When the announcement of the new season of Black Mirror came out, many of us were pleasantly surprised. It had been four years since the last one, and I honestly thought that the project had been abandoned due to the mixed reception of the fifth season. Luckily the production was encouraged to bring us five new episodes of this wonderful series and although it had its low points, it also had some that reminded me why it is still one of my favourite series.

For those of you who don't know Black Mirror I can only tell you to run and watch it, it is one of the best productions in the Netflix catalogue and if you are a series lover, you definitely have to. This series is an anthology in which each episode has its own story, characters and performances, where they show us the great capacity of human beings to pervert any technological advance they have at hand, until they end up turning it into a nightmare for their victims.

With five episodes, this sixth season has given fans of the series a lot to talk about, as it has been accused of having lost the technological focus that has always characterised it in a couple of episodes. This is something I completely agree with, and I think that if we had only been left with three episodes, as in previous seasons, perhaps the criticisms would be different. I'm not saying that those two episodes are bad, they just don't seem to be part of the Black Mirror universe.

Being an anthology series, I thought it only fair to give a little space to each episode and order them from the one I liked the least, to the one that was my favourite, or rather, the one I enjoyed the most. I must warn that there are some spoilers, although I don't reveal anything transcendental, there are opinions about the endings of each episode.

5.- Mazey Day

Bo is a young paparazzi who, disgusted by the lifestyle of her colleagues, decides to quit the business. However, when she is presented with the opportunity to win a large sum of money for a photograph, she doesn't miss the chance to get down to work, not knowing that what she will find will change her life forever.

It comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen the season that I consider this to be the worst episode of the season (and indeed of the series). For me the story started off quite well, the whole thing about exposing some paparazzi as dastardly beings capable of doing anything for a photo, I thought it was excellent. The problem is that it has one of the worst denouements of the whole series, terrible, I honestly thought I was watching an episode of Supernatural (which I love, but we all know it's not good television).

Maybe if they had stuck with the paparazzi thing and given it an ending focused on that, many people's perception of this episode would be different, but what they did just didn't make a lot of sense to me.

4.- Demon 79

A young Indian shoe saleswoman is discriminated against by her boss, who sends her to take her lunch break in the basement of the shop. It is there that Nida awakens an evil entity, which forces her to carry out three murders in order to prevent the end of the world.

The first thing I'll say about this episode is that I liked it, as an episode of another series it would have been extraordinary, in fact, the idea for a fantasy miniseries like The Sandman is great. But for Black Mirror, not so much. I can't complain too much about it because it had a development that I liked a lot, however, all the time I was expecting it to be a kind of simulation like in the White Bear episode or a kind of game, something that would bring me closer to the traditional Black Mirror.

Sadly, none of that came and although I found the ending satisfying, I felt completely disconnected from the universe of the series. I know that the creator's intention is to incorporate new elements and that's why the episode was presented as a "Red Mirror" movie, but I still think that as a special episode or standalone project it would have been much better.

3.- Beyond The Sea

A space mission forces two astronauts to remain in orbit for a long time. To compensate for this situation of isolation, their consciousness is transmitted to two replicas (humanoid robots), which have the same physical appearance and allow them to live a pseudo-normal life on earth. However, the risk of using such advanced technology soon catches up with them and they must learn to deal with the tragedy that lies ahead.

At this point we begin the strongest episodes of the season, those that feel completely Black Mirror. The atmosphere of tension throughout much of the episode is fantastic, and the ending is just great. The only thing I can criticise is that the dénouement, despite being very good, is completely and utterly predictable. From a certain point in the episode I could already imagine how it was going to end, and it wasn't at all difficult to guess.

That's perhaps the only thing that makes me give it a third place, because in everything else I think it's excellent, especially the performances. While Josh Hartnett and Kate Mara do an incredible job, for me the one who definitely takes the episode is Aaron Paul, he gives us an extraordinary performance embodying the most complicated and nuanced character of the whole episode.

