This past weekend, I had the opportunity to see a movie that came out earlier this year that I had been putting off for a long time. It is "Knock at the Cabin " (Knock at the Door). It is a horror film of the “home invasions” subgenre, although it could also be considered a Thriller. It is directed by M. Night Shyamalan and stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Kristen Cui, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rupert Grint and Abby Quinn. Honestly, the reason I had put it off so long was because this director has a somewhat spotty track record; however, I was quite pleasantly surprised.

Based on the novel by Paul Tremblay, the story follows a family looking to spend a quiet vacation in a cabin in the middle of the woods, but their longed-for rest turns into a nightmare when four strangers break into their little retreat. These strangers try to convince them that the world and humanity are on the brink of destruction and that only their family can save it, the problem is that to save humanity, they demand an unimaginable sacrifice.

The first to encounter these intruders is Wen, a little girl of almost 8 years old, who is approached by Leonard (Dave Bautista) while she is catching grasshoppers outside the cabin. Despite the stranger's very menacing appearance, his treatment of the girl is strangely gentle and becomes even stranger when he warns her that he and his other friends have a very difficult job to do with her family. This first approach serves to establish the foundation on which the film rests: angst, tension, fear, bewilderment, and disbelief.

What follows are the typical scenes of a "home invasion" movie. Little Wen runs to warn her parents about the danger, but they doubt her word until they hear the first knock on their door, which sets in motion a failed strategy to keep the intruders out of the cabin. But to the surprise of both the family and us viewers, the strangers adopt a cordial attitude, even introduce themselves and tell them that they have been chosen to save the world, but that they must make a difficult choice in order to avert the apocalypse.

This movie is a roller coaster of emotions and disconcerting moments in which we don't know whether to side with the invaders or the family. On one side, we have four crazy people who say they had visions about the end of the world and how that family had the possibility to stop it by making a tragic sacrifice. On the other side, there is the family, made up of Eric, Andrew and little Wen, a homoparental family with a remarkable love among its members, but who live in constant fear of being discriminated against and of suffering again some life-threatening attack of violence.

Honestly, who would believe the intruders, of course no one. That is why they use extraordinary measures to try to convince the family members to make the sacrifice in the name of humanity, which worsens the atmosphere of tension and fear that envelops the cabin. But as the hours pass, the intruders' efforts begin to take their toll on the family, causing a major moral and emotional dilemma for Andrew and Eric: Are the strangers insane or is the end of humanity really at hand? As they grapple with the most difficult decision of their lives, we, the viewers, try to look for clues and details that give us a clue as to what is really going on.

That bewilderment of not knowing what the reality is, is precisely one of the strengths of the first half of "Knock at the Cabin", since being a Shyamalan film we know that any possibility is valid, that kept me in expectation for a good part of the film. However, as the story progresses, the picture becomes drastically clearer, leaving almost no surprises or twists for the end, even changing the denouement captured by the author in his book, giving us one much more bland and without the impact of the original.

Despite the disappointment of the ending, it is an enjoyable movie, which surprised me completely. My expectations, as I mentioned at the beginning, were low, not only the director has an irregular filmography, but also Dave Bautista was in the cast, of which I had no reference that would indicate that he could offer a work that I would like, on the contrary. However, after seeing it my opinion about him changed significantly, I don't think he is the best actor in the film industry, but I don't think he is as bad as I thought before.

The rest of the cast does a pretty good job in conveying the anguish and fears of their characters, both the family and the intruders collaborate to build a really entertaining tension. Likewise, Shyamalan's work as a director is outstanding, there are many close-ups that help convey everyone's unease and suffering. Unfortunately, what started out as a good attempt at adaptation ended up being something without much significance and completely wasted the original ending.

Despite the disappointment I had at the end, I can say that I enjoyed it, it's not a great movie, but for having arrived with really low expectations I must say that I was surprised for the better. So if you like movies with good tension, that keep you speculating and feature a twist-free ending, "Knock at the Cabin" is definitely for you.

Night Shyamalan y protagonizada por Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Kristen Cui, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Rupert Grint y Abby Quinn. Honestamente, la razón por la cual la había postergado tanto era porque este director tiene una trayectoria algo irregular; sin embargo, me llevé una sorpresa bastante agradable.

Del otro lado, está la familia, conformada por Eric, Andrew y la pequeña Wen, una familia homoparental con un notable amor entre sus miembros, pero que vive con el miedo constante a ser discriminados y a volver a sufrir algún ataque de violencia que ponga en riesgo sus vidas.

Honestamente, ¿quién le creería a los intrusos?, por supuesto que nadie. Es por ello que utilizan medidas extraordinarias para tratar de convencer a los miembros de la familia de realizar el sacrificio en nombre de la humanidad, lo cual empeora la atmósfera de tensión y miedo que envuelve a la cabaña. Pero con el pasar de las horas los esfuerzos de los intrusos comienzan a hacer mella en la familia, lo cual ocasiona un gran dilema moral y emocional para Andrew y Eric, ¿Los extraños están locos o de verdad se acerca el fin de la humanidad?. Mientras ellos lidian con la decisión más difícil de sus vidas, nosotros, los espectadores, intentamos buscar pistas y detalles que nos den un indicio de lo que en realidad está pasando.

Ese desconcierto de no saber cuál es la realidad, es justamente uno de los puntos fuertes de la primera mitad de "Knock at the Cabin", ya que al ser una película de Shyamalan sabemos que cualquier posibilidad es válida, eso me mantuvo a la expectativa durante buena parte de la película. Sin embargo, a medida que avanza la historia, el panorama se va esclareciendo drásticamente, dejando casi ninguna sorpresa o giro para el final, llegando incluso a cambiar el desenlace plasmado por el autor en su libro, dándonos uno mucho más soso y sin el impacto del original.

A pesar de la decepción del final, es una película disfrutable, lo cual me sorprendió por completo. Mis expectativas, como les comenté al inicio, eran bajas, no solo el director tiene una filmografía irregular, sino que dentro del reparto estaba Dave Bautista, del cual no tenía ninguna referencia que me señalara que pudiera ofrecer un trabajo que me gustara, al contrario. Sin embargo, después de verla mi opinión sobre él cambió significativamente, no pienso que sea el mejor actor de la industria del cine, pero, tampoco creo que sea tan malo como creía antes.

El resto del reparto hace un trabajo bastante bueno al trasmitir la angustia y los miedos de sus personajes, tanto la familia como los intrusos colaboran para construir una tensión realmente entretenida. De igual manera, el trabajo de Shyamalan como director es destacable, hay muchos primeros planos que ayudan a transmitir la inquietud y el sufrimiento de todos. Lamentablemente, lo que comenzó como un buen intento de adaptación terminó siendo algo sin mayor trascendencia y que desaprovechó por completo el final original.

A pesar de la decepción que tuve al final, puedo decir que la disfruté, no es una gran película, pero para haber llegado con expectativas realmente bajas debo decir que me sorprendió para bien. Así que si les gustan películas con buena tensión, que los mantengan especulando y que cuenten con un final sin giros, "Knock at the Cabin", definitivamente es para ustedes.
