From the first glimpse I had of "Love and Death", I knew it was going to have me on the edge of my seat watching episode after episode until the very end, and that's exactly what happened. This HBO crime drama has only seven episodes, which are loaded with emotion, mystery and uncertainty.

"Love and Death" tells the story of Candy Montgomery, a Texas housewife who gets bored with the monotony around her and decides to have an affair with one of the members of the congregation of the church she attends. The problem? They are both married. Without realizing it, their affair begins to affect their marriages, and they decide to put an end to it, however, the damage was already done and both will have to face the consequences of their actions.

Despite how it may sound, this story is far from being a moralistic melodrama about the consequences of doing "bad" things. The plot presents us with a somewhat deeper issue involving the mental health of several characters, as well as the importance of communication in all types of interpersonal relationships.

One of the best things about the series is the credibility with which the subject is treated, Candy was a woman who apparently had it all, a quiet life taking care of her house, her husband and her children. She went to church and was even part of the choir. But, something was missing, maybe excitement or just something different from her routine. This situation is as old as time, I would even go so far as to say that many of us, both single and married, have felt trapped in the monotony of a routine that seems to have no end.

The way Candy decided to deal with that feeling of being fed up was to get involved with Allan Gore, they were both involved in dysfunctional marriages that had them unsatisfied, so it wasn't hard to keep their affair going for almost a year until they "both agreed" that it was time to give their respective marriages a chance. Which worked, until it stopped, and their past actions caught up with them and everything got completely out of control.

What followed was a tragedy caused by the fragile mental health of two women who were long pushed to the limit. Perhaps if this were happening today and not in the 1970s, both women could have had the psychological and psychiatric support they needed, however, at that time it was not yet as normalized to go to therapy as it is fortunately beginning to be today.

It could be said that the story has two acts, in the first we have the infidelity and in the second the consequences of this. The changes in both narratives are notorious, as well as in the characters, who, although they are still the same, there is a profound change in them, especially in Candy, who not only ends up completely exposed, but must also face her inner ghosts to avoid losing everything.

While the plot is striking and interesting, it would be impossible to sustain without the excellent work done by Elizabeth Olsen in the role of Candy Montgomery. The veracity and intensity she brings to the character is highly admirable, at the beginning she radiates adventure, risk. Until her deeds catch up with her, and she begins to become a shadow of her former self. Many times I felt identified with the way everything was coming down on her, but she continued to function normally, only in her eyes you could notice everything that was going on inside her.

The rest of the characters also live a notorious evolution, especially Candy's husband and lover, however, she is the star around which all the others orbit, I don't know how true this is, but that's how it happens in this adaptation, and it seemed exaggerated to me. She is the one who with a simple phrase sets in motion situations that not only marked her life, but that of an entire community.

Unfortunately, not everything is wonderful in "Love and Death", visually I was quite disappointed, to take place in the late 70s, early 80s, I feel they could have done a better job of costumes, makeup and hairstyle. There were several things out of place, especially the aesthetics of Candy herself, she just seemed out of the current era, I don't know if that was intentional, but I feel it was completely out of sync with the era. Luckily, this flaw was compensated with a great soundtrack, led by a spectacular opening theme by Nina Simone.

For better or worse, this series is hopelessly compared to "Candy", a Hulu production that, despite starting filming after "Love and Death" premiered a year before it and is about the exact same thing. Honestly, I haven't seen the Hulu version of this story, but I must say that reading the reviews of both I am tremendously curious, and I think I will watch it too, just to be able to fairly judge both products, of course, also because many praise the other adaptation.

Despite having its weak points, I consider it an interesting story, with a stellar performance by Olsen, that alone makes it worth watching. So if you like dramas based on true stories, "Love and Death" is definitely for you.

Desde el primer acercamiento que tuve con "Love and Death", supe que me iba a tener al filo de mi asiento viendo un capítulo tras otro hasta el final, y eso fue exactamente lo que sucedió. Este drama criminal de HBO cuenta con tan solo siete episodios, los cuales están cargados de emoción, misterio e incertidumbre.

