillinger somehow made such a sentient artificial intelligence, only to be mad it's sentient to having emotions and go against his wishes in the first place.

Dude PROGRAMMED Ares to existence, yet never managed to give it an actual safeguard, limiter or killswitch to stop him from rebelling at any point.

And with that, I can now go to talking about some of the...general plot. Once again, skipping here and there, but bringing up most of the noticeable plot beats.

Cartoonish evil innovator wannabe vs someone with a dream

You get introduced to Dillinger Systems first to be introduced to Ares, yet you can tell they are the bad guys with Julian's ego, promises to make money by creating AI soldiers, and even Julian's mom scolding him for promising them to be permanent when he didn't have that code yet.

The main premise is about this guy wanting that code for those materialized things [soldiers, vehicles, etc] to last longer than 29 minutes, while on a remote place, Eve Kim from ENCOM digs into Kevin Flynn's files (and for the record, Flynn is basically a long-time character, being the protagonist in the first Tron and so on) and finds the permanence code, testing it with a generated orange tree, then celebrating and heading to the ENCOM building with the code on a thumb drive as the orange tree passes 4 hours without dissolving into nothing.

Long story short, with an attempt from Dillinger to hack into ENCOM's systems to find information about the permanence code, not only Ares gets in and managed to scroll through all of Eve Kim's information on her phone and such, which results in him learning about her life and even what happened to her sister alluded previously (was a genius, made the hideout Eve was at early on, but passed away from a terminal illness), and also results in him trying to save a hurt fellow program, only for Dillinger to plug them out and state he got deleted by failing.

As Dillinger later materializes both Ares and fellow program Athena to chase Eve Kim in the real world and is stuck on a pier bridge, Eve throws the USB drive away as Ares confronts her, only to get digitized into Dillinger's network with a laser from an helicopter.

With the alternative to get the code basically being to transform her into raw data in the network (killing her), Ares has that one -two of having seen Eve's life (empathizing with her) and remembering that partner be deleted mercilessly (emphasizing Dillinger's lack of care for life if its in the way of his goal), doing a heel-turn and helping her escape the network.

More escaping to find the permanence code for Ares to stay alive, he gets put into Flynn's computer to find the code, getting to see an homage of the original Tron's visuals and finding a visage of Kevin Flynn himself being impressed by Ares's individuality and eventually getting to go rescue Kim.

And that is because Athena keeps getting sent by Dillinger to get her for the code once, fails to kill her in time because she gets stuck feeling water from a sprinkler (no joke), and in anger, she starts the materializing process herself to return, creating a giant spaceship and even killing Julian's mom for trying to shut the whole thing down, only looking to achieve the directive of getting the code at all costs.

After a fight that I could summarize but you can guess that Ares obviously wins, Eve has her happy ending with her many generated orange trees (...and also creating cures for terminal illnesses), Jared Leto- I mean Ares is travelling to learn more of the world but sent a postal to Eve greeting her...

...And Dillinger, about to get arrested, sets the materializing program in reverse to digitize him into his own network. Looks in disbelief at the disarray of his network, a disc pops up from the floor, he takes it and the movie ends.

Uhh...

...Yeah, and that was the shortened summary.

So what are my thoughts on all that?

Some of the effects do look cool, like these lit-up RGB-esque bikes and vehicles that are made from Dillinger, as well as the spears and bikes leaving solid trails [the bike ones in particular being shown to cause a lot of wrecks with cars on the street], and it was somewhat interesting to see the few moments with close disc fighting, although you could also argue it turns more into a circular knife fight than a disc fight [as, if I remember well, there isn't a single disc thrown].

But the plot is what it is - beyond Ares being sentient enough (and conveniently empathic, despite being programmed by the main villain) to end up helping the good guys, Athena is a classic case of going from Julian's enforcer to becoming a somewhat rogue AI wanting to do the order she was given, which is ironic given its how Julian was behaving most of the movie...until Athena starts making big stuff and kill his mother.

The rest of the characters either don't get that much presence (like Eve's friends who help her at times) or aren't very interesting to talk about in the first place. Eve Kim in particular, despite being a protagonist, does feel more like a sidekick the moment Ares joins her side, as she (as a normal human, obviously) can't do much but to escape with her bike whenever these things come for her.

And beforehand, there's some allusions to Eve's purpose being mainly given or fulfilled by others: The research for permanence code being for her sister Tess in the first place [hinted with a photo and mentions, but we don't see what happened to her until Ares finds out], and then the code happening to be discoverable twice exclusively at the servers of the late Kevin Flynn...who as I mentioned sometime ago, is quite an important character in the Tron franchise, but if you didn't watch those, then you wouldn't get why that guy happened to have such a McGuffin casually hiding on his stuff.

Conclusion

I don't know. I guess that at most, it was a movie that does what it does to get distracted, with some cool visual effects overall, and I didn't end up paying a dime to watch it - but I can see how lackluster it must have been not only as a movie to watch on theaters on a big screen with expectations, but especially assuming that you were someone that watched previous Tron movies, and that those were far more interesting in their plot and action.

If anything, while I guess I could say is a movie I could say I have watched, maybe it will be one of those that I won't remember much of sometime later. It does have to be a quite rough spot of when a movie isn't either good enough to be memorable by qualities, or even bad (intentionally or not) enough to be somehow entertaining (Tarantino's Planet Terror and Death Proof).

Because, you know, if a movie is just...okay, not good enough to be talked about for that much, yet not bad enough to have stuff to remember and laugh about, then its likely not going to be memorable enough to be a movie for you to remember. And mind you that I've even mostly forgot about the FNAF2 movie I've mostly forgot the details already, besides the stuff I complained about last time 😂

Primero te presentan a Dillinger Systems para luego presentarte a Ares, pero se nota que son los malos por el ego de Julian, sus promesas de ganar dinero creando soldados de IA e incluso por el hecho de que la madre de Julian le regaña por prometerles que serán permanentes cuando aún no tiene ese código.

¿Qué opino de todo esto?

En todo caso, aunque podría decir que es una película que he visto, quizá sea una de esas que no recordaré mucho más adelante. Tiene que ser un momento bastante difícil cuando una película no es lo suficientemente buena como para ser memorable por sus cualidades, ni lo suficientemente mala (intencionadamente o no) como para ser de alguna manera entretenida (Planet Terror y Death Proof, de Tarantino).

Porque, ya sabes, si una película es simplemente... ahí mas o menos, no lo suficientemente buena como para hablar mucho de ella, pero tampoco tan mala como para tener cosas que recordar y de las que reírse, entonces es probable que no sea lo suficientemente memorable como para que la recuerdes. Y ten en cuenta que incluso yo ya he olvidado casi por completo la película FNAF2, ya he olvidado la mayoría de los detalles, aparte de las cosas de las que me quejé la última vez 😂
