There are characters that possess such a peculiar charm that makes us viewers look forward to their next adventure. For those of us who enjoy detective novels, Hercule Poirot is an old acquaintance whom we enjoy watching in his numerous adventures, which is why when adaptations of Agatha Christie novels were announced with Poirot as the main character, I knew they would be worth it, because the Belgian detective has quite a bit of that peculiar charm I mentioned at the beginning. So far there have been three adaptations and none of them have disappointed me, on the contrary, I found them entertaining and well done.

The last of these adaptations had its release during this 2023, and it is Hunt in Venice. It stars again Kenneth Branagh as detective Poirot, who is accompanied by Michelle Yeoh, Tina Fey, Kelly Reilly and Jamie Dornan. This film adapts the story of the novel The Apples, by the aforementioned British writer.

In this opportunity we see a Poirot retired from his detective activities, enjoying a peaceful tranquility in post-war Venice. When his tranquility is disturbed by an old writer friend, who invites him to be part of a séance in order to see him work to unmask the supposed medium. When a series of murders begin to occur after the first séance on Halloween, Poirot has no choice but to come out of retirement to unmask the culprit and prevent more deaths.

The story takes place in a villa in the city of Venice, which is supposedly haunted, owned by a well-known opera singer, who lost her daughter a few years earlier in a mysterious accident. As usual in this kind of stories, practically all the events of the film take place in that place, except for some memories, which makes us feel trapped in it, as well as the characters. With the addition that Hunting in Venice has a strong supernatural factor, as the village is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of children killed in the war because of negligent doctors, so anyone who practices or has practiced a profession related to health is supposedly in danger.

This belief takes on weight as the first two murder victims are a former nurse and a doctor. However, in the presence of the skeptical Poirot, who thinks that everything must have a logical and real explanation, an investigation begins to take place to discover the truth. Through it we become familiar with all the characters, their motivations, their intentions, and even some hidden secrets, which come to light thanks to the experience of the veteran detective, whom we see challenging the supposedly supernatural events that occur within the villa.

After one of the most terrifying and bizarre nights of their lives, the attendants are reunited by Poirot, who has not only discovered the identity of the murderer of the two victims of that night, but also reveals the terrible truth behind them. This revelation is intimately related to the mystery of the death of Alicia Drake, the daughter of the opera singer, which ends clearing up that case as well.

I must say that I came to this movie with high expectations due to the cast and the story, but also with some doubts that I had been dragging from the previous movie of the Poirot saga, which although it was very entertaining, had many scenes that I found somewhat questionable in terms of dialogue and acting. However, Hunt in Venice made sure to erase them for me quickly. The plot is simple and to some extent predictable, especially if you are familiar with the genre, but the charm of this film lies not in that, but in the path that Poirot and his assistant follow to discover the culprit of the crimes. In that aspect, it delivers an entertaining story, with the usual twist at the end, which is customary in this type of productions. In addition, it creates a sinister and disturbing atmosphere in which the characters not only fear being murdered, but also being haunted by ghostly entities.

This slight twist towards terror, makes us see the detective involved in something apparently unknown that makes him, to some extent, doubt what he has before his eyes, however, his logic makes him prevail and emerge triumphant from that terrible night. Along with him we see very well acted characters, which seemed to me a tremendous improvement compared to Murder on the Nile, in this one even the actors that I did not know from other films, I think they gave performances at the height of a production of this genre. The most relevant for me were, of course, Kenneth Branagh and Tina Fey, who carry a lot of weight in the film as the ones in charge of the investigation. Special mention goes to Michelle Yeoh, who plays a splendid role as the medium in charge of conducting the séance.

Visually, it is a film that invites us to admire the rustic and ancient beauty of the building in which the story takes place, as well as how wonderfully captivating the city of Venice can be. On the other hand, in terms of costumes, I think it could have stood out a little more, I felt that most of the costumes were excessively simple, unlike the previous films of this saga, perhaps because it is set in the postwar period, anyway, I think it is a point that could have been taken better. However, what struck me most in the visual aspect was the direction of Branagh, there are many shots made from angles a little unique, although I found them interesting, I did not find the motive or reason to be made in that way.

