One of the worst things we can do when we start watching a film is to do so with high expectations, because we run the risk of suffering a rather resounding disappointment. However, it is often difficult not to do so, especially when the project involves an actor or director whose previous works have lived up to our expectations.

When they announced that a new film by Luis Estrada (La Ley de Herodes, El Infierno, La Dictadura Perfecta) was coming out, I was very excited and immediately added it to my list of pending films. When the production went through a series of problems for its release and distribution I was a little worried, I thought they would seek to censor it as happened with his previous film, but luckily a few months later it was released in theatres and a little over a month ago it arrived at Netflix. Finally, last weekend I had the chance to see it.

The film tells the story of Pancho Reyes, a young man from humble origins, who goes to study in the country's capital. After a lot of effort (and a bit of luck) he manages to climb up the socio-economic ladder and start a family. When he is about to get the promotion of his life, the one that will take him out of the middle class and catapult him into the upper class, he discovers that he must return to the town of his childhood to claim the inheritance left to him by his late grandfather. What he never imagined is that this journey would completely change the course of his life.

I can't find any other way to start talking about this film other than to say that it was a HUGE disappointment for me. Not only is it the worst Estrada film I've seen, but I think it's the worst I've seen this year. The film is unnecessarily long (over three hours) and there were several points where I felt like the story was going nowhere and just kept going round and round about the same situation. The character introductions were excessively long and tedious, too many irrelevant characters, so much so that at one point I didn't even know who was who.

Most (if not all) of Estrada's productions have a good dose of social criticism, political satire and black comedy, however, "Qué Viva México " falls short in all these aspects. As social criticism, I find the way it portrays Pancho's relatives appalling, as it glorifies the idea that lower class people are lazy, bad and ignorant, while middle and upper class people are the ones who work and that's why they have what they have. While everyone is portrayed as self-serving, it seems to me that the lower class fared a lot worse.

One of the things I was most looking forward to in this film was its political satire, as the previous films had greatly exposed the governments in power when they were released. Sadly, this was my biggest disappointment, it was so obvious how supportive the director is of the current president, that attempts to criticise his tenure were as rare as they were ineffective. Every attempt to make a "joke" at the government's expense was made so superficially that it never became relevant to the story.

Nothing similar to "La Dictadura Perfecta" or "La Ley de Herodes", both of which took it upon themselves to bluntly expose the government in power so directly that there was even an actor who played the president, who, although he didn't have the name of the real president, it was obvious that it was him. In this latest film, the references to the Mexican president are excessively scarce and are limited to trite phrases that we have all read too many times on Twitter, so they no longer cause absolutely no surprise or amusement, which brings me to its next big flaw: the lack of comedy.

During the three hours and eleven minutes the film lasted I didn't laugh once, well, only at the end to make fun of how bad it was. This is supposed to be a comedy and there's really nothing to laugh at, all the supposedly funny moments are so clichéd and overused that they can't possibly make anyone laugh. Really, it was embarrassing to watch, the film was one nonsense after another, what ruined it for me was that I could find absolutely nothing to laugh at, and I tried for the first hour and a half, but then I just wanted the agony to end.

As for the performances there is not much to note, most of the actors could be described as "capable", however, I don't know what kind of direction they were given to make their performances as empty and clichéd as their own characters. At first, I thought the over-the-top performances were because they were part of a character's dream, but no, they maintained that same tone throughout the entire film, which was rather off-putting and dispiriting to me.

I don't know if I can mention anything that I liked, perhaps only the "moral" of the story, which I suppose was that the Mexican is the owner of many riches, but he is so selfish that he doesn't know how to take advantage of them, so he serves them on a silver platter to others. This is my interpretation, because I want to find even one positive thing in the film, I don't want to feel that I completely lost those three plus hours, although you could certainly say that I did, because the "message" is also too trite and is a recurring discourse within this country.

Unlike most of my reviews, there is no "what I liked most" or "what I liked least" section here, simply because I liked practically nothing, so there is no point in trying to do so. Needless to say, I don't recommend it to anyone, not even out of curiosity, if you want to see anything from this director, you'd better watch "La Ley de Herodes" a thousand times before giving this a chance.

Un Viaje Fallido a La Prosperidad | Reseña de "Qué Viva México"

Una de las peores cosas que podemos hacer al momento de comenzar a ver una película es hacerlo con grandes expectativas, porque corremos el riesgo de sufrir una decepción bastante estrepitosa. Sin embargo, muchas veces es difícil no hacerlo, sobre todo cuando el proyecto involucra a un actor o director cuyas obras anteriores han cumplido con nuestras expectativas.

Cuando anunciaron que saldría una nueva película de Luis Estrada (La Ley de Herodes, El Infierno, La Dictadura Perfecta) me emocioné bastante y la agregué inmediatamente en mi lista de películas pendientes. Cuando la producción atravesó una serie de problemas para su estreno y distribución me preocupé un poco, pensé que buscarían censurarla como ocurrió con su película anterior, pero por suerte unos meses después se estrenó en cines y hace un poco más de un mes llegó a Netflix. Finalmente, el fin de semana pasado tuve la oportunidad de verla.