"Love and Death" cuenta la historia de Candy Montgomery, un ama de casa texana que se aburre de la monotonía que la rodea y decide tener un amorío con uno de los miembros de la congregación de la iglesia a la cual asiste. ¿El problema? Ambos están casados. Sin darse cuenta, su aventura comienza a afectar sus matrimonios y deciden ponerle fin, sin embargo, el daño ya estaba hecho y ambos deberán afrontar las consecuencias de sus acciones.

A pesar de como pueda sonar, esta historia está lejos de ser un melodrama moralista sobre las consecuencias de hacer cosas "malas". La forma en la que Candy decidió lidiar con ese sentimiento de hartazgo fue involucrándose con Allan Gore, ambos estaban metidos en matrimonios disfuncionales que los tenían insatisfechos, así que no fue difícil mantener su amorío durante casi un año hasta que "ambos convinieron" que era momento de darle una oportunidad a sus respectivos matrimonios. Lo cual funcionó, hasta que dejó de hacerlo y sus acciones del pasado los alcanzaron y todo se salió completamente de control.

Lo que siguió fue una tragedia ocasionada por la frágil salud mental de dos mujeres que durante mucho tiempo fueron puestas al límite. Quizás si esto sucediera en la actualidad y no en los años 70, ambas mujeres podrían haber tenido el acompañamiento psicológico y psiquiátrico que necesitaban, sin embargo, en esa época aún no estaba tan normalizado acudir a terapia como por suerte lo está comenzando a estar hoy en día.

Se podría decir que la historia tiene dos actos, en el primero tenemos la infidelidad y en el segundo las consecuencias de esta. Los cambios en ambas narrativas son notorios, al igual que en los personajes, quienes a pesar de que siguen siendo los mismos, existe un cambio profundo en ellos, sobre todo en Candy, la cual no solamente termina completamente expuesta, sino que también debe enfrentarse con sus fantasmas internos para evitar perderlo todo.

Si bien la trama es llamativa e interesante, sería imposible de sostener sin el excelente trabajo que realiza Elizabeth Olsen en el papel de Candy Montgomery. La veracidad e intensidad que le brinda al personaje es sumamente admirable, al principio irradia aventura, riesgo. Hasta que sus hechos la alcanzan y comienza a convertirse en una sombra de lo que llegó a ser. Muchas veces me sentí identificada con la forma en la que todo se le venía encima, pero ella seguía funcionando de forma normal, solamente en sus ojos se podía notar todo lo que estaba pasando en su interior.

El resto de los personajes también vive una evolución notoria, sobre todo el esposo y el amante de Candy, sin embargo, ella es la estrella alrededor de la cual todos los demás orbitan, no sé qué tan verídico sea esto, pero a así sucede en esta adaptación y me pareció exagerado. Ella es la que con una sencilla frase pone en movimiento situaciones que no solamente marcaron su vida, sino la de toda una comunidad.

Lamentablemente, no todo es maravilloso en "Love and Death", visualmente llegó a decepcionarme bastante, para desarrollarse a finales de los 70, principios de los 80, siento que pudieron haber hecho un mejor trabajo de vestuario, maquillaje y peinado. Hubo varias cosas fuera de lugar, sobre todo la estética de la propia Candy, simplemente parecía salida de la época actual, no sé si aquello fue intencional, pero siento que descuadraba por completo con la época. Por suerte este fallo lo compensaron con una banda sonora genial, encabezada por un tema de apertura espectacular de Nina Simone.

Para bien o para mal, esta serie es irremediablemente comparada con "Candy", una producción de Hulu que, a pesar de comenzar a grabarse después de "Love and Death" se estrenó un año antes que esta y trata exactamente de lo mismo. Honestamente, yo no he visto la versión de Hulu de esta historia, pero debo decir que al leer las críticas de ambas tengo una curiosidad tremenda y creo que también la veré, solamente para poder juzgar justamente ambos productos, claro, también porque muchos alaban la otra adaptación.

A pesar de tener sus puntos débiles, considero que es una historia interesante, con una actuación estelar por parte de Olsen, solo eso hace que sea digna de ver. Así que si les gustan los dramas basados en historias reales, "Love and Death" definitivamente es para ustedes.
