Typhoon Family/ Review
As I have mentioned in previous posts, I have become a consumer of K-dramas. I find them enjoyable, especially because most of them are not that long and you don't have to wait long to find out what will happen to the characters. On this occasion, my choice was
Typhoon Family
I must confess that I was drawn to this South Korean miniseries because it stars Lee Jun-ho, an actor I've liked since I saw him in the K-drama King the Land, so when I saw that he was starring in this one, I decided to watch it.
Basically, this miniseries tells the story of how Kang Tae-poong, after the start of the 1997 Asian crisis and the death of his father, inherits a small company called Typhoon; thus, this young man is forced to save the company while facing many difficulties and without any experience.
At first, I was a little shocked that the series was set in the 90s, but then, as I watched it progress, I liked it, especially when I realized what was behind the choice of the miniseries' title, since it is not the family's surname, but the name of the company. However, being small and with few employees, they came to consider themselves and behave like a family. Watching episode after episode, seeing everything they went through from the beginning of the crisis until it ended, it can be said that they did become a family. They faced adversity and fights, but they managed to forgive, turn the page, and come together.
Now, the plot, as I mentioned, revolves around that company, but for me it was actually a way to remember or show how the Asian crisis affected South Korea and how they struggled to survive it with its pros and cons. At first, I thought that crisis was fictional, added to spice up the plot, but I decided to investigate and found that the financial crisis was real, very real, but what stands out is that South Koreans came together and supported each other to overcome it.
As for the main character, Tae-poong had, let's say, a relaxed life, but after his father's death, he was forced to move forward and learn everything about the company from scratch, guided by someone who never left the company, a young woman named Oh Mi-seon, who was the accountant at Typhoon. This young woman lost her parents at an early age, so she took responsibility for her grandmother and siblings, which is why she has a very different outlook on life than Tae-poong.
The essence of the series is that, between humor and drama, it shows how life can change from one moment to the next, but reminds us that giving up is not an option; we may fall, but getting back up is mandatory.
The Typhoon family also shares the choices made by different company employees when they felt that everything was over and how they gradually return to the company to revive it like the Phoenix, as well as how relationships with our coworkers can quickly change due to different gestures and actions.
The antagonists cannot be missing, and here, in addition to the crisis, it was mainly a rival company, at the center of which were a father and his son, whose relationship is basically marked by the father's demands and the constant comparisons he subjects him to, which drives him to extremes.
The costumes and set design, which paid attention to detail, are not perfect, but they made an effort, and it made me feel like I was living in the nineties again. I loved the presence of the young actress who played Oh Mi-seon (Kim Min-ha), as she is not the typical South Korean beauty that we are usually sold, she is a more real beauty, without the stereotypes that are sold to us today, but the beauty of the character she plays focuses on how simple she is, her love for her family, her values, above all her empathy and how professional she is.
In short, the series tells us from the perspective of a small company, like a country, in this case South Korea, which faced an economic crisis and emerged from it, and also how life can change from one moment to the next, reminding us of what is truly important. I give this miniseries an 8.5/10.
Como ya he comentado en publicaciones anteriores, me he convertido en una consumidora de k-dramas, me parecen agradables, sobre todo porque, en su mayoría, no son tan largos y no hay que esperar mucho para saber qué pasará con los personajes. En esta ocasión, elección fue la de
Familia Typhoon
Debo confesar que me incliné por esta miniserie surcoreana debido a que la protagoniza Lee Jun-ho, un actor que me agrada desde que lo vi en el k-drama King the Land, así que al ver que protagonizaba esta decidí verla.
Básicamente, esta miniserie narra como Kang Tae-poong, tras el comienzo de la crisis asiática de 1997 y la muerte de su padre, hereda una pequeña empresa de nombre Typhoon; así este joven se ve obligado a salvar la empresa enfrentando muchas dificultades y sin tener experiencia.
En un principio, la serie me chocó un poco al estar ambientada en los 90, pero luego, al ver como avanzaba, me gustó, sobre todo al percatarme de lo que había tras la elección del nombre de la miniserie, ya que no es el apellido de la familia, es el nombre de la empresa, pero al ser pequeña y con pocos empleados, ellos llegaron a considerarse y comportarse como una familia y al ver capítulo tras capítulo todo lo que pasaron desde el comienzo de la crisis hasta que acabó, se puede decir que se convirtieron en una familia. Enfrentaron adversidades y peleas, pero lograron perdonar, pasar la página y unirse.
Ahora bien, la trama, como mencioné, versa en torno a esa empresa, pero en realidad para mí fue una manera de recordar o de mostrar como la crisis asiática afectó a Corea del Sur y como lucharon para sobrevivir a ella con sus pros y sus contras. En un principio creí que esa crisis era algo ficticio para darle sazón a la trama, pero decidí investigar y en efecto, esa crisis financiera fue real, muy real, pero entre lo que destaca está que los surcoreanos se unieron y apoyaron para salir de dicha crisis.
En cuanto al personaje principal, Tae-poong tenía, digamos que una vida relajada, pero tras la muerte de su padre, se vio obligado a salir adelante y aprender desde cero lo relativo a la compañía y todo de la mano de quien nunca dejó la empresa, una joven de nombre Oh Mi-seon, quien era la contable en la empresa Typhoon, Esta joven perdió a sus padres a temprana edad, por lo que hizo responsable de su abuela y sus hermanos, por lo que tiene una visión de la vida muy diferente a la de Tae-poong .
La esencia de la serie es que entre humor y drama, comparte como la vida nos puede cambiar de un momento al otro, pero recordándonos que rendirse no es una opción; podemos caer, pero levantarse es obligatorio.
La familia Typhoon también comparte las opciones que tomaron los diferentes empleados de la empresa cuando sintieron que todo se había acabado y como poco a poco vuelven a la empresa para hacerla resurgir como el Ave Fénix, también como las relaciones con nuestros compañeros de trabajo pueden transformarse rápidamente por diferentes gestos y acciones.
No pueden faltar los antagonistas y aquí se trataba, además de la crisis, principalmente de una compañía rival, en cuyo centro estaban un padre y su hijo, cuya relación está básicamente marcada por las demandas del padre y las continuas comparaciones a las que lo somete, lo que le hace llegar a los extremos.
El vestuario y la escenografía, que cuidó detalles, no son perfectos, pero se esforzaron, me hizo sentir que vivía nuevamente en los noventa y del elenco me encantó a presencia de la joven que dio vida a Oh Mi-seon (Kim Min-ha), pues no es la belleza típica surcoreana que suelen vendernos, es una belleza más real, sin los estereotipos que nos venden hoy en día, pero la belleza del personaje que interpreta se centra en lo sencilla que es, su amor por su familia, sus valores, sobre todo la empatía y lo profesional que es.
En resumen, la serie nos narra desde la óptica de una empresa pequeña como un país, en este caso Corea del Sur enfrentó una crisis económica y surgió de ella, también como la vida cambia de un momento a otro y nos recuerda lo que es verdaderamente importante. Yo le doy a esta miniserie un 8.5/10.
