I didn't want to end the #spookymonth without doing a review of an anime of the horror genre, I had thought of doing one of those I had already seen previously or perhaps make a countdown with my favorites, however, none of this convinced me so I decided to look for something new, I was asking for recommendations and some hivers friends suggested me a series called "Higurashi: When They Cry" (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni), of which, luckily, its first season was available on Netflix.
No quise finalizar el #spookymonth sin hacer una reseña de un anime del género de terror, había pensado en hacer una de los que ya había visto con anterioridad o quizás realizar un conteo con mis favoritos, sin embargo, nada de esto me convenció así que decidí buscar algo nuevo, estuve pidiendo recomendaciones y unas amigas hivers me sugirieron una serie llamada “Cuando las cigarras lloran” (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni), de la cual, por suerte, su primera temporada estaba disponible en Netflix.
A strange curse plagues the village of Hinamizawa causing people to disappear and die horribly every year during the most important festival of the village, the "Watanagashi" or "The flow of cotton", is it the fault of a supernatural being or the monsters are found within the villagers themselves?.
When young Keiichi moves to this village, he will be caught up in this strange curse and will have to fight to survive and to discover what is behind it.

Higurashi: When They Cry is an anime of the horror genre, with touches of gore, suspense and supernatural situations that definitely make it not suitable for all audiences. This first season was released in 2006 and contains a total of 26 episodes, which are all available on Netflix Latin America. The story as such is divided into two "arcs" the first known as the "questions" which consists of 15 chapters and the second is the "answers" consisting of 11 episodes.
In technical matters it has an animation that reminded me of the famous "slice of life", it is not something I dislike, but I think I would have preferred a little more "adult" atmosphere, although I can understand the appeal of seeing lolis slaughtering and being slaughtered. Overall it doesn't have animation that stands out for its details, not even in the "gore" scenes which was somewhat disappointing and which I hope in later seasons will improve considerably.
What I did love was the musicalization of the series, they manage to create a murky and unpleasant atmosphere only through the singing of the cicadas, I thought it was so well done that sometimes I did not know if the sound was coming from the TV or if it was something that was actually happening.

