I'm trying to remember my Columbo. It seems, as I recall that he is more about ensnaring the culprit. Whereas Holmes is more bloodless, as you say analytic. An abstract problem has to be solved and he has the intellectual tools to solve it. I feel uncomfortable when someone is ensnared, even a bad person. I want them caught, but I don't want them trapped ;))

haha I gotcha. I might agree with you if it felt vicious, but with Columbo, he always made it feel well-deserved. Maybe it was his modest demeanor.