2.- Loch Henry

A couple of young film students head off to the Scottish countryside to make a documentary, but on the way they decide to pay a visit to the mother of one of them. When they arrive, they realise that the place has practically become a ghost town. After a horrible crime years ago, all the tourism they used to receive has completely disappeared. With a great story to discover, the two young people decide to stay and base their documentary on the tragedy that happened in the village, without knowing that they will be stirring up a past as dangerous as it is painful.

This I think was the chapter that had the biggest impact on me, I imagined that there was something shady behind the crime, but nothing really prepared me to discover the truth. While several characters make somewhat questionable decisions, that doesn't detract from the final revelation. Perhaps what kept me from putting this episode first was the fact that it doesn't feel completely Black Mirror, yes it's a great story with an interesting twist, however, the technology isn't the central focus of the mystery.

It's not until the end, where we see the corporate Streamberry (Netflix's mockery, hahahaha) winning a BAFTA award, that I could understand that the point of this episode is to make a critique of how production companies and streaming platforms exploit so-called "True Crime" stories. These cases are treated unceremoniously, no matter how difficult it may be for the innocent family and friends who survived the tragedy that they have decided to exploit, only in order to maintain or gain a few subscribers.

1.- Joan Is Awful

Joan is a senior executive living a stressful but quiet life, until she realises that the streaming platform Streamberry has released a series with all the details of her life, even the most embarrassing, controversial and intimate. This situation pushes her to the limit, both in her personal and work life, so she decides to take a series of radical actions to ensure that her life regains the peace of mind it has lost.

The perfect start to the season, this episode is so much fun, it may not have been the best of the series, but for me it's definitely the one I enjoyed the most of the whole season. It left me with that restlessness that previous episodes of this series left me with, that desire to never touch my phone again and go live in a cave before something bad happens. I felt it with a kind of Nosedive, in which the protagonist's life starts to fall apart because of actions that are not completely under her control.

The climax was a pretty funny (and gross) scene that reminded me of the first episode of the series The National Anthem, as they both reached a point I never thought a series could reach. Best of all, in the case of Joan Is Awful, this moment, in addition to being controversial, was totally hilarious. And of course, the presence of Salma Hayek gave it an extra touch of madness and extravagance that suited the plot perfectly.

Overall I don't think it was a bad season, in fact, it's still one of the best productions on Netflix, despite the questionable decisions they've made lately. I love that in two episodes they decided to make a harsh criticism of streaming services, even using Netflix's image. I thought it was a pretty cool move, although I don't know how much the Netflix guys liked being exposed in that way, especially in the Loch Henry episode.

Yes, it has low points, but even those don't detract from how great the high points were. It's definitely a season I recommend, if you're a purist just don't watch the last two episodes of the season, otherwise, watch the whole thing because even if they don't present a "technological" approach, every episode has an interesting point worth watching. And if by any chance you haven't seen the other seasons of the series, don't hesitate to give it a chance, it's excellent.

Cuando salió el aviso de la nueva temporada de Black Mirror muchos quedamos gratamente sorprendidos. Habían pasado cuatro años desde la última y sinceramente yo pensé que ya habían abandonado el proyecto debido a la recepción dispar que tuvo la quinta temporada. Por suerte la producción se animó a traernos cinco nuevos episodios de esta maravillosa serie y a pesar de que haber tenido sus puntos bajos, también tuvo unos que a mí me recordaron el porqué sigue siendo una de mis series favoritas.

Para los que no conocen Black Mirror solo puedo decirles que corran a verla, es una de las mejores producciones dentro del catálogo de Netflix y si son amantes de las series, definitivamente tienen que hacerlo. Esta serie es una antología en la que cada episodio cuenta con su propia historia, personajes y actuaciones, donde nos demuestran la gran capacidad que tiene el ser humano de pervertir cualquier avance tecnológico que tengan a mano, hasta terminar convirtiéndolo en una pesadilla para sus víctimas.

