Greetings!

Today, you can hardly see anyone of age who does not own a mobile device, even children as young as 5 years old can be seen using one. There is a high chance that when you see an individual holding a mobile device that individual is browsing through a social network and there is a chance that the social network is Facebook.

Facebook is the largest social network in the world boasting a user base of nearly 3 billion. Trailing Facebook are Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), Whatsapp, TikTok, and Reddit. Facebook's profit last year (2022) was $23.1 billion which is still a huge profit even if its profit last 2021 was $39.3 billion.

Facebook's beginning was from inside a dorm room at Harvard University when four people are at a dorm, namely Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. All of whom are dorm-mates (except for Eduardo Saverin) and students of Harvard University. The beginning of Facebook was quite controversial, Mark Zuckerberg was instrumental in the crash of Harvard's network while students were browsing his newly created website www.facemash.com.

The narrative of "The Social Network" starts immediately at the dorm of Mark Zuckerberg. Inside, he is blogging and simultaneously creating a website and hacking into the website of each and every house of Harvard University. And then a couple of minutes later, the network crashed.

The narrative also perfectly captures how Facebook came to life and of course with controversy involved. The narrative also does not shy away from showing some of the actions of Mark Zuckerberg aside from his computer programming skills and you would be surprised if you weren't familiar with the story of Facebook.

The movie's sequence is fast enough that you will not be bored. In fact, I think anyone who uses Facebook will be interested enough to watch this movie. The movie is very candid and very detailed on how Mark Zuckerberg pitched the idea to Eduardo Saverin. Mark Zuckerberg said to Eduardo Saverin that they would split it 70-30. 70 for Mark Zuckerberg and 30 for Eduardo Saverin by providing the money to Mark Zuckerberg.

The Social Network also mentioned the date when "The Facebook" was registered at "Network Solutions" which was on January 11, 2004, thus marking the official beginning of Facebook. It would have been a disaster if the movie failed to include the date of domain registration.

I also liked when the movie showed the first iteration of the website after it was registered by Mark Zuckerberg. To be honest, I feel like I want to see the old Facebook interface in its first week which was very nostalgic for me since I got to see it with my own eyes when I first registered to Facebook in 2007 three years after it was founded in 2004.

And here's what got my interest more. When you are going to perform some research as to whom are the founders and co-founders of Facebook there are 4-5 people that you are going to see. But in the movie, in the first iteration of the thefacebook website, Mark Zuckerberg shows Eduardo Saverin a screen showing the founders and co-founders of thefacebook, and guess what it is only Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin was on the screen (Mark Zuckerberg is Founder and CEO, and Eduardo Saverin is Co-founder and CFO".

The movie got interesting when a colleague of the Winklevoss brothers first knew about "thefacebook" and said, "Mark Zuckerberg stole our website".

I love that the movie included a scene where Bill Gates was the speaker and then an Asian girl talked to Eduardo Saverin.

The scene where Bill Gates is the speaker

There was also a scene in the movie that was somewhat dark and made me feel a little bit comfortable. It is about a chicken. To make the story short Eduardo Saverin is taking care of the chicken and then eventually it was used against Eduardo Saverin as a case of animal cruelty. I understand that Eduardo Saverin might only be doing it because of his initiation for joining a group. Now, some may argue that Eduardo Saverin should have dropped out of the group if he knew that having the chicken was not a good idea. But Eduardo Saverin was only a teen at the time and didn't have the right mindset and he doesn't know that it could be used against him. It makes me uncomfortable because an event or an act can be used against you even if that act that you have done was not really intentional on your part.

All in all the movie is a must-watch if you want to know the story of Facebook how it was built and how some friendship has ended. The movie has perfectly shown what a viewer would want to see even if they may be surprised to find some information that they don't know before watching.

I never thought a movie about the social network Facebook would be this good. Fincher directs a solid work and gives it an incrieble pace. Supported by an excellent script and good performances.

I agree, Fincher has done a great job, the actors are great too, and the script is equally impressive.
