There are stories that, once you've finished watching them, you'd think that's the end of the story, but nowadays, there's always the possibility of a franchise being born, whether it's a sequel, prequel, alternate history or whatever else the production comes up with. Years ago, when I saw Veronica, it would never have occurred to me that they would look to exploit the story of one of its most intriguing characters, the nun known to the school children as Sister Death.

However, six years after the release of Veronica, the director *Paco Plaza, gives us this interesting film that serves as a kind of "prequel" to that story, although to tell the truth it is more of an alternate history, since the only thing that unites them is the final scene of this one. In fact, it wasn't until that moment that I realised that the two were connected, and although it doesn't change the plot value of either film, it does lend a little more mysticism to the figure of Sister Narcissa.

The story tells of the arrival of Narcisa, a young novice, at a former convent that after the civil war was recovered and now functions as a school for local girls of limited means. Known as "The holy girl" because of the visions she had as a child, Sister Narcisa, soon after arriving at the convent, began to experience paranormal events and visions that something sinister happened years ago, when the war was in full swing.

We begin the film with an old recording of a village blessing, and practically worshipping, a little girl, who 10 years later would become the protagonist of this story: Narcisa. I would like to say that the plot is novel, however, it is not, it exploits the mysticism and sinister aura of religious institutions, as has been done in countless productions. Narcisa is a novice, with doubts, who arrives at her new "convent", where she begins to be harassed by a spirit that terrorises the girls who live there. Little by little and thanks to her visions, Narcisa begins to discover the secrets hidden in those walls.

Despite having an apparently easy theme to exploit to generate scares, the director does not take that path, on the contrary, he decides to deliver a film in which terror is represented by the sinister and tense atmosphere that is lived in the school (or ex-convent). This terror is fed by the mystery of not knowing, until practically the end, the reality of what happened and the identity of the culprits. It may not be as frightening a film as it could have been, however, it has details that kept me on my toes and to a certain extent, tense.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Sister Death is its visuals, which are simple but beautiful. It has an excessive use of white and light, which contrasts perfectly with the turbulent story being told, and unlike many films, where the monsters are hidden in the dark, here they are seen in broad daylight. Possibly, it was a symbolism exploited by the production to represent that even in places of great religiosity, faith and, to a certain extent, "virtue", sinister things can also lurk.

As appealing as it may seem, this film has one big problem: for a horror film, it has virtually no profoundly frightening moments or moments that made me want to look away from the screen. While the atmosphere in the ex-convent/school is sinister, it is a fact that the film falls short in the main motive of films of this genre: to cause terror in its viewers. You could even accuse it of being slow at some points, as it is a story that unfolds in a very leisurely fashion. Perhaps other audiences looking for a more "straightforward" horror might even find it boring.

This point is especially noticeable when compared to Veronica, in which we have a more obvious and not so subtle horror in this one. I can't say that one is better than the other, as I enjoyed them both almost equally. What is true is that in other aspects Sister Death seemed superior to me, especially in details of direction and photography, perhaps a little more supernatural manifestations and a little less "dream" scenes would have helped to make it even more interesting, especially at the beginning, where it feels especially slow.

The final sequences make up for some subtlety of the rest of the film, as the situation becomes untenable for those present in the convent and the conflict explodes. During which a truth is revealed that serves both as an exposé of the horrors experienced during the wars and as a critique of reprehensible acts and decisions made in the name of religion, following archaic, cruel, unjust and even criminal beliefs. Despite being able to predict to some extent what had happened, the ending still shocked me and even made me feel a degree of empathy with the spirit that haunted the ex-convent and its inhabitants.

Many may have been disappointed by Sister Death, perhaps expecting something scarier from the director of REC and Veronica, however, I found it to be a film almost on par with its "predecessor", with fewer scares, but with other superior aspects. I ended up enjoying it enough to inspire me to watch Veronica again. So, if you like these kinds of stories, which are more mystery and suspense, rather than jump out of your chair, you'll definitely find something good in the story of sister Narcissa and sister Socorro.

Entre Sombras y Misterios | Reseña de "Hermana Muerte"

Hay historias que al terminar de verlas, cualquiera pensaría que hasta ahí llegó todo, sin embargo, en la actualidad siempre existe la posibilidad de ver nacer una franquicia, bien sea con una secuela, precuela, historia alterna o lo que sea que se le ocurra a la producción. Hace años, cuando vi Verónica, jamás se me hubiera ocurrido que buscarían la manera de explotar la historia de uno de los personajes más intrigantes de esta, la monja conocida por los niños del colegio como la Hermana Muerte.

Sin embargo, seis años después del estreno de Verónica, el director *Paco Plaza, nos regala esta interesante película que sirve como una especie de “precuela” de aquella historia, aunque a decir verdad es más una historia alterna, ya que lo único que las une es la escena final de esta. De hecho, es hasta ese momento que me di cuenta de que ambas estaban conectadas y aunque no cambia el valor de la trama de ninguna de las dos películas, sí le concede un poco más de misticismo a la figura de la Hermana Narcisa.

