Monster: The Ed Gein Story/ Romanticized schizophrenia

Some time ago, Netflix launched an anthology series called Monster, which tells the story of a different murderer each season. It began with The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, followed by The Menendez Brothers Story in its second season, and focused on The Ed Gein Story in its third season.

Of these three seasons, I have seen the last two, and I would like to dedicate this post to the third season, which, as I mentioned, focused on Ed Gein, whose murders inspired many films and shocked the world.

The series is set between the late 1940s and the 1950s and takes place mainly in the town where Ed grew up. This man grew up in a totally dysfunctional home. His father, who does not appear much in the series, was a violent alcoholic who physically and verbally abused Edward and his older brother. To complete this picture, his mother, Augusta Gein, was a religious fanatic who dominated him from childhood and taught him that sex was evil and a contaminating influence that he should avoid.

All of this led Edward to become psychologically unstable, as he struggled against what he felt, against what was natural. His father died in 1940, then his brother in 1944, and finally his mother in 1945. Left alone and unable to relate to others properly, he was overwhelmed by loneliness and his psychopathy began to surface.

Now, the series raises some unconfirmed issues surrounding this killer, such as whether he murdered his brother, which was not confirmed, or his close and unhealthy relationship with Adeline, the woman who existed, but many of the things that are suggested about his relationship with Ed in the series did not happen, which leads us to believe that he, as someone who suffered from schizophrenia, may have imagined some of the moments with her. Perhaps that is what the series actually wants to suggest, but some scenes are so vivid that we often do not know what really happened and what only happened in Gein's mind.

What is certain is that this man, whom his neighbors never suspected, as he even looked after many people's children, was a murderer and necrophiliac. When he was discovered and after everything that was found on his farm, he aroused a deep interest in psychology professionals, who were amazed by a case that combined necrophilia, fetishism, and transvestism. Let us remember that these events took place in the 1950s.

This series is quite raw, not suitable for children. It shows us that he was a mentally disturbed man, how his mother's extreme upbringing influenced him until the end, how he became a grave robber, murderer, and necrophiliac. Here we must recognize, above other aspects of the series, the incredible work of the actor who brought this character to life, Charlie Hunnam, who took care of all the details, the way he ran, walked, expressed himself, his voice. It is impressive how he brought to life scenes in which he gave himself pleasure dressed as a woman or when he wore the skin of his victims and danced, the appearance of the character, without forgetting the scenery around him, especially that which had to do with his home.

Another aspect that this series shows us is the number of films that emerged after his crimes were discovered, for example, Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Silence of the Lambs, among others, and also how he evolved after being admitted to the Mendota Mental Health Institute in Madison, where he spent the last years of his life after his trial and where he finally died in the 1980s.

In short, this is a series that not only shows us the crimes of a murderer and grave robber, but also how extreme parenting can deeply damage children, and how failing to heed the warning signs in time can be a mistake that can cause a person to end up being a threat to those around them. I'll leave you with my review and opinion here. I give this season of Monster a 6/10, as I romanticize the whole situation surrounding this character.

Hace ya un tiempo Netflix comenzó con una serie de antología titulada Monstruo, en cada temporada nos narrará los hechos ocurridos en torno a algún asesino, comenzó con La historia de Jeffrey Dahmer, para su segunda entrega nos compartió la Historia de los Hermanos Menendez y para su tercera temporada se centró en La Historia de Ed Gein.

De estas tres temporadas he visto las últimas dos y deseo dedicaresta publicación en su tercera temporada, la cual se centró, como ya mencioné, en Ed Gein, cuyos asesinatos inspiraron muchas películas y conmocionaron al mundo.

La serie está ambientada entre finales de los 40 y los años 50, se desarrolla principalmente en el pueblo en el cual se crio Ed, este hombre creció en un hogar totalmente disfuncional, su padre, que no aparece mucho en la serie, era un alcohólico violento que agredía tanto física como verbalmente a Edward y a su hermano mayor, para completar este cuadro su madre, Augusta Gein, era una fanática religiosa, esta lo dominó desde su infancia y le enseño que el sexo era malo y una influencia contaminante que debía evitar.

Todo esto llevo a Edward a ser inestable psicológicamente, ya que luchaba contra lo que sentía, contra lo natural, su padre falleció en 1940, luego su hermano en el 1944 y finalmente su madre en 1945, al quedar solo y al no saber relacionarse de manera correcta con otros, es abrumado por la soledad y comienza a aflorar su psicopatía.

Ahora bien la serie, plantea algunas cosas no confirmadas en torno a este asesino, como el que asesinó a su hermano, lo cual no fue confirmado, o su estrecha y enfermiza relación con Adeline, la mujer existió, pero muchas de las cosas que se plantean de su relación con Ed en la serie, no fueron así, lo que nos permite pensar que él como alguien que sufría de esquizofrenia, pudo imaginar algunos de los momentos junto a ella, tal vez es eso lo que en realidad desean plantear en la serie, pero algunas escenas son tan vividas que muchas veces no sabemos que ocurrió realmente y que cosas solo ocurrieron en la mente de Gein.

Lo que si es cierto es que este hombre, del que sus vecinos no llegaron a sospechar, ya que incluso llego a cuidar a los hijos de muchos, fue un asesino y necrófilo, ue al ser descubierto y tras todo lo que se encontró en su granja despertó un profundo interés en los profesionales de la psicología los cuales quedaron asombrados por un caso que combinaba necrofilia, fetichismo y travestismo, recordemos que estos hechos ocurrieron en la década de los 50.

Esta serie es bastante cruda, no apta para niños,la misma nos muestra que era un hombre afectado mentalmente, como la extrema crianza de su madre influyó en él hasta el final, como se convirtió en ladrón de tumbas, asesino y necrófilo, aquí hay que reconocer, por sobre otros aspectos de la serie, el increíble trabajo del actor que dio vida a este personaje Charlie Hunnam, quien cuido todos los detalles, la forma de correr, de caminar, de expresarse, la voz, es impresionante como dio vida a escenas en las que se da placer vestido de mujer o cuando usaba la piel de sus víctimas y bailaba, el aspecto del personaje, sin olvidar la escenografía a su alrededor sobre todo la que tenía que ver de su casa.

Otro aspecto que nos muestra esta serie es la cantidad películas que surgieron tras descubrirse sus crímenes por ejemplo Psicosis, La matanza de Texas, El silencio de los inocentes, entre otras y además como fue su evolución luego de haber ingresado al Instituto de Salud Mental de Mendota en Madison, donde pasó los últimos años de su vida luego de su juicio y donde finalmente falleció en la década de los 80.

En resumen, está una serie que no solo nos muestra los crímenes de un asesino y ladrón de tumbas también como la crianza extrema de los padres puede dañar profundamente a los hijos, el que no atender las señales de alarma a tiempo puede ser un error que puede hacer que una persona termine siendo una amenaza para quienes le rodean, me despido dejando por acá mi review y opinión, yo le doy a esta temporada de Monstruo un 6/10, ya que romantizo toda la situación en torno a este personaje.
