Review on Get Hard (2015)
Get Hard is a comedy movie released in the year 2015 and it stars Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart as the two major characters in the film. Will Ferrell, or better known by his character in the movie as James King, is a wealthy, naive hedge fund manager, who gets wrongly convicted of fraud and sentenced to a decade in a maximum-security prison.
With only 30 days to prepare for his incarceration, he reaches out for the help of Kevin Hart we who plays Darnell Lewis. Darnell Lewis is the owner of a car wash. James King mistakes him for an ex-con simply because Darnell happens to be “Black”. Darnell on realizing that James is the wealthy type of guy and what he stands to gain by seizes this one time opportunity by going along with the impression that James had towards him and teaching him how to cope in prison as though he has ever been there before.
The movie gives a good dose of controversial humor, often delivered in an offensive kind of way. A significant portion of the jokes revolve around the fear of prison rape; that is in the homophobic sense, and racial jokes as well. It was really hilarious seeing Ferrell's character trying to act tough for fear of ending up as meat to prisoners. And Darnell was just trying his best in being someone that he actually isn't and making James go through trainings and challenges that nearly lands him in trouble at some points.
The collaboration in this movie between two comedic figures is the kind that people would look forward to. The both gave us their unique style of comedy and it made it just so impossible not to laugh. Ferrell gives his character as this clueless and arrogant wealthy person, while Kevin is the regular ‘joe’ everyman who sees an opportunity. The humour was regarded to be genuine. Seeing James able adapt to prison life even though he never made it there within a short period of time was just amazing and to think of the person who groomed him into such person had never stepped his feet into a prison.
I was glad that James eventually was was vindicated and didn't have to go to prison at the end but I felt like the resolution of James King's legal troubles feels kind of rushed. It was like they were more focused on the comedic aspect over the being more realistic with how they handled James’ legal situation and how it ended up.
Anyone who is a Will Ferrell fan or Kevin Hart would definitely enjoy watching this one. I, for one, enjoyed it. I'll be honest though, the title of the movie at the sounded different from the actual theme of the movie but after watching it it balanced perfectly and made sense. It's the kind of film I'll give an 8 out of 10. I got what I expected and maybe even more as a result of having two guys like Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart in one movie. It was indeed a great team up between those two. Thanks for your time, see you next time.