La historia cuenta la llegada de Narcisa, una joven novicia, a un exconvento que luego de la guerra civil fue recuperando y ahora funciona como escuela para niñas de bajos recursos de la localidad. Conocida como "La niña santa" por las visiones que tuvo de pequeña, la hermana Narcisa, al poco tiempo de llegar al exconvento, comienzo a experimentar sucesos paranormales y visiones de que algo siniestro pasó años atrás, cuando la guerra se encontraba en pleno apogeo.

Comenzamos la película con una antigua grabación de un pueblo bendiciendo, y prácticamente adorando, a una pequeña niña, la cual 10 años después se convertiría en la protagonista de esta historia: Narcisa. Me gustaría decir que la trama es novedosa, sin embargo, no es así, en ella se explota el misticismo y el aura siniestra de las instituciones religiosas, tal como se ha hecho en innumerables producciones. Narcisa es una novicia, con dudas, que al llegar al su nuevo “convento”, donde comienza a ser acosada por un espíritu que aterroriza a las niñas que viven ahí. Poco a poco y gracias a sus visiones, Narcisa comienza a descubrir los secretos que ocultan aquellas paredes.

Aun teniendo un tema aparentemente fácil de explotar para generar sustos, el director no toma ese camino, por el contrario, decide entregar una película en la que el terror es representado por la atmósfera siniestra y tensa que se vive en la escuela (o exconvento). Dicho terror es alimentado con el misterio de no saber, hasta prácticamente el final, la realidad de lo que sucedió y la identidad de los culpables. Quizás no es una película tan aterradora como pudo haberlo sido, sin embargo, tiene detalles que me mantuvieron atenta a lo que sucedía y hasta cierto punto, tensa.

Quizás el mayor logro de Hermana Muerte es su aspecto visual, el cual es sencillo pero hermoso. Cuenta con un uso excesivo del blanco y de la luz, que contrasta a la perfección con la turbulenta historia que están narrando, y a diferencia de muchas películas, donde los monstruos se esconden en la oscuridad, aquí se dejan ver a plena luz del día. Posiblemente, haya sido un simbolismo explotado por la producción para representar que, incluso en lugares de gran religiosidad, fe y, hasta cierto punto, “virtud”, también pueden esconderse cosas siniestras.

A pesar de lo atractiva se puede parecer, esta película tiene un gran problema: para ser una película de terror, prácticamente no tiene momentos profundamente aterradores o que me hayan hecho querer alejar la mirada de la pantalla. Si bien la atmósfera en el exconvento/escuela es siniestra, es un hecho que la película se queda corta en el motivo principal de las películas de este género: causar terror en sus espectadores. Incluso podría llegar a acusarla de ser lenta en algunos puntos, ya que es una historia que se desarrolla de manera muy pausada. Tal vez a otra audiencia que busque un terror más "directo", pueda llegarle incluso a parecer aburrida.

Este punto es especialmente notorio si se la compara con Verónica, en la cual tenemos un terror más obvio y no tan sutil en este. No puedo decir que una es mejor que otra, ya que las dos las disfruté casi por igual. Lo que sí es cierto es que en otros aspectos Hermana Muerte me pareció superior, sobre todo en detalles de dirección y fotografía, quizás un poco más de manifestaciones sobrenaturales y un poco menos de escenas de "sueños" hubieran ayudado a hacerla aún más interesante, sobre todo al principio, donde se siente especialmente lenta.

Las secuencias finales compensan un poco esa sutileza reinante en el resto de la película, la situación se vuelve insostenible para los presentes en el convento y explota el conflicto. Durante el cual se nos revela una verdad que sirve tanto de exposición a los horrores vividos durante las guerras, como de crítica a los actos reprobables y a las decisiones tomadas en nombre de la religión, siguiendo creencias arcaicas, crueles, injustas e incluso criminales. A pesar de poder predecir hasta cierto punto lo que había sucedido, el final de igual manera me impactó e incluso me hizo sentir cierto grado de empatía con el espíritu que atormentaba el exconvento y a sus habitantes.

Es probable que a muchos les haya decepcionado Hermana Muerte, quizás esperaban algo más aterrador del director de REC y Verónica, sin embargo, a mí me pareció una película casi a la altura de su “predecesora”, con menos sustos, pero con otros aspectos superiores. Terminé disfrutándola lo suficiente como para que me inspirara a ver de nuevo Verónica. Así que, si les gustan este tipo de historias, que son más de misterio y suspenso, que de saltar de la silla, sin duda encontrarán algo bueno en la historia de la hermana Narcisa y la hermana Socorro.