Esta primera temporada fue lanzada en 2006 y contiene un total de 26 episodios, los cuales se encuentran todos disponibles en Netflix Latinoamérica. La historia como tal está dividida en dos “arcos” el primero conocido como el de las “preguntas” que consta de 15 capítulos y el segundo es el de las “respuestas” conformado por 11 episodios.
En cuestiones técnicas tiene una animación que me recordó a los famosos “slice of life” o “recuentos de la vida”, no es algo que me desagrade, pero creo que hubiera preferido una ambientación un poco más “adulta”, aunque puedo entender el atractivo de ver a lolis masacrando y ser masacradas. En general no tiene una animación que destaque por sus detalles, ni siquiera en las escenas “gore” lo cual fue algo decepcionante y que espero que en temporadas posteriores mejore considerablemente.
Lo que sí me encantó fue la musicalización de la serie, logran crear un ambiente turbio y desagradable únicamente a través del cantar de las cigarras, me pareció tan bien hecho que a veces no sabía si el sonido veía de la TV o era algo que estaba sucediendo en realidad.
I must admit that I started watching this anime with very high expectations, I was looking for some good gore, because I hadn't seen an anime of that style for a long time and I wanted a lot of blood for this #spookymonth, I remember when it was recommended to me they told me "you need a good stomach". I don't know if it's because I already have a lot of experience with gore or what, but the truth is that I didn't find the scenes to be anything special, honestly I expected much more.
The first few episodes seemed a bit boring and the blood took too much to appear for my taste, although it does have a pretty murky atmosphere, it wasn't enough to make me really disgusted or want to look the other way. In fact, I think they could have developed a better horror/suspense story if they sacrificed a bit of the, already insufficient, gore they tried to include, instead they should have focused more on the sinister situations which, although there were several, could have been better developed if they had skipped the "gore" attempt.
As I went deeper into the season I found some quite redeemable details that made it not a total waste of time, there were chapters that generated me a great indignation for what was happening, but for my taste it lacked brutality, I think the animation is too "pretty" to generate some kind of reaction of disgust, I do not know if they were afraid to cross that line, but it seemed a waste not to do so because they stayed in the middle, it is neither so terrifying nor so gore, it is a middle ground that left me a little unsatisfied.
About the characters there is not too much to highlight, everything happens around six students who rotate the place of protagonists as the series progresses, besides them we get to know very little of the other inhabitants/visitors of Hinamizawa, this may sound like something negative for some, but I think they manage to exploit the six main ones enough to perfectly understand the history of each of them.
But not everything was bad, something that I really liked was how the story was handled, as I mentioned at the beginning there are two arcs in this season and each one represents a different side of the coin. First we have a horrible situation that "apparently" does not make much sense, in which we are presented with many unknowns that remain in the air until the arrival of the second arc, in which they give an explanation to all the chaos that develops in the first chapters.
I found this format quite interesting and even though some answers were somewhat predictable or expected, they also took care to fill all the events with enough detail for the story to take shape and have a "proper" closure. There was another detail that I loved about the handling of the story, but to talk about that I must warn that spoilers are coming.
Debo admitir que comencé a ver este anime con expectativas muy altas, yo estaba buscando algo de buen gore, porque hacía mucho que no veía un anime de ese estilo y quería mucha sangre para este #spookymonth, recuerdo que cuando me lo recomendaron me dijeron “necesitas un buen estómago”. Yo no sé si es que ya tengo mucha experiencia con el gore o qué, pero la verdad a las escenas no les encontré nada del otro mundo, honestamente me esperaba mucho más.
Los primeros episodios me parecieron un poco aburridos y la sangre se hizo esperar demasiado para mi gusto, si bien sí tiene un ambiente bastante turbio, no fue lo suficiente como para generarme verdadero asco o ganas de mirar para otro lado. De hecho, creo que podían haber desarrollado una mejor historia de terror/suspenso si sacrificaban un poco del, ya insuficiente, gore que intentaron incluir, en su lugar debieron enfocarse más en las situaciones siniestras que, aunque fueron varias, pudieron desarrollarse mejor de haberse obviado el intento de “gore”.
