"Predator" by John McTiernan: A camouflaged Hunter (1987)

Greetings!

There were good movies and there were great movies but there were also movies that were "ahead of its time". One such movie is "Predator" by John McTiernan starring one of my all-time favorite actors "Arnold Schwarzenegger". Predator was released in 1987 when I was a very little kid but already have a mind to remember things and I remember Predator. Predator is a classic movie in its own right as it spawned numerous sequels and a prequel.

The narrative of Predator is all about the thrilling, suspenseful, and action-packed tour of duty of seven military operatives on their fight for survival when they encounter an unknown entity that is hunting them one by one by using the trees as a cover and as a way to hunt them as to not give them a trail.

The first scene between Carl Weathers and Arnold Schwarzenegger is a classic when they arm wrestling while Arnold Schwarzenegger is saying... "What's the matter, the CIA got you pushing too many pencils?" to which Carl Weathers replied with... "Make it easy on yourself, Dutch". That line of Arnold Schwarzenegger is also a classic and it is immortalized all throughout the internet.

Despite watching the film multiple times it still makes me nervous when I watched it again for this review. I actually forgot the sound effects and the sequence of scenes in this movie as well as the dialogues so when the main sound effects played I got nervous. And when they speak I carefully listen to them because of course most of the dialogue is military-related.

Then there's the first scene on the part of the Predator showing his thermal vision capability. To be honest, when I first watched this movie I really got nervous especially when the sound effects were playing and when the thermal vision capability of the Predator was shown.

As I said I already former the sequence of scenes in this movie so when the first scene where Arnold Schwarzenegger's sharp awareness triggered which forced him to look at the trees. That's when I realized that I am still hooked on this movie despite watching it multiple times now and I actually lost count of how many times I watched this movie including on free television.

The first time the anatomy of the Predator was revealed when he picked up the scorpion killed by one of Dutch's men I actually marveled at it for the first time since I am so curious about what the Predator looks like.

And then it gets me a lot more curious after the form of the hand of the Predator was revealed the Predator's cloaked anatomy was revealed. It was this moment when I watched it for the first time I was so intrigued by how he looked so I waited when it will be revealed while I was nervous about what would happen to all of Arnold's men.

And then for the first time, the appearance of the Predator is revealed. If I remember it right the appearance of the Predator looked so scary and out of this world (because he was an alien).

The revelation of the appearance of the Predator

Aside from the Predator's appearance, I was also very impressed when I saw for the first time the weaponry of the Predator. The weaponry seems to be the main weapon of the Predator which is a laser-guided laser blaster mounted on his shoulder.

One of the most interesting revelations of the movie is when the Predator is not able to see Arnold while being covered with mud. So technically, the cold mud can conceal Arnold's heat signature because it was really cold as he was just near the water and beneath the roots of a tree which of course very cold. The only thing that makes no sense is that it should have absorbed the body heat of Arnold after wearing the mud for minutes. But it was okay since we are talking about a sci-fi movie action movie.

Can you see the shape of the head and the muscle of Arnold here?

And then finally, the revelation of the face of the Predator. At first, I was so confused as to why would the Predator want to fight Arnold in hand-to-hand combat instead of blasting Arnold with his blaster and the blade on his hand. Well, it turns out that the Predator is really a hunter and it was revealed later on that their species has a tradition of hunting, and if ever they found a worthy opponent they would want to fight and kill it in a hand-to-hand combat just like what he did against Arnold. But it turns out to be a big mistake on the part of the Predator since there are traps around their battleground that were set by Arnold before he (Predator) even found Arnold.

All in all, to date, this movie is a classic as it spawned multiple sequels are a prequel. It would have been a much better franchise had Arnold appeared on part two, but he didn't.

This movie is ahead of its time since it uses technology that is not very common in a movie. The appearance of the Predator is also very "alien". While the weaponry of the Predator is definitely futuristic it sets itself apart from all the movies that I watched in the 1980s.

If you have seen the newer Predator movies you should also watch this movie. On my part, this is recommended.

That is all for now guys, catch you up with the next one. Wishing you all safety, good health, and abundance.