¡Qué viva México!", cuenta la historia de Pancho Reyes, un joven de orígenes humildes, que se va a estudiar a la capital del país. Luego de mucho esfuerzo (y algo de suerte) logra escalar de posición socioeconómica y formar una familia. Cuando está a punto de conseguir el ascenso de su vida, ese que lo sacará de la clase media y lo catapultará a la clase alta, descubre que debe regresar al pueblo de su infancia a reclamar la herencia que le dejó su difunto abuelo. Lo que él no imaginó es que ese viaje cambiaría por completo el rumbo de su vida.

No encuentro otra forma de comenzar a hablar de esta película que no sea decir que fue una GRAN decepción para mí. No solamente es la peor película de Estrada que he visto, sino que creo que es lo peor que he visto este año. El metraje se me hace innecesariamente largo (más de tres horas) y hubo varios puntos en los que sentí que la historia no iba a ningún lugar y solamente daba vueltas y vueltas sobre una misma situación. Las introducciones de los personajes fueron excesivamente largas y tediosas, demasiados personajes irrelevantes, tanto, que llegó un punto en el que no sabía ni quién era quién.

La mayoría de las producciones de Estrada (por no decir todas), cuentan con una buena dosis de crítica social, sátira política y comedia negra, sin embargo, "Qué Viva México" se queda corta en todos esos aspectos. Como crítica social me parece espantosa la forma en la que retrata a los familiares de Pancho, ya que glorifica la idea de que las personas de clase baja son flojos, malos e ignorantes, mientras que los de clase media o alta son los que trabajan y por eso tienen lo que tienen. Si bien a todos los ponen como unos interesados, me parece que a la clase baja le fue muchísimo peor.

Una de las cosas que más esperaba de esta película era su sátira política, ya que las anteriores habían expuesto enormemente a los gobiernos que se encontraban en el poder cuando fueron lanzadas. Lamentablemente, esta fue mi mayor decepción, fue tan evidente lo partidario que es el director del presidente actual, que los intentos de criticar su mandato fueron tan escasos como ineficientes. Cada vez que se intentaba hacer un "chiste" a costa del gobierno eran hechos de forma tan superficial que nunca cobraban relevancia dentro de la historia.

Nada similar a la "Dictadura perfecta" o "La Ley de Herodes", las cuales se encargaron de exponer de forma contundente al gobierno en turno de forma tan directa que incluso hubo un actor que encarnó al presidente, que si bien no tenía el nombre del real de este, era evidente que se trataba de él. En esta última película las referencias al primer mandatario mexicano son excesivamente escasas y se limitan a frases trilladas que todos hemos leído demasiadas veces en Twitter, por lo que ya no causan absolutamente ninguna sorpresa ni gracia, lo que me lleva a su siguiente gran fallo: la falta de comedia.

Durante las tres horas con once minutos que duró la película no me reí una sola vez, bueno, solamente al final para burlarme de lo mala que había sido. Se supone que esto es una comedia y de verdad que no hay nada que de risa, todos los supuestos momentos cómicos están tan estereotipados y trillados que es imposible que hagan reír a alguien. De verdad, fue algo vergonzoso de ver, de por sí la película era un sinsentido tras otro, lo que la terminó de arruinar para mí fue no encontrar absolutamente nada de que reírme y miren que lo intenté, durante la primera hora y media, después solo quería que terminara la agonía.

Sobre las actuaciones no hay mucho que destacar, la mayoría de los actores podrían describirse como "capaces", sin embargo, desconozco qué clase de dirección les dieron para que sus actuaciones fueran tan vacías y clichés como sus propios personajes. Al principio pensé que las actuaciones tan exageradas eran porque formaban parte del sueño de un personaje, pero no, mantuvieron ese mismo tono durante toda la película, lo cual fue algo bastante desagradable y desesperante para mí.

No sé si puedo mencionar algo que me haya gustado, quizás solamente la "moraleja" de la historia, que supongo que fue que el mexicano es dueño de muchas riquezas, pero es tan egoísta que no las sabe aprovechar, así que se las sirve en bandeja de plata a otros. Esto es interpretación mía, porque quiero encontrarle, aunque sea una cosa positiva a la película, no quiero sentir que perdí por completo esas más de tres horas, aunque sin duda podría decirse que así fue, porque el dichoso "mensaje" también está demasiado trillado y es un discurso recurrente dentro de este país.

A diferencia de la mayoría de mis reseñas, aquí no hay sección de lo que más y lo que menos me gustó, sencillamente porque no me gustó prácticamente nada, así que no tiene ningún sentido intentar hacerlo. Sobra decir que no la recomiendo a nadie, ni por curiosidad, si quieren ver algo de este director, mejor vean "La Ley de Herodes" mil veces antes de darle una oportunidad a esto.
