Hello, #HiveCon friends. This week I finally culminated my tour through the films of the great Satoshi Kon, this time it was the turn of Tokyo Godfathers. As has happened to me with all of this director's films, I started watching it blindly, that is, without even reading a synopsis, so I was surprised to discover that it was a Christmas movie, although with a different touch due to the genius of Kon. This movie takes us on a journey through the snowy streets of Tokyo, where the magic of Christmas mixes with a harsh reality, giving us an incredibly touching story full of laughter.

Tokyo Godfathers follows the story of three drifters: Gin, a middle-aged man who lost his wife and daughter; Hana, a transgender woman; and Miyuki, a teenage runaway. Together, they form a peculiar family of homeless people who, in the middle of Christmas Eve, discover an abandoned newborn baby. This unexpected event touches them and triggers a whole odyssey to find the baby's parents and prevent her from spending her life on the street like them.

This film was a total surprise for me, I never imagined finding it within the filmography of this director, it is a kind of tragicomedy, with touches of black humor. At times, it made me laugh out loud, while at others it made me feel a great emptiness in my stomach due to the rawness of what was happening. The journey of the three drifters to find the baby's mother is filled with contrasting moments and myriad unforeseen events that enrich the plot and result in a great experience. We see them being forced to confront their past mistakes and reveal secrets in front of others in order to move forward and achieve their goal.

For the three characters, it was a journey of self-discovery in which they show us how forgiveness and redemption are possible even in the most extreme circumstances, as well as showing us that even people who seemingly have nothing always have something to offer. The film also tackles the traditional definition of family by giving it a new context, for as the trio of drifters' bands together to care for the baby and search for his mother, they discover that family is not always limited to blood, but can be extended through the loving connections we form with others.

One of the highlights of Tokyo Godfathers is its critique of Japanese society, it was something that caught my attention and moved me quite a bit. The film shows the harsh reality of life on the streets and addresses issues such as social indifference and prejudice faced by those who do not fit into the traditional norms of a society as structured as the Japanese one. It is well known that the problem of homelessness in Tokyo is a big one and in this film there are no qualms in addressing it, from invisibilizing them, belittling them, to assaulting them, Satoshi Kon has no qualms in showing the reality of these people.

Having seen this director's other works, I must say that Tokyo Godfathers surprised me tremendously, as it changes the tone of his previous films, in which reality is confused with a fictional world, as in Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress and Paprika. Those films explore the mind and reality in a highly surreal way, whileTokyo Godfathers delves into the daily lives of its characters in a realistic and moving way. Still, they are all spectacular and feature exceptional development, both in plot and characters.

Although different from traditional Christmas movies, its message of hope and redemption makes it a perfect choice. In addition to also having a great animation work, which, as in the previous ones, is exceptional, with very well cared details that capture the essence of the Japanese capital and its inhabitants, the snowy scenarios are especially impressive and beautiful. The soundtrack it perfectly complements the movie, I never imagined hearing Christmas carols in Japanese, it was something interesting and made the experience of watching this movie even more entertaining.

Without a doubt, it is a must-see movie, not only during the Christmas season, but during any season.

Hola, amigos de #HiveCon. Esta semana culminé por fin mi recorrido por las películas del gran Satoshi Kon, en esta oportunidad fue el turno de Tokyo Godfathers. Como me ha pasado con todas las películas de este director, comencé a verla a ciegas, es decir, sin leer siquiera una sinopsis, por lo que me sorprendió descubrir que era una película navideña, aunque con un toque diferente debido a la genialidad de Kon. Esta película nos lleva de viaje por las calles nevadas de Tokio, donde la magia de la Navidad se mezcla con una cruda realidad, regalándonos una historia increíblemente conmovedora y llena de risas.

Tokyo Godfathers sigue la historia de tres vagabundos: Gin, hombre de mediana edad que perdió a su esposa e hija; Hana, una mujer transgénero; y Miyuki, una adolescente fugitiva. Juntos, forman una peculiar familia de personas sin hogar que, en plena víspera de Navidad, descubre a un recién nacido abandonado. Este evento inesperado los conmueve y desencadena toda una odisea para encontrar a los padres de la bebé y evitar que pase su vida en la calle como ellos.

Esta película fue una total sorpresa para mí, nunca me imaginé encontrarla dentro de la filmografía de este director, es una especie de tragicomedia, con toques de humor negro. En momentos me hizo lanzar unas buenas carcajadas, mientras que en otros hizo que sintiera un gran vacío en el estómago debido a la crudeza de lo que estaba sucediendo. El recorrido de los tres vagabundos para encontrar a la madre de la bebé está lleno de momentos contrastantes y de miles de imprevistos que enriquecen la trama y dan como resultado una gran experiencia. Los vemos siendo obligados a confrontar sus errores del pasado y a revelar secretos ante los demás para poder seguir adelante y lograr su cometido.

Para los tres personajes fue un viaje de autodescubrirse en el que nos enseñan cómo el perdón y la redención son posibles incluso en las circunstancias más extremas, además de mostrarnos que hasta las personas que aparentemente no tienen nada, siempre tienen algo que ofrecer. La película también aborda la definición tradicional de familia dándole un nuevo contexto, ya que a medida que el trío de vagabundos se une para cuidar del bebé y buscar a su madre, descubren que la familia no siempre se limita a la sangre, sino que puede extenderse gracias a las conexiones afectivas que formamos con los demás.

Uno de los aspectos más destacados de Tokyo Godfathers es su crítica a la sociedad japonesa, fue algo que llamó mi atención y me conmovió bastante. La película muestra la dura realidad de la vida en las calles y aborda temas como la indiferencia social y el prejuicio que enfrentan aquellos que no encajan en las normas tradicionales de una sociedad tan estructurada como la japonesa. Es muy sabido que el problema de las personas sin techo en Tokio es grande y en esta película no hay miramientos para abordarlo, desde invisibilizarlos, menospreciarlos, hasta agredirlos, Satoshi Kon no tiene ningún reparo en mostrar la realidad de estas personas.

Después de haber visto los otros trabajos de este director, debo decir que Tokyo Godfathers me sorprendió tremendamente, ya que cambia notablemente de tono con respecto a sus películas anteriores, en las cuales la realidad se confunde con un mundo ficticio, como sucede tanto en Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress y Paprika. Esas películas exploran la mente y la realidad de manera sumamente surrealista, mientras queTokyo Godfathers se adentra en la vida cotidiana de sus personajes de una forma realista y conmovedora. Aun así, todas son espectaculares y cuentan con un desarrollo excepcional, tanto de trama como personajes.

Aunque es diferente de las tradicionales películas navideñas, su mensaje de esperanza y redención la convierte en una elección perfecta. Además de también contar con un gran trabajo de animación, el cual, al igual que en las anteriores, es excepcional, con detalles muy bien cuidados que capturan la esencia de la capital japonesa y sus habitantes, los escenarios nevados son especialmente impresionantes y bellos. La banda sonora es complementa perfectamente la película, jamás me imaginé escuchar villancicos en japonés, fue algo interesante y que hizo la experiencia de ver esta película aún más entretenida.

Sin duda, es una película imperdible, no solamente en la temporada navideña, sino durante cualquier época.
