This is, broadly speaking, the central theme of Yellowjackets, a series that, with only two seasons and 19 episodes, has managed to have a great impact and receive excellent reviews.

The plot takes us back to 1996, where a team of high school football players from New Jersey head to a tournament in Seattle. However, their journey takes an unexpected turn when the plane they are on crashes somewhere remote in the Canadian mountains. The overall tone of the series is dark and tense, keeping me completely glued to the screen throughout each episode. From the very first episode, the desperate decisions the young women must make to survive made a huge impact on me. The scenes are intense, often bloody and sometimes even brutal. The series is not afraid to show the rawest aspects of survival in a hostile environment. But Yellowjacket is not just about blood and survival. Amidst all the tension, there are moments of deep character development and, surprisingly, some pretty twisted humour. Complex relationships and hidden secrets throughout make the series satisfyingly intriguing.

Characters

The characters are, without a doubt, the heart of Yellowjackets, their evolution throughout the plot is striking and gives the story the motive it needs to move forward. Firstly, we have Shauna, a girl/housekeeper, who normally goes unnoticed, but in reality hides deep secrets, she offers an intriguing perspective on the masks we wear to hide our true identity. We also have Misty, who starts out as an outcast and ends up becoming a leader of sorts due to her knowledge and ability to take advantage of any situation.

Natalie, the rebellious and impulsive, but with a sensitive heart, she reminded me of the complexity of that time and the constant struggle to fit in. And finally, Taissa, always the perfectionist, unafraid to do what it takes to get what she wants, she shows us how appearances can be deceiving and that it can seem like we have everything under control, but the reality is very different. Of course there are more characters, however, none are as relevant as the four of them over the two seasons.

While they might seem like appealing characters, the reality is that they are more villains than heroines, both their adult versions, as well as the young ones, make a countless number of truly horrible decisions that are capable of shaking anyone. To what extent did they do it to survive and not just get carried away by the wildness of the place they found themselves in?

The performances of the cast are exceptional, both from the young actresses and the adults. The seamless transition between the characters in the two timelines is impressive and lends a touch of authenticity - yes, we know what Christina Ricci looks like as a young woman, but we can't deny that Sammi Hanratty does a great job of playing the young Misty. The performances and the narrative made it really easy for me to connect with the characters at both points in their lives and empathise with them.

To watch Yellowjackets is to ride a rollercoaster of emotions and bizarre revelations, one after the other. I was surprised, thrilled and kept intrigued with every twist and turn of the story, there wasn't a moment when I didn't think these women were insane. However, the series not only tackles themes of extreme survival and trauma, but also explores the complexity of friendship, identity and that inner struggle we all face at some point in our lives.

I definitely don't understand why this series isn't talked about more, as entertaining as it is. I loved it and I'm looking forward to the next season. So if you're looking for a series with a lot of shocking moments and interesting characters, Yellowjackets is definitely a wise choice. Whether you're looking for intense drama, timelines, horror, or just well-rounded and well-developed characters, this series has something for everyone.
