Dreams are one of the greatest motivations a person can have, no matter if they are big or small, they definitely move the world. What would humanity be without dreamers? However, human beings do not only live by and for their dreams, there is also something always present in us: fear, the other side of the coin. What would happen if our deepest fears gave rise to monsters with unimaginable evil? Well, that's the reality of the world of Chainsaw Man.

This anime tells the story of Denji, a bankrupt young man who works for the Yakuza in order to pay off the debt his father inherited from him. Basically, Denji will do anything for money, so day in and day out he puts his life on the line hunting demons for his mafia bosses. Luckily, he has the help of Pochita, a sort of "pet " who is actually the Chainsaw Demon, who has been with him since he was a child and over the years has become his faithful companion.

Everything is difficult for Denji, since he was a child he has lived alone with Pochita and has never enjoyed something as simple as a good meal or a decent bed. As he became a teenager, the Yakuza began to abuse him more and more, his need and his dream of getting rid of his father's debts. Until there comes a point where they betray him and hand him over to the Zombie Demon, who hates him for working as a demon hunter. This is how Denji, on the verge of death, ends up fusing his heart with Pochita, becoming a powerful human-demon.

After becoming a hybrid, Denji is recruited by the demon-hunting team of the Public Security, with whom he will begin to work in order to achieve his dreams and the promise he made to Pochita to live a normal life. This being the true beginning of the story and Denji's journey as the demon hunter known as Chainsaw Man.

I remember the first time I saw footage of this anime it seemed crazy and the concept does sound a little strange, but once you get caught up in the unique plot, you're one hundred percent sure to have a lot of fun. Billed as a dark fantasy with a touch of black humour and gore, Chainsaw Man was one of the most talked about and anticipated series of last year, becoming a hit in the West, but not in its home country.

With only 12 episodes, one would think that the story would be somewhat fast-paced, and it was for the first few episodes, however, about halfway through the season there are several occasions where it gets a bit slow, and I even got the feeling that nothing was happening, that the story wasn't moving forward. Part of this "stagnation " could be due to the much-needed character introductions, although it is also true that they could have been handled better, so as not to make us feel that bump in the rhythm. Luckily, in the last four chapters everything goes downhill for the characters, which makes the story a lot more interesting and moving.

One thing I quite enjoyed about this series was its touch of dark humour. It made it much more tolerable to have the pace slow down from time to time. While there are characters that are very serious and bring a bit of reality to the story, there are others like Power and Denji himself, who serve to relieve the tension of a story where there are deaths and demons everywhere. I think without that "comic relief ", the series wouldn't have had the same impact for me. Needless to say, when things have to take a slightly darker turn, they do so without any trouble or contemplation whatsoever, after all we're talking about demonic beings and humans, so anything that can go horribly wrong, will.

One of the great attractions of Chainsaw Man is its animation, being produced by the studio MAPPA (Vinland Saga, Shingeki no Kyojin, Jujutsu Kaisen...), it was to be expected that visually it would have a quality well above average. From the insane fight sequences to the quieter, more nostalgic scenes, the animation is a big highlight. As a monster lover myself I loved seeing such striking designs, the demons, the possessed and the hybrids are all beautifully done, perhaps a little more grotesque detail would have made them perfect for me, but I understand that it must be highly commercial and not everyone likes that kind of aesthetic.

I sincerely hope that MAPPA will decide to continue and a second season will be announced soon. Although there is already talk that the series is in jeopardy due to the studio's busy schedule and the fact that it was not very well received in Japan. Even so, this first season is totally recommendable because of how entertaining it can be and if the scenario of its cancellation comes true, we will always have the manga to know the outcome of the story.

What I liked most

The balance between black (and somewhat racy) comedy and dark fantasy. Despite everything that's going on in the world being horribly evil, demons murdering mercilessly and humans betraying each other, the story manages to integrate situations that completely break away from the seriousness of the setting, giving us a few laughs before refocusing on the misfortunes.

What I liked least

The length of the season and the pacing. I felt that 12 episodes was really short for a first season, at first there was talk of 24, but in the end it was only half that. I feel that to create the basis of the story and introduce characters, that amount of episodes was insufficient, maybe that's what made the bump in pacing so noticeable. It's not the same to have four weak episodes when you have a season of 24, as it is to have them when there are only 12 episodes.

Matando por un par de buenas razones

002.png

Me interesa 👀

¡Adoro a Chainsaw Man!💖💖✨

12 episodes? And you say it could have been "fast-paced?" Wow. Amines usually have way more for a season? What's the run time for each episode?

avatar

Many anime have 24 episodes per season, that's what they wanted to do with this one, but in the end they cut it in half 😅. The length of each episode should be about 24 minutes.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting ✌️🤗

avatar

24 episodes isn't too much then if they are about 24 minutes each.

avatar

Nope, now imagine having only 12 of 24 minutes each 😅

avatar

That's like serving me half a dish of food. 😄 Now I understand.

avatar

Exactly, I hope that the next season will be a bit longer.

Saludos 🤗✌️