Cuando fui adentrándome más en la temporada encontré detalles bastante rescatables que hicieron que no fuera una total pérdida de tiempo, hubo capítulos que me generaron una gran indignación por lo que estaba pasando, pero para mi gusto le faltó brutalidad, creo que la animación es muy “bonita” como para generar algún tipo de reacción de asco, no sé si les dio miedo cruzar esa línea, pero me pareció un desperdicio no hacerlo porque se quedaron en medio, no es ni tan terrorífica ni tan gore, es un punto medio que me dejó un poco insatisfecha.
Sobre los personajes no hay demasiado que resaltar, todo ocurre alrededor de seis estudiantes que se rotan el lugar de protagonistas a medida que avanza la serie, además de ellos llegamos a conocer muy poco a los demás habitantes/visitantes de Hinamizawa, esto podrá sonar como algo negativo para algunos, pero creo que logran explotar a los seis principales lo suficiente como para comprender perfectamente la historia de cada uno de ellos.
Pero no todo fue malo, algo que me gustó mucho y que me sacó un poco de onda, fue como se manejó la historia, como les mencioné al principio existen dos arcos en esta temporada y cada uno representa un lado diferente de la moneda. Primero tenemos una situación horrible que “aparentemente” no tiene mucho sentido, en la cual nos plantean muchas incógnitas que se quedan en el aire hasta la llegada del segundo arco, en el que le dan una explicación a todo el caos que se desarrolla en los primeros capítulos.
Este formato me pareció bastante interesante y a pesar de que algunas respuestas eran algo predecibles o esperables, también se encargaron de llenar todos los acontecimientos de los pormenores suficientes como para que la historia tomara forma y tuviera un cierre “adecuado”. Hubo otro detalle que me encantó del manejo de la historia, pero para hablar de eso debo advertir que se vienen spoilers.
I loved the fact that several stories run in parallel, I think that was what I enjoyed most about the series, at first it took me by surprise, but after starting the second story I got the hang of it and couldn't wait to see what new misfortunes were going to happen to the main characters and the town in general. There were some that I didn't like very much, like the first one, which I feel was the weakest, it was a huge disappointment that they started with that one, I only continued watching the series because of the recommendation I was given.
My favorite story without a doubt was "The Flow of Cotton", I think it was the most complete and the one that had the most interesting elements, such as the presence of the twins Mion and Shion, besides the most graphic deaths of the season. Those scenes in which Shion/Mion tortures their victims have been the best of the series so far, both the part of the questions and the answers were excellent, I could have seen a whole series based on this story of how good I thought it was.
Something I would have liked them to do is to make some sense of why there were several stories in parallel, there were some hints that the different realities were connected, so I hope that in the next season they develop it, because during this one I expected all the time that some character was living all the events as a kind of "groundhog day", but seeing that it was not so I was quite disappointed, I really hope they do it later.
Amé el hecho de que transcurran varias historias en paralelo, creo que fue lo que más disfruté de la serie, al principio me tomó por sorpresa, pero después de comenzar la segunda historia le agarré la onda y no podía esperar a ver qué nuevas desgracias iban a pasarles a los protagonistas y al pueblo en general. Hubo algunas que no me gustaron mucho que digamos, como la primera, que siento que fue la más floja, fue una tremenda decepción que comenzaran por esa, solamente continué viendo la serie por la recomendación que me dieron.
Mi historia favorita sin duda fue la de “El fluir del algodón”, creo que fue la más completa y la que tuvo más elementos interesantes, como la presencia de las gemelas Mion y Shion, además de las muertes más gráficas de la temporada. Esas escenas en las que Shion/Mion tortura a sus víctimas han sido lo mejor de la serie hasta ahora, tanto la parte de las preguntas, como la de las respuestas me parecieron excelentes, hubiera podido ver toda una serie basada en esta historia de lo buena que me pareció.
Algo que me hubiera gustado que hicieran es darle un poco de sentido a por qué existían varias historias en paralelo, hubo algunos indicios de que las diferentes realidades estaban conectadas, así que espero que en la siguiente temporada lo desarrollen, porque durante esta yo esperé todo el tiempo que algún personaje estuviera viviendo todos los acontecimientos como una especie de “día de la marmota”, pero al ver que no fue así me decepcionó bastante, de verdad espero que sí lo hagan más adelante.
What I liked most
Definitely, for me the strongest point of Higurashi: When They Cry is the way the story is structured, you are practically forced to watch the whole thing to make sense of it and try to solve the mystery surrounding the village of Hinamisawa.
This I thought was pretty cool, I think I have a weakness when stories are treated in a non-linear way, it's a resource that I really enjoy and that makes any production earn a few extra points with me.