Something that surprised me when reading comments from social network users about this movie, was to see how they compare it with the Knives Out saga, claiming that Poirot is a kind of cartoonish version of the character Benoit Blanc and that the movie is a "cheap" version of the one starring Daniel Craig. I guess these are people who are unaware of the origin of both characters and stories, and while both sagas are similar, each has its own charm and I think they shouldn't be compared, especially when the last Knives Out movie was a bit of a disappointment. If we fall into the error of comparing it to its prequel, and certainly to Branagh's Hercule Poirot ones, including Hunt in Venice, it definitely comes off very poorly.

So folks, if you like a good mystery, police investigation and detective movie, you definitely shouldn't miss this adaptation. Maybe it has some weak points, but I'm sure it will keep you guessing if what's going on in the house is some ruse by the killer or if it's actually caused by vengeful ghosts.

Existen personajes que poseen un encanto tan peculiar que hace que los espectadores esperemos con ansias una siguiente aventura suya. Para los que disfrutamos de las novelas policíacas, Hercule Poirot es un viejo conocido al cual disfrutamos ver en sus numerosas aventuras, es por ello que cuando se anunciaron adaptaciones de las novelas de Agatha Christie con Poirot como protagonista, sabía que valdrían la pena, porque el detective belga tiene bastante de ese encanto peculiar que mencioné al principio. Hasta ahora van tres adaptaciones y ninguna me ha decepcionado, al contrario, me han parecido entretenidas y bien realizadas.

La última de estas adaptaciones tuvo su lanzamiento durante este 2023 y se trata de Cacería en Venecia. Está protagonizada nuevamente por Kenneth Branagh en el papel del detective Poirot, el cual acompañado por Michelle Yeoh, Tina Fey, Kelly Reilly y Jamie Dornan. Esta película adapta la historia de la novela Las Manzanas, de la ya mencionada escritora británica.

En esta oportunidad vemos a un Poirot retirado de sus actividades detectivescas, disfrutando de una apacible tranquilidad en la Venecia posguerra. Cuando ve su tranquilidad perturbada por una vieja amiga escritora, quien lo invita a ser parte de una sesión espiritista con la finalidad de verlo trabajar para desenmascarar a la supuesta médium. Cuando una serie de asesinatos comienzan a suceder luego de la primera sesión el día de Halloween, a Poirot no le queda otra opción más que salir de su retiro para desenmascarar al culpable y prevenir más muertes.

La historia trascurre en una villa en la ciudad de Venecia, la cual supuestamente está encantada, propiedad de una conocida cantante de ópera, la cual perdió a su hija unos años antes en un misterioso accidente. Como es costumbre en este tipo de historias, prácticamente todos los acontecimientos de la película ocurren en ese lugar, salvo algunos recuerdos, lo que hace que nos sintamos atrapados en ella, al igual que los personajes. Con el agregado de que Cacería en Venecia cuenta con un fuerte factor sobrenatural, ya que la villa se cree que está siendo acechada por los fantasmas de niños muertos en la guerra por culpa de doctores negligentes, por lo que cualquiera que ejerza o haya ejercido una profesión relacionada con la salud se encuentra en supuesto peligro.

Esta creencia toma peso al ser las dos primeras víctimas de asesinato, una ex-enfermera y un médico. Sin embargo, al contar con la presencia del escéptico Poirot, quien piensa que todo debe tener una explicación lógica y real, una investigación comienza a llevarse a cabo para descubrir la verdad. A través de ella nos familiarizamos con todos los personajes, con sus motivaciones, sus intenciones e incluso alguno que otro secreto que tienen escondido, los cuales salen a la luz gracias a la experiencia del veterano detective, a quien vemos desafiar los eventos supuestamente sobrenaturales que ocurren dentro de la villa.

