The Chosen - The different among hundreds of equals (Review)

It took me a long time to start watching this series despite my interest. The reason, I can't say for sure, but I admit that I might have had some prejudice in following a story that I already knew, and I thought that this new production about the life of Jesus would probably be just another cliché. But still, a minimum interest was always present because what surrounds the series in an external aspect is at least interesting. And because of that, this weekend, almost unintentionally, I started binge-watching this production.

For those who are not familiar, The Chosen is a series that only became possible to be made through crowdfunding. The scriptwriter and director are filmmaker Dallas Jenkins, who raised $10 million for the project. Over 19,000 investors contributed, and almost 500 million people watched the production.

But, what makes The Chosen a truly excellent series?

Ah, without a doubt, first and foremost, it's Him: Yes, our Lord, Jesus! Or rather, the incredible performance of Jonathan Roumie. This guy was born to play the Messiah. Of course, there is a certain problem with me saying that since I have never personally met Jesus. But what I can say for sure is that Roumie managed to faithfully represent the Man that most people and Christians imagined: a human, humble, playful man, and of course, divine. Roumie can bring all these aspects to life in a simple gaze, and when the gaze is combined with a smile, there, perfectly represented, is all the goodness of the Son of God. Christ is portrayed differently here in general because it's not just his divine aspect that is explored, but also his human aspect. I'm sure some people may not even remember that he was a carpenter, a stonemason, and above all, a regular person who laughed at funny things, probably made jokes and certainly must have been good to be around since he managed to attract so many followers. In other works, Jesus is always depicted very seriously, though lovingly. Here it's visible that he does carry a burden, but he knows that the most important thing is to live, enjoy life, and pass on his teachings.

You might think I'm a religious person after reading the paragraph above, but the big plot twist of this text is that I'm not. I mean, I consider myself a spiritual person, but I don't have a religion. Maybe that's why you should believe me when I say that the script combined with Roumie's performance was the perfect combination for the main character of this work to be so captivating and so different from so many other interpretations we've seen out there.

The personalities of the Apostles.

In general, the only thing I knew about the personality of the Apostles is that Peter was bold and Judas was a traitor, and I didn't know anything else about the others because the productions I had watched about Jesus always represented the other apostles with generic personalities. In The Chosen, it's different, each Apostle has their personality very well defined, with their particular characteristics, and I believe that as the seasons progress, we will have the chance to get to know each of those men who were so important in the religious context.

In addition to the issue of personalities, the way Jesus calls each one of them to follow him is also very well explored, which makes these moments a very cool experience to follow.

And the sources?

Whether you are a Christian or not, you may wonder how faithful The Chosen is to the Bible. According to my research (and in fact, I had to research because I don't usually read the gospels), the series is 100% faithful to the sacred book, but the producers use poetic license to fill gaps found in the book. In addition, at the beginning of each season, the series creator and others involved, consult technical advisors whose work is to advise on historical, social, and cultural issues of the time, they are; a Rabbi named Jason Sobel, Father David Guffey, and evangelical theologian Doug Huffman.

Without a doubt, it was a great surprise for me to come to the conclusion that one of my favorite early seasons is from a series about Jesus. "The Chosen" surprises with its well-crafted script, impactful performances, and a story that, despite being already well-known and having been told in hundreds of ways that are not very surprising, this time manages to surprise us, move us, and make us laugh in the most silly and genuine way possible. For sure this is a production that deserves all the high ratings it received for its first season. Whether you are religious or not, I recommend giving this light and captivating work about this guy who changed the world with his existence a chance.

Demorei muito tempo para começar a assistir essa série, apesar do meu interesse. O motivo, não sei dizer ao certo, mas admito que talvez tivesse um pouco de preconceito em acompanhar uma história que eu já conhecia, além de pensar que provavelmente aquela nova produção sobre a vida de Jesus seria apenas mais um clichê. Mas, ainda assim, um interesse mínimo sempre esteve presente, pois o que envolve a série em um aspecto externo é, no mínimo, interessante. E por causa disso, neste fim de semana, quase sem querer, comecei a maratonar essa produção.

