A Discovery of Witches/ Review

I really enjoy the fantasy genre, but if it is sprinkled with some drama, romance and suspense, so much the better, so a few days ago among so many possibilities in the Netflix catalog I found a series that caught my attention what I did not know was that it is based on a series of novels by author Deborah Harkness whose trilogy is known as Trilogy of All Souls. It is from one of these books that the series takes its name.

Now, this series tells the story of a young woman named Diana Bishop a Yale scholar with Witches ancestry, but presumed to have no power, has lived her whole life knowing that witchcraft exists, but has been dedicated to having a normal life, but everything changes one day in the Oxford Library where she discovers a lost manuscript and after starting to examine it causes a magical reaction so strong that manages to be perceived by all the creatures nearby and also attracts the attention of others who have been looking for the manuscript for centuries.

From that moment on Diana's life changes completely, as she begins to be stalked by a mysterious man, Matthew Clairmont, who is a vampire. At first their relationship is difficult, but they end up falling in love, which complicates the situation even more, since there is a 900 year old pact that forbids the relationship between species.

Diana, seeing that her life is in danger and realizing that her magical power was not null or little, Diana begins to seek how to relate more with her legacy and thus begins for her and those around her a battle against the pact, those who want in book and power.

Being a series, each chapter presents us with different characters, beliefs and also suspense and intrigue, in addition to walking us through different places, mainly in Europe.

In this series I liked that the creatures that remained, in this case three species vampires, witches and demons have a council that governs the decisions, in which there is supposed to be equality, but it is practically dominated by vampires followed by witches, marginalizing the demons.

They do not present also, how among each species there are some beings stronger than others, and how with the passage of time, each of the species is being affected in different ways. In addition, it is notable that in the time being lost much information of what is the content of the book.

Of the actors, Matthew Goode, who plays Matthew Clermont, stands out, as does Trevor Eve's performance as Gerbert. I loved seeing James Purefoy as Philippe Clermont. As for characters, Gallowglass played by Steven Cree fascinated me, a part Nordic, part Scottish vampire from Ireland.

As protagonist we have Teresa Palmer, who in some aspects of her character performs well, changes the way those who meet her think and behave. But in others she falls short. For example, when she performs hand movements to cast spells, she seems to lack passion in that part of the performance.

This series is mostly fantasy, but it has its dark things that made me think, for example, why in so many series and movies relate New Orleans with beings like vampires, at the same time can not avoid comparing it with other sagas like Twilight, but in general although sometimes its effects are not the best is interesting to watch, as it immerses us in a world full of intrigue, mystery and even science, as it comes to find some solutions to problems by studying DNA.

Finally, The Discovery of the Witches with three seasons in an option to have a good time, I do not know if a fourth season will come, as there is a book after the three that were recreated in this series, but it is certainly a good option, which in the middle of its second season also gives us a bit of time, as they travel to the sixteenth century.

  Disfruto mucho del género fantasía, pero si está salpicado con algo de drama, romance y suspenso, pues mejor, así hace unos días entre tantas posibilidades del catálogo de Netflix encontré una serie que llamo mi atención lo que desconocía era que está basada en una serie de novelas de la autora Deborah Harkness cuya trilogía es conocida como Trilogía de Todas las Almas. De uno de estos libros es que toma la serie su nombre

El descubrimiento de las brujas

Ahora bien, esta serie nos narra la historia de una joven mujer de nombre Diana Bishop una académica de Yale con ascendencia de Brujos, pero que se presume no tiene poder, ha vivido toda su vida conociendo que existe la brujería, pero se ha dedicado a tener una vida normal, pero todo cambia un día en la Biblioteca de Oxford donde descubre un manuscrito perdido y tras comenzar a examinarlo causa una reacción mágica tan fuerte que logra ser percibida por todas las criaturas cercanas y además atrae la atención de otros que han estado buscando el manuscrito durante siglos.

Desde ese momento la vida de Diana cambia por completo, ya que comienza a ser digamos que acosada por un misterioso hombre Matthew Clairmont, quien es un vampiro, al principio su relación es difícil, pero terminan enamorados, lo que complica aún más la situación, ya que hay un pacto desde hace 900 años que prohíbe la relación entre especies.

Diana, al ver que su vida corre peligro y percatarse de que su poder mágico no era nulo o poco, Diana comienza a buscar como relacionarse más con su legado y así comienza tanto para ella como para quienes la rodean una batalla en contra del pacto, los que desean en libro y poder.

Al ser una serie, cada capítulo nos presenta diversos personajes, creencias y también suspenso e intriga, además de pasearnos por diferentes lugares, principalmente en Europa.

De esta serie me gusto el que las criaturas que quedaban, en este caso tres especies vampiros, brujas y demonios tienen un consejo que rige las decisiones, en el que se supone debería existir igualdad, pero que es prácticamente dominado por los vampiros seguidos de las brujas, marginando a los demonios

No presentan también, como entre cada especie hay unos seres más fuertes que otros, y como con el paso del tiempo, cada una de las especies está siendo afectada de diferentes maneras. Además, es notable que en el tiempo ser perdió mucha información de lo que es el contenido del libro.

De los actores destacan Matthew Goode, quien interpreta a Matthew Clermont, también la interpretación de Trevor Eve como Gerbert. Me encanto ver al actor James Purefoy como Philippe Clermont. En cuanto a personajes, Gallowglass interpretado por Steven Cree me fascinó, un vampiro en parte nórdico y en parte escocés, procedente de Irlanda.

Como protagonista tenemos a Teresa Palmer, que en algunos aspectos de su personaje realiza un buen desempeño, cambia la forma de pensar y comportarse de quienes la conocen. Pero en otros se queda corta. Por ejemplo, cuando realiza movimientos de mano para realizar hechizos, pareciera faltarle pasión en esa parte de la actuación.

Esta serie que en buena parte fantasía, pero tiene sus cosas oscuras y que me hicieron pensar, por ejemplo en porque en tantas series y películas relacionan a New Orleans con seres como vampiros, al mismo tiempo no puede evitar compararla con otras sagas como Crepúsculo, pero en líneas generales aunque a veces sus efectos no son los mejores es interesante verla, ya que nos sumerge en un mundo lleno de intrigas misterio y hasta ciencia, ya que se llega a buscar algunas soluciones a problemas estudiando el ADN.

Finalmente, El Descubrimiento de las Brujas con tres temporadas en una opción para pasar un buen rato, desconozco si vendrá una cuarta temporada, ya que hay un libro posterior a los tres que se recrearon en esta serie, pero sin duda es una buena opción, la cual en medio de su segunda temporada nos da también un poco de época, ya que viajan al siglo XVI.