Después de una de las noches más terroríficas y extrañas de sus vidas, los asistentes son reunidos por Poirot quien no solamente ha descubierto la identidad del asesino de las dos víctimas de esa noche, sino que también revela la terrible verdad que hay detrás de estos. Dicha revelación se relaciona íntimamente con el misterio de la muerte de Alicia Drake, la hija de la cantante de ópera, lo cual termina esclareciendo también ese caso.

Debo decir que Llegué a esta película con las expectativas altas debido al reparto y a la historia, pero también con algunas dudas que venía arrastrando de la película anterior de la saga de Poirot, la cual aunque fue muy entretenida, tuvo muchas escenas que me parecieron algo cuestionables en cuando a diálogos y actuaciones. Sin embargo, Cacería en Venecia se aseguró de borrármelas rápidamente. La trama es sencilla y hasta cierto punto predecible, sobre todo si están familiarizados con el género, pero el encanto de esta película no radica en eso, sino en el camino que siguen Poirot y su ayudante para descubrir al culpable de los crímenes. En ese aspecto cumple al entregarnos una historia entretenida, con el giro final de rigor, que se acostumbra en este tipo de producciones. Además, se encarga de crear una atmósfera siniestra y perturbadora en la cual los personajes no solo temen ser asesinados, sino también el ser perseguidos por entes fantasmales.

Este ligero giro hacia el terror, hace que veamos al detective envuelto en algo aparentemente desconocido que lo hace, hasta cierto punto, dudar de lo que tiene ante sus ojos, sin embargo, su lógica lo hace prevalecer y salir triunfante de aquella terrible noche. Junto a él vemos personajes muy bien trabajados actoralmente, lo cual me pareció una mejora tremenda en comparación con Asesinato en el Nilo, en esta incluso los actores que no conocía de otras películas, me parece que dieron interpretaciones a la altura de una producción de este género. Los más relevantes para mí fueron, desde luego, Kenneth Branagh y Tina Fey, quienes llevan mucho peso en la película al ser los encargados de la investigación. Mención especial lleva Michelle Yeoh, quien hace un papel espléndido como la médium encargada de llevar a cabo la sesión espiritista.

Visualmente, es una película que nos invita a admirar la belleza rústica y antigua de la construcción en la que transcurre la historia, al igual que de lo maravillosamente cautivadora que puede ser la ciudad de Venecia. Por otra parte, en cuestiones de vestuario, pienso que pudo resaltar un poco más, sentí que la mayoría de los vestuarios fueron excesivamente sencillos, a diferencia de las películas anteriores de esta saga, quizás se deba a que está ambientada en la postguerra, de igual forma, creo que es un punto que pudo llevarse mejor. Sin embargo, lo que más me impactó en el aspecto visual fue la dirección de Branagh, hay muchas tomas hechas desde ángulos un poco singulares, que a pesar de que me parecieron interesantes, no les encontré el motivo o la razón para ser hechas de dicha forma.

Algo que me sorprendió al leer comentarios de usuarios de redes sociales sobre esta película, fue ver como la comparan con la saga Knives Out, afirmando que Poirot es una especie de versión caricaturesca del personaje Benoit Blanc y que la película es una versión "barata" de la protagonizada por Daniel Craig. Supongo que son personas que desconocen el origen de ambos personajes e historias, y si bien ambas sagas son parecidas, cada una tiene su encanto y pienso que no deben ser comparadas, sobre todo cuando la última película de Knives Out fue un poco decepcionante. Si caemos en el error de compararla con su precuela, y desde luego con las de Hercule Poirot de Branagh, incluyendo Cacería en Venecia, definitivamente sale muy mal parada.

Así que amigos, si les gusta una buena película de misterio, investigación policiaca y detectives, definitivamente no deben perderse esta adaptación. Quizás tiene algunos puntos flojos, pero estoy segura de que los mantendrá adivinando si lo que está pasando en la casa es alguna artimaña del asesino o si en realidad es causado por fantasmas vengativos.
