The misfortune began when the Patel family and the zoo animals traveled in a Japanese boat; the boat did not have the safety mechanisms. In the middle of the storm, Pi, desperate to save his family and struggling with some of the crew, fell into the dinghy and then from the top of the boat the zebra.

The shipwreck caused Pi, clinging to the boat, to move away from the ship, the orphan kept asking forgiveness to his family for not being able to save them. Later, he would realize that they (Pi and the zebra) were not the only ones in the boat; after the deluge Pi rescues the chimpanzee from the zoo called: Orange Juice; besides, surprisingly a scared hyena would attack them all, killing the zebra, the monkey... not to mention that after so many hours a Bengal tiger would come out: Peter Parker.

Pi had tried to approach him as a child and as a lesson from his father for that imprudence, he had to see how the feline devoured a live goat, a fact that overshadowed the rest of his childhood, until his adolescence when his will to live returned... he fell in love with a ballerina. His sharing was short-lived because of the journey that brought him to this fact: cohabiting with a hungry and frightened tiger inside a boat in the middle of the sea.

There were many things that Pi and Peter Parker lived together, at first they survived due to the elements that were inside the boat, then another storm in the middle of nowhere made him lose part of the supplies. Writing helped this boy a lot, being alert to the feline and taking care of him were some of the elements that helped him to stay alive.

After a long time sailing they reached an island, where they could eat, drink water and there were many meerkats; however, as night approached the young man noticed something strange in that place, since everything that lived there was hiding and it turns out that the island was carnivorous, this made the tiger and Pi decide to go to sea again in the morning.

Pi was rescued by some fishermen in the area, where in the midst of dehydration and tears, he watched as his companion Peter Parker sought his own way in the jungle, without any attitude of gratitude for the 227 days of survival between them.

Pi told the writer that he gave two versions of the events, this one that we have just learned about and another where he made an allegory giving a human role to each animal that was with him on the boat, the boy being the Bengal tiger. This at first left the interviewer in doubt and it was up to him to believe either of them.

With two versions of events, Pi still had an enormous learning curve. If everything he experienced was a product of his imagination and served as a test to strengthen his faith, which he had been searching for for years, it was certainly a great spiritual challenge.

We, as viewers, can come up with endless theories about what happened with this film. What is clear is that in the midst of difficulties there is always a light at the end of the road; believing in ourselves is part of our evolution and keeping the faith is vital to succeed in the midst of any tribulation.

Life of Pi: Mucho más que una película de aventura y ficción

Este post tenía el fin de participar en el concurso #28 y por distintas razones no llegué a tiempo. Sin embargo, quiero compartir mi impresión y siempre sobrará motivos para recordar esta grandiosa historia estrenada en el 2012, inspirada en el libro: Life of Pi (2001) del autor: Yann Martel (Español - Canadiense); ya que, deja algunas reflexiones a consideración del espectador. Un dato curioso, el director Ange Lee contrató a Steven Callahan, por ser sobreviviente de un naufragio de 76 días; de esta manera, estaría blindado a la historia de elementos reales de supervivencia.

El trama comienza cuando un escritor visita al único sobreviviente del náufrago a su hogar y éste decide contarle la historia de su vida, abarcando la niñez, la adolescencia y todo lo que trajo perder a su familia siendo muy joven.

Piscine Molitor Patel es el nombre del protagonista, tuvo que lidiar con las burlas por su nombre en la niñez y por tal razón, su diminutivo "Pi". Su padre Santosh Patel tenía un zoológico en la India y por razones económicas decidió cerrarlo, todos los animales que habitaban en él esperaba venderlos y hacer una nueve vida con su familia en Canadá, la cual estaba compuesta por su esposa y dos hijos.

La desgracia empezaría cuando la familia Patel y los animales del zoológico viajaran en una embarcación japonesa; la misma no contaba con los mecanismos de seguridad. En medio de la tormenta Pí desesperado por salvar a su familia y forcejeando con parte de los tripulantes, cayó al bote auxiliar y luego desde lo más alto del barco la cebra.

El naufragio hizo que Pi aferrado al bote se alejara de la embarcación, el huérfano no paraba de pedir perdón a su familia por no poder salvarlos. Posteriormente, se daría cuente que ellos (Pi y la cebra) no eran los únicos en la embarcación; después del diluvio Pi rescata a la chimpancé del zoológico llamada: Jugo de Naranja; además, sorpresivamente una hiena asustada los atacaría a todos, muriendo la cebra, el mono... sin contar que después de tantas horas saldría un tigre de bengala: Peter Parker.

Pi había intentado acercarse a él siendo un niño y como una lección de su padre por esa imprudencia, tuvo que ver como el felino se devoraba a una cabra viva, hecho que opacó el resto de su infancia, hasta que en su adolescencia volvió sus ganas de vivir... se enamoró de una bailarina. Su compartir duró poco por el viaje que lo trajo a este hecho: Cohabitar con un tigre hambriento y asustadizo dentro de un bote en el medio del mar.

Fueron muchas cosas las que vivieron juntos Pi y Peter Parker, en principio sobrevivieron debido a los elementos que habían dentro del bote, luego otra tormenta en el medio de la nada hizo que perdiera parte de los insumos. Escribir ayudó mucho a este muchacho, estar alerta ante el felino y cuidar de él fueron unos de los elementos que lo ayudaron a mantenerse con vida.

Después de mucho tiempo navegando llegaron a una isla, donde pudieron comer, tomar agua y habían muchas suricatas; no obstante, al acercarse la noche el joven pudo notar algo extraño en aquel lugar, ya que todo lo que vivía allí se escondía y resulta que la isla era carnívora, esto hizo que en la mañana el tigre y Pi decidieran lanzarse al mar nuevamente.

Fueron otros días muy duros para ellos hasta que finalmente tocarían tierra en las costas de México, Pi fue rescatado por unos pescadores de la zona, donde en medio de la deshidratación y con lágrimas, veía como su compañero Peter Parker buscaba su propio camino en la selva, sin ninguna actitud de gratitud por los 227 días de sobrevivencia entre ellos.

Pi le contaba al escritor que dio dos versiones de los hechos, esta que acabamos de conocer y otra donde hizo una alegoría dándole un rol humano a cada animal que estuvo con él en el barco, siendo el muchacho el tigre de bengala. Esto en principio dejó dudas al entrevistador y quedaba de su parte creer en cualquiera de ellas.

Con dos versiones de los hechos, de igual manera Pi tenía un enorme aprendizaje. Si todo lo vivido fue producto de su imaginación y le sirvió como prueba para afianzar su fe, en la que tenía años buscándose, sin duda fue un gran reto espiritual.

A nosotros como espectador, podemos sacar un sinfín de teorías sobre lo ocurrido con esta película. Lo que si es evidente que en medio de las dificultades siempre hay una luz al final del camino; creer en nosotros mismos es parte de nuestra evolución y mantener la fe es vital para salir airosos en medio de cualquier tribulación.