Con cinco episodios, esta sexta temporada ha dado mucho de qué hablar entre los fanáticos de la serie, ya que se la acusa de, en un par de capítulos, haber perdido ese enfoque tecnológico que siempre la había caracterizado. Esto es algo en lo que estoy completamente de acuerdo y pienso que si solamente nos hubieran dejado tres episodios, como en temporadas anteriores, quizás las críticas serían diferentes. Con esto no estoy diciendo que esos dos episodios son malos, simplemente no parecen formar parte del universo de Black Mirror.

Al ser una serie antológica, me ha parecido justo darle un pequeño espacio a cada episodio y ordenarlos desde el que menos me ha gustado, hasta el que ha sido mi favorito, o mejor dicho, el que he disfrutado más. Debo advertir que hay ligeros spoilers, si bien no revelo nada trascendental, sí hay opiniones sobre los finales de cada episodio.

5.- Mazey Day

Bo, es una joven paparazzi, quien asqueada por el estilo de vida de sus colegas decide dejar el negocio. Sin embargo, cuando se le presenta la oportunidad de ganar una gran suma de dinero por una fotografía, no pierde oportunidad de ponerse manos a la obra, sin saber que lo que encontrará cambiará su vida para siempre.

Para nadie que haya visto la temporada es una sorpresa que considere este como el peor capítulo de la temporada (y de paso de la serie). Para mí la historia comenzó bastante bien, todo el rollo de exponer a algunos paparazzi como seres ruines capaces de hacerlo todo por una foto, me pareció excelente. El problema es que tiene uno de los peores desenlaces de toda la serie, terrible, honestamente pensé que estaba viendo un episodio de Supernatural (que me encanta, pero todos sabemos que no es buena televisión).

Quizás si hubieran seguido con el asunto de los paparazzi y le hubieran dado un final enfocado a eso, la percepción de muchos sobre este episodio sería diferente, pero lo que hicieron sencillamente no tuvo mucho sentido para mí.

4.- Demon 79

Una joven vendedora de zapatos, de origen Indio, es víctima de discriminación por parte de su jefe, el cual la envía a tomar su hora de almuerzo en el sótano de la tienda. Es allí donde Nida despierta a una entidad maligna, la cual la obliga realizar tres asesinatos, con la finalidad de evitar el fin del mundo.

Lo primero que voy a decir de este episodio es que me gustó, como un capítulo de otra serie hubiera sido extraordinario, es más, la idea para una miniserie de fantasía tipo The Sandman es buenísima. Pero, ¿para Black Mirror?, no tanto. No me puedo quejar demasiado de ella porque tuvo un desarrollo que me gustó mucho, sin embargo, todo el tiempo estuve esperando que fuera una especie de simulación como en el capítulo White Bear o una especie de juego, algo que me acercara más al Black Mirror tradicional.

Lamentablemente, nada de eso llegó y aunque el final me pareció satisfactorio, me sentí completamente desconectada del universo de la serie. Sé que la intención del creador es incorporar nuevos elementos y que por eso el capítulo se presentó como una película de "Red Mirror", pero aun así creo que como capítulo especial o proyecto independiente hubiera quedado mucho mejor.

3.- Beyond The Sea

Una misión espacial obliga a dos astronautas a permanecer en órbita por largo tiempo. Para compensar esta situación de aislamiento, sus conciencias son transmitidas a dos réplicas (robots humanoides), las cuales poseen su misma apariencia física y les permiten vivir una vida pseudo-normal en la tierra. Sin embargo, el riesgo utilizar tecnología tan avanzada pronto los alcanza y deben aprender a lidiar con la tragedia que se les presenta.

