5 Comedy Movies: Surreal comedy, innocent humor & dark humor

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

For a long time when someone asked me what my favorite movie genre was I would answer comedy, just because they made me happy; I was too young to have a wide or defined taste in movies, that took me some more years.

Now, even though comedy isn't my favorite genre anymore I still appreciate it, and some of my all time favorite movies are comedy ones. Within comedy, I tend to like surreal humor, "innocent humor" (in spanish they call it "white humor" but when I looked for this in english it is related to white people lol) and also dark humor; now that I think of it, these three subgenres pretty much define myself.

So, take a seat and let me recommend you some of these movies and tell you why I like them :D

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (2005)

sprigofbasil

One of my current favorite genres is sci-fi, and in this movie sci-fi and comedy meet. This is a 2005 sci-fi comedy film directed by Garth Jennings, based upon previous works in the media franchise of the same name, created by Douglas Adams.* Besides the story, which is full of satire and absurdism, it's the "white humor" what I enjoy the most in here, like in the scene where a giant white roach appears upside down with no aparent reason, lol, that kind of stuff just kills me, it's almost unspeakable, it's funny because of the transition and the way it is done, I can't put into words how hillarious that looks to me. This movie is full of that and makes me laugh till cry.

This is the trailer in case you haven't seen it :D

Airplane! (1980)

animusrox

This was one of those movies I remember seeing when I was a kid, and I love it because it's surreal comedy. Airplane! is a 1980 American parody film written and directed by David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, and produced by Jon Davison.* It features Leslie Nielsen, an awesome comedy actor who I fondly remember seeing in several comedy films from my childhood. The film is a parody of the disaster film genre. Now, the reason why I find this film so hillarious is because of the awesome mix of surreal humor, the visual and verbal puns, gags, and obscure humor. I can't mention a specific scene because I just love it wholy.

If you haven't see it, you will want to after watching the trailer lol.

The Naked Gun trilogy (1988, 1991 & 1994)

tenor

This is another film featuring Leslie Nielsen, after Airplane!'s release he saw a major boost to his career, Airplane! marked a significant change in his film persona towards a new specialty in deadpan comedy, notably in the three Naked Gun films based on the six-episode television series Police Squad! The Naked Gun is a series of American crime comedy films, created by Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker (ZAZ), same team from Airplane! * I just love how funny Leslie's character dryness is among the whole absurdity in the movies as well as the ton of gags. Something I see not only in this movie but in several other comedy films, sketches or TV shows is the use of a doll when someone is falling or being hitted, the obviousness of it just kills me, lol.

The trailer of the first movie.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Now, getting over Leslie Nielsen's films as I mentioned in my Movie Tag where I included this movie as the "Funniest movie", the first time I saw the scene where Vincent accidentally shot Marvin in the face I had to pause the movie because I couldn't stop laughing, I literally laughed for about 5 minutes and because of that I was missing it so I had to pause lol, that scene is one of my favorite comedy scenes ever. This is a neo-noir black comedy crime film whose plot occurs out of chronological order and tells several stories of criminal Los Angeles.* A movie that became part of pop culture and a must watch for sure!

As you'll see in the trailer, it stars Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta :D

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

qwerabr

This one was a serendipity, I never heard of it before I saw it and I'm glad I was recommended this; it's a very witty, fun and wel-done movie, every single minute is worth the watch. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a 1998 British crime comedy film written and directed by Guy Ritchie. The story is a heist involving a self-confident young card sharp who loses £500,000 to a powerful crime lord in a rigged game of three-card brag. To pay off his debts, he and his friends decide to rob a small-time gang who happen to be operating out of the flat next door.*

I'm sure once you see the trailer and get a little hint on how good this movie is you'll want to watch it too :D (even Sting stars in it!)

As I like many movies I can't have a favorite or a "top 5" so don't think of this as one, though I really love these movies. Please let me know what you think of them and if you haven't seen them yet, go for it! I'm sure it won't be wasted time and you'll get at least a few laughs :D

This is my entry for the Movies & TV Shows Comunity Contest #2.

Thank you very much for reading till here :)

Yes, I liked his movies too. 😃 I forgot about the Dracula one until you mentioned it here. I've never seen The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy. I've been asked about this one many times, so I really should watch it.
I don't know that I've seen Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels either, so that's two I've heard about, forgot until I read your post and now must watch!
Good post and I like the ways you've explored each type of humour, something I hadn't thought of before. I don't have a favourite genre, but I do like comedy quite a bit. ;)

Oh boy I think you'll like both The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels! I highly recommend! I'm sure you'll have some laughs :D to me the second one isn't as funny as the first one but I had to mention it because it's a very welldone movie, technically :D but both are very entertaining
