In early November, Inside Man arrived on Netflix, a four-episode miniseries conceived by Sherlock's brilliant mind Steven Moffat and starring David Tennant and Stanley Tucci. It's an intriguing thriller, filmed in a decidedly fresh and brilliant way, but it suffers from a few problems, not least of which is the sometimes forced and implausible script. Nevertheless, it is a really enjoyable show which, thanks mainly to the work of the two great lead actors, entertains for its four-hour duration without ever becoming boring. Having seen all the episodes, we are now ready to tell you about it.

The Plot

In an American prison is Grieff, a former criminologist sentenced to death for the murder of his wife. He is the first to admit that he is "a piece of shit", but he seeks to redeem himself by solving cases that he believes have "moral value" to the world. "I have a small capacity, almost no resources and very limited time," he says, in an intense moment in the series. "Within that framework, I would like to do as much good as I can.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Harry Watling, a local pastor, becomes embroiled in a terrible misunderstanding with Janice, his son Ben's maths tutor, and so decides to sequester her in his home to protect his family. Grieff's and Harry's worlds meet through a journalist, Beth Davenport, who suspects that her friend Janice is in trouble and asks Grieff for help.

Inside Man is certainly a very enjoyable series, with some excellent moments and, above all, a first-rate cast. In particular, Stanley Tucci is absolutely fabulous as the death row criminologist Jefferson Grieff for his exceptional way of appearing detached and totally rational in a situation where he could now be heading for a total breakdown. What is really interesting, from a character writing perspective, is his acceptance of the death penalty because he is sure that he has earned it and therefore does not try to do anything to prolong his now cursed life. This particular characterisation places an intriguing and incredibly fascinating aura around him.

On the other hand, David Tennant is also remarkable in his portrayal of a well-liked young priest who, following a terrible misunderstanding, begins to descend into a deeper and deeper abyss from which everyone, including himself, knows he will never emerge. His story gives him and his Mary no hope and their actions are so consciously desperate that they feel empathy and pity even when they are the perpetrators and not the victims. In the same situation, Janice Fife, played by a stunning Dolly Wells, the only real victim in the story, is shown to us almost as if her blatant intelligence is the cause of all the misfortune that has befallen her when in fact it is simply, as Grieff often repeats, a bad day on which she met the wrong people.

From a directorial point of view, Inside Man is of a very high standard. You can see the hand of an experienced director like Paul McGuigan, author of Slevin, Criminal Pact, behind the camera. The episodes are full of virtuosity of all kinds. Wide tracking shots, long and intense sequence shots, close-ups of the actors used as a narrative tool and not just as a means of showing dialogue. Even the way the camera moves from the upper to the lower floor of Harry's house, or the shots in Grieff's cell where we can observe what he sees, are truly first-rate. The direction is, without a doubt, the strong point of the whole project.

The problems lie in the script. Although the plot is basically interesting, the solutions are often forced and make little sense, especially when it comes to Harry. It often feels like there must have been other ways to do this. We fully appreciate that this is an extraordinary situation for a quiet man of God, but after the initial shock, he certainly should have acted much more intelligently. Grieff, on the other hand, has the opposite problem. He is presented to us as a brilliant criminologist, but at too many points he seems to come to conclusions about the 'cases' he is working on without any real reasoning. He seems closer to the super-heroic intuitive abilities of Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes than to a mere observer, albeit one with a brilliant and keen intellect.

Some of the script's choices are then decidedly out of place and forced. From Grieff's comical sidekick to the photographic memory he uses to "take notes", to the questionable choices of someone as brilliant as Janice at the beginning of her imprisonment, to the final solution devised by Harry and Mary. Very often, the most elegant and stylistic narrative solution was sought rather than a reasonable one that would have made Inside Man closer to the earthly and human situation it wanted to portray.

The choice not to prolong the series in any way was a very good one. In the four episodes of which the series consists, the story is told in a complete manner and to the total satisfaction of the viewer. The pace, also helped by an excellent soundtrack, is always tight and intense, which helps to heighten the tension and anxiety that such a story must inevitably generate.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Inside Man is a good series, excellently filmed and above all excellently acted. Narratively, it has some interesting ideas, but it often suffers from a script that aims too much at the dramatic twist rather than what would be good for the story. In any case, a perfectly sufficient show that is well worth watching.

Il s'agit d'un thriller intriguant, filmé de manière résolument fraîche et brillante, qui souffre cependant de quelques problèmes liés notamment au scénario, parfois forcé et peu crédible. Néanmoins, c'est un spectacle vraiment agréable qui, grâce principalement au travail des deux grands acteurs principaux, divertit pendant les quatre heures de sa durée sans jamais devenir ennuyeux. Après avoir vu tous les épisodes, nous sommes maintenant prêts à vous en parler.