En este punto comenzamos con los episodios fuertes de la temporada, esos que se sienten completamente Black Mirror. La atmósfera de tensión que existe durante buena parte del episodio es fantástica y el final es simplemente genial. Lo único que le puedo reprochar es que el desenlace, a pesar de ser muy bueno, es completa y totalmente predecible. Desde cierto punto del capítulo ya me imaginaba cómo iba a terminar y es que no era para nada difícil de adivinar.

Eso es, quizás, lo único que me hace darle un tercer lugar, ya que en todo lo demás me parece excelente, sobre todo las actuaciones. Si bien Josh Hartnett y Kate Mara hacen un trabajo increíble, para mí el que sin duda se lleva el capítulo es Aaron Paul, el señor nos regala una actuación extraordinaria encarnando al personaje más complicado y con más matices de todo el episodio.

2.- Loch Henry

Una pareja jóvenes estudiantes de cine se enfila a la campiña escocesa a realizar un documental, pero en el camino deciden hacerle una visita a la madre de uno de ellos. Al llegar, se dan cuenta de que aquel sitio se ha convertido prácticamente en un pueblo fantasma y es que tras un horrible crimen ocurrido años atrás, todo el turismo que recibían desapareció por completo. Con una gran historia que descubrir, los dos jóvenes deciden quedarse y basar su documental en la tragedia que sucedió en el pueblo, sin saber que van a remover un pasado tan peligroso como doloroso.

Este creo que fue el capítulo que más me impactó de todos, yo me imaginaba que detrás del crimen había algo turbio, pero de verdad nada me preparó para descubrir la verdad. Si bien varios personajes hacen decisiones algo cuestionables, eso no le resta impacto a la revelación final. Quizás lo que me hizo no colocar este episodio en primer lugar fue el hecho de que no se siente completamente Black Mirror, sí es una gran historia con un giro interesante, sin embargo, la tecnología no es el foco central del misterio.

No es hasta el final, en el que vemos al corporativo Streamberry (la burla de Netflix, jajajaja) ganando un premio BAFTA, que pude entender que el fin de este episodio es hacer una crítica a cómo explotan las productoras y plataformas de streaming las historias llamadas "True Crime". Estos casos son tratados sin contemplación alguna, sin importar lo difícil que pueda ser para los familiares y amigos inocentes que sobrevivieron a la tragedia que hayan decidido explotar, solamente con el fin de mantener o ganar unos cuantos suscriptores.

Lo sentí con una especie de Nosedive, en el que la vida de la protagonista comienza a desmoronarse por acciones que no están completamente bajo su control.

El punto cumbre fue una escena bastante divertida (y asquerosa) que me recordó al primer episodio de la serie The National Anthem, ya que ambos llegaron a un punto en el que jamás pensé que una serie podía llegar. Lo mejor de todo es que en el caso de Joan Is Awful, este momento, además de controversial, fue totalmente hilarante. Y desde luego, la presencia de Salma Hayek le dio un toque extra de locura y extravagancia que le sentó excelente a la trama.

En líneas generales no creo que haya sido una mala temporada, de hecho, sigue siendo una de las mejores producciones que hay en Netflix, a pesar de las decisiones tan cuestionables que han hecho últimamente. Me encanta que en dos episodios hayan decidido hacer una dura crítica a los servicios de streaming, incluso utilizando la imagen de Netflix. Me pareció una movida bastante genial, aunque no sé qué tanto les haya gustado a los de Netflix ser expuestos de esa manera, sobre todo en el capítulo Loch Henry.

Sí, tiene puntos bajos, pero incluso estos no llegan a demeritar lo geniales que fueron los altos. Sin duda es una temporada que recomiendo, si son muy puristas simplemente no vean los dos últimos episodios de la temporada, en caso contrario, véanla toda porque aunque no presenten un enfoque “tecnológico”, todos los capítulos tienen un punto interesante que vale la pena ver. Y si por alguna casualidad no han visto las demás temporadas de la serie, no duden en darle una oportunidad, es excelente