Definitivamente, para mí el punto fuerte de Cuando las cigarras lloran es la forma en la que está estructurada la historia, prácticamente te obligan a verla completa para encontrarle sentido e intentar resolver el misterio que envuelve al pueblo de Hinamisawa.
Esto me pareció bastante genial, yo creo que tengo una debilidad cuando se tratan las historias de forma no lineal, es un recurso que disfruto mucho y que hace que cualquier producción gane unos cuantos puntos extras conmigo.
What I liked the least
- For my taste it lacked gore, there were very good segments that left me satisfied in that aspect, although the truth is they were really few, as I told you at the beginning, I don't know if it's that I already have too much experience with the genre, but I felt it so weak that I thought it had been a victim of censorship and I looked for a more explicit version that of course does not exist.
- The first chapters of the series are a bit bland, although it's a matter of waiting for the rhythm to improve a bit, I think the beginning could have been more exciting.

- Para mi gusto le faltó gore, hubo segmentos muy buenos que me dejaron satisfecha en ese aspecto, aunque la verdad es fueron realmente pocos, como les dije al principio, no sé si es que ya tengo demasiada experiencia con el género, pero la sentí tan floja que pensé que había sido víctima de la censura y busqué una versión más explícita que por supuesto no existe.
- Los primeros capítulos de la serie son un poco sosos, si bien es cuestión de esperar para que el ritmo mejore un poco, creo que el principio pudo ser más emocionante.
In general, it is a good anime if you are looking for mystery and a story a little different from what you are used to. If, on the other hand, you want something very gory and with a lot of viscera, this is not the anime for you, you'd better watch something else.
Despite that, I will look for the second season and the ovas that have been released to give a little more sense to the story, which is what I can really rescue from Higurashi: When They Cry, although I certainly do not lose hope of finding more disturbing things.
En general, es un buen anime si buscan misterio y una historia poco diferente a lo acostumbrado. Si, por el contrario, quieren algo muy sangriento y con muchas vísceras este no es anime para ustedes, mejor vean otra cosa. A pesar de eso, buscaré la segunda temporada y las ovas que han sacado para darle un poco más de sentido a la historia, que es lo que en realidad puedo rescatar de Cuando las cigarras lloran, aunque desde luego tampoco pierdo la esperanza de encontrarme con cosas más perturbadoras.

Yo descubrí esta serie después de haber quedado impresionado por el suspenso de la serie llamada Another. Había leído muy buenas cosas de esta serie, pero debo admitir que la actitud súper infantil de los personjes al comienzo de la historia me canso un poco. De todas formas, la seguí viendo y por suerte la cosa se pone mucho más interesante a medida que avanzan los episodios.
La historia en si me gusto mucho, pero la infantilidad exagerada en muchos personajes al comienzo es algo que creo que se podría mejorar. En Another por ejemplo esa infantilidad exagerada nunca estuvo presente y todo estuvo espectacular.
Te recomiendo un anime llamado Serial Experiments Lain en caso de que no lo hayas visto, creo que te puede gustar :D
Definitivamente esa fue una de las cosas más flojas de la serie, me costó mucho agarrarle la onda porque sentía que estaba viendo algo demasiado "bonito". Another por otra parte es una joya, ya la he visto dos veces y efectivamente no tiene nada de infantil, a pesar de que también son estudiantes de instituto.
Lain la vi hace muuuchos años ya, seria bueno recordarla pero ahora mismo quiero ver cosas nuevas, la que estoy tentada a ver es una que se llama Monster, pero todavía no me decido, ¿Tu la has visto?.

No he visto la que me comentas de Monster pero la voy a buscar para ver que tal es. Las producciones animadas que tengo pendientes de ver ahorita son:
• Pantheon: esta no es un anime sino una producción occidental, y la temática me parece súper interesante.
• Classroom of the elite: este si es un anime.
• Shadows House: otro anime interesante.
• La temporada 2 de Steins Gate, que no sé si es una precuela o una historia alternativa. Creo que se llama Steins Gate 0.
Has visto los animes llamados Shiki, Ergo Proxy, Paranoia Agent, Death Parade, Parasyte, y ID:Invaded?
Esos son los mejores animes no infantiles que recuerdo en este momento, te recomendaría ver esos si no los conoces 👍
He visto algunos, de hecho Parasyte es de mis favoritos, cada cierto tiempo lo vuelvo a ver, en total lo debo haber visto como unas cuatro veces, al igual que Erased que también es excelente.
Definitivamente, mi estómago como que no soportaría eso. Y el otaku de la casa ya dijo: mejor no veamos cosas de terror... Así que me quedo con tu resumen y en espera de mejorar mi estómago para verlo en algún momento futuro

I think an anime that did exceptionally well with their gore was Attack On Titan's first season.
The Titans really looked horrific then and the way they killed was so abnormal and terrifying, but the action prolly overshadowed the gore.
It's pretty hard to find a purely horror anime😂😂😂
It's not that hard, I really liked one called Corpse party, very good. There is also one called Pet shop of horrors that although it is old, it is great, an many more, I think the thing is to look for them and not let go only by the popular ones like Shingeki, which although it had its bloody details, for me it is not gore at all 😅