Para quem não conhece, The Chosen é uma série que só se tornou possível ser feita através de um financiamento coletivo. O responsável pelo roteiro e direção é o cineasta Dallas Jenkins, que conseguiu arrecadar 10 milhões de dólares para o projeto. Mais de 19 mil investidores contribuíram e quase 500 milhões de pessoas já assistiram à série.

Mas, o que torna The Chosen uma série realmente excelente?

Ah, sem dúvida, em primeiro lugar, é Ele: sim, nosso Senhor Jesus! Ou melhor dizendo, a atuação incrível de Jonathan Roumie. Esse cara nasceu para interpretar o Messias. É claro que há uma certa problemática em eu afirmar isso, afinal, nunca conheci Jesus pessoalmente. Mas o que posso dizer com certeza é que Roumie conseguiu representar fielmente o Jesus que a maioria das pessoas e cristãos imaginavam: um homem humano, humilde, brincalhão e, claro, divino. Roumie consegue dar vida a todos esses aspectos num simples olhar, e quando o olhar se soma ao sorriso, está ali, perfeitamente representada toda a bondade do Filho de Deus. Jesus é retratado de maneira diferente aqui em geral porque não é apenas seu aspecto divino que é explorado, mas também seu aspecto humano. Tenho certeza que algumas pessoas podem nem se lembrar que ele era carpinteiro, pedreiro, e acima de tudo, uma pessoa comum que ria de coisas engraçadas, provavelmente fazia piadas e certamente deve ter sido uma boa companhia já que conseguiu atrair tantos seguidores. Em outras obras, Jesus é sempre retratado com muita seriedade, embora com amor. Aqui é visível que ele carrega um fardo, mas sabe que o mais importante é viver, aproveitar a vida e passar adiante seus ensinamentos.

Vocês devem achar que sou uma pessoa religiosa depois de lerem o parágrafo acima, mas o grande plot twist deste texto é que eu não sou. Quer dizer, me considero uma pessoa espiritualizada, mas não tenho uma religião. Talvez por isso, você deva acreditar quando digo que o roteino e atuação de Roumie foi a combinação perfeita pra que o personagem principal dessa obra fosse tão cativante e tão diferente de tantas outras interpretações que ja vimos por aí.

As personalidades dos Apóstolos.

No geral, a única coisa que eu sabia sobre a personalidade dos Apóstolos é que Pedro era ousado e Judas traidor, dos demais eu não sabia nada, pois as produções que eu tinha assistido sobre Jesus sempre representaram os demais apóstolos com personalidades genéricas ou pouco cativantes. Em The Chosen, é diferente, cada Apóstolo tem sua personalidade muito bem definida, com suas características particulares, e acredito que, na medida em que as temporadas avançarem, teremos a chance de conhecer cada vez mais cada um daqueles homens que foram tão importantes no contexto religioso.

Além da questão das personalidades, a forma como Jesus chama cada um deles para segui-los também é muito bem explorada, o que faz com que esses momentos sejam uma experiência muito legal de acompanhar.

E as fontes?

Sendo cristão ou não, talvez você se questione o quão fiel The Chosen é a bíblia. Segundo minhas pesquisas, (e de fato eu tive que pesquisar pois não costumo os evangelhos) a série é 100% fiel ao livro sagrado, porém os produtores usam de liberdade poética pra preencher lacunas encontradas no livro. Além disso, a cada inicio de temporada, o criador da série e os demais envolvidos fazem consultoria técnicas com pessoas cujo trabalho é fazer aconselhamentos a cerca de questões históricas sociais e culturais da época, são eles: um rabino chamado Jason Sobel, o padre David Guffey e o teólogo evangélico Doug Huffman.

Considerações finais:

Sem dúvida, foi uma grande surpresa pra mim chegar a conclusão de que uma das minhas primeira temporadas favoritas é de uma série sobre Jesus. The chosen surpreende com seu roteiro bem feito, atuações impactantes e a história, que mesmo já muito conhecida e tendo sido contada de centenas de formas pouco surpreendentes, dessa vez consegue nos surpreender, emocionar e nos fazer rir da forma mais boba e genuina possível.

Com today certeza é uma produção que merece todas as notas altas que recebeu por sua primeira temporada. Você sendo religioso ou não, indico da uma chance a essa obra leve e cativante sobre esse cara que mudou o mundo com sua existência.