Inside Man est certainement une série très agréable, avec d'excellents moments et, surtout, un casting de premier ordre. En particulier, Stanley Tucci est absolument fabuleux dans le rôle du criminologue condamné à mort Jefferson Grieff pour sa façon exceptionnelle d'apparaître détaché et totalement rationnel dans une situation où il pourrait à présent se diriger vers une dépression totale. Ce qui est vraiment intéressant, du point de vue de l'écriture du personnage, c'est son acceptation de la peine de mort parce qu'il est sûr de l'avoir méritée et qu'il n'essaie donc pas de faire quoi que ce soit pour prolonger sa vie désormais maudite. Cette caractérisation particulière place une aura intrigante et incroyablement fascinante autour de lui.

D'autre part, David Tennant est également remarquable dans son interprétation d'un jeune curé apprécié de tous qui, à la suite d'un terrible malentendu, commence à descendre dans un abîme de plus en plus profond dont tout le monde, y compris lui-même, sait qu'il ne ressortira jamais. Son histoire ne lui donne, ainsi qu'à sa Marie, aucun espoir et leurs actions sont si consciemment désespérées qu'ils ressentent de l'empathie et de la pitié même lorsqu'ils sont les auteurs et non les victimes. Dans la même situation, Janice Fife, jouée par une Dolly Wells époustouflante, la seule véritable victime de l'histoire, nous est montrée presque comme si son intelligence flagrante était la cause de tous les malheurs qui lui sont arrivés alors qu'en fait il s'agit simplement, comme le répète souvent Grieff, d'une mauvaise journée au cours de laquelle elle a rencontré les mauvaises personnes.

Du point de vue de la direction, Inside Man est d'un très haut niveau. On peut voir la main d'un réalisateur expérimenté comme Paul McGuigan, auteur de Slevin, Pacte criminel, derrière la caméra. Les épisodes débordent de virtuosité en tout genre. De larges travellings, des plans séquences longs et intenses, des gros plans sur les acteurs utilisés comme un outil narratif et non comme un simple moyen de montrer les dialogues. Même la façon dont la caméra passe de l'étage supérieur à l'étage inférieur de la maison de Harry, ou les plans dans la cellule de Grieff où nous pouvons observer ce qu'il voit, sont vraiment de premier ordre. La mise en scène est, sans l'ombre d'un doute, le point fort de l'ensemble du projet.

Les problèmes se situent au niveau du scénario. Bien que l'intrigue soit fondamentalement intéressante, les solutions sont souvent forcées et n'ont guère de sens, surtout lorsqu'il s'agit de Harry. On a souvent l'impression de se dire qu'il y avait certainement d'autres moyens de faire cela. Nous sommes pleinement conscients qu'il s'agit d'une situation extraordinaire pour un homme de Dieu tranquille, mais après le choc initial, il aurait certainement dû agir de manière beaucoup plus intelligente. Grieff, par contre, a le problème inverse. Il nous est présenté comme un brillant criminologue, mais à de trop nombreux moments, il semble parvenir à des conclusions sur les "affaires" sur lesquelles il travaille sans véritable raisonnement. Il semble plus proche des capacités d'intuition super-héroïque du Sherlock Holmes de Benedict Cumberbatch que d'un simple observateur, bien que doté d'une intelligence brillante et vive.

Certains choix scénaristiques sont alors résolument déplacés et forcés. De l'acolyte comique de Grieff à la mémoire photographique qu'il utilise pour "prendre des notes", en passant par les choix discutables d'une personne aussi brillante que Janice au début de son emprisonnement, jusqu'à la solution finale imaginée par Harry et Mary. Très souvent, la solution narrative la plus élégante et stylistique a été recherchée plutôt qu'une solution raisonnable qui aurait rendu Inside Man plus proche de la situation terrestre et humaine qu'il voulait dépeindre.

Le choix de ne pas vouloir prolonger la série de quelque manière que ce soit était un très bon choix. Dans les quatre épisodes dont se compose la série, l'histoire est racontée de manière complète et à la satisfaction totale du spectateur. Le rythme, également aidé par une excellente bande sonore, est toujours serré et intense, ce qui contribue à accroître la tension et l'anxiété qu'une telle histoire doit inévitablement susciter.

Conclusion

En conclusion, Inside Man est une bonne série, excellemment filmée et surtout excellemment interprétée. Sur le plan narratif, il a des idées intéressantes, mais il souffre souvent d'un scénario qui vise trop le rebondissement dramatique plutôt que ce qui serait bon pour le récit. En tout cas, un spectacle tout à fait suffisant qui vaut vraiment la peine d'être regardé.
