Christopher Nolan is my favorite filmmaker. His unique approaches to stories and treatment hold him high in my book.

I recently decided to go on a Nolan marathon and rank his movies from my least favorite to most favorite.

Here is how I ranked the previous 6 movies in my [part 1](Ranking Christopher Nolan's Movies Part 1)

11- Tenet

10 - Insomnia

9- The Dark Knight Rises

8- Following

7- The Prestige

6- Batman Begins

5- Interstellar

Interstellar is a beautifully shot movie. The cinematography is amazing and the cast did great acting. The concept that Nolan chose to operate on is very intriguing. You get to explore a world with amazing details in every part of the journey.

The emotional moments aren't really earned. They're well-acted and the actors really make you connect with them. But, they're not really earned. Every movie needs a heart and soul and this movie lacked it to a great extent, I appreciate the Nolan twist and turn world but maybe here some more heart would have sufficed.

The film is still a beautiful worldly experience but the emotions seem forced, which wouldn't have been the problem if the movie wasn't almost 3 hours long.

4- The Dark Knight

I know some people rank this as number 1 or 2 at worst. But, we are in the nitpicking state.

The Dark Knight gave us a fight for Gotham's soul. A sense of justice, a sense of urgency, and a sense of fear are all aspects of what makes this movie a masterpiece. I previously wrote about how this film is a great meetup point between showmanship and game theory. And I could write a book about every aspect.

The only reason this is ranked 4th is the coordination of fight scenes plus some technical aspects. It sounds silly, but when comparing the best movies of such a great filmmaker, those details are what decide the ranking.

3- Dunkirk

This film succeeds where Interstellar failed.

Nolan's take on a war film is something I really admired. Yes, the cinematography is beautiful as always, but this is where it is most purposeful. You are put on the plane, you are put on the beach, you are put in the war and its messiness as a soldier.

The sense of urgency is all over the film. You always feel the clock ticking inside your head and that's the brilliant of the movie's length as it fixes the one thing wrong with Interstellar.

Yes, you are not as connected to the characters and their stories. But, that's not where the plot is. Plus it compensates for that with familiar feelings and the characters' urgency to survive. Yes, we don't relate to the life of a soldier but we all relate to wanting to survive or save our loved ones. And for a movie less than two hours long, that's more than enough.

2- Inception

This film is Nolan's magnum opus of balancing every aspect of the story he tries to tell in the film world.

The sci-fi aspect of it is intriguing, it also blends in well with the emotional aspect of the characters. Both of those things are introduced through an accessible method of a heist movie. That is the perfect mix. Christopher Nolan doesn't hold your hands to walk you through the film. Although it does contain mini-exhibition scenes, those are justified within the film's world.

The cinematic, thrill and emotional experience is gripping within this world. Personalized to connect for different reasons at the smallest details.

1- Memento

Throughout my time in this community, I talked about two movies that get a 10/10 from me, Synecdoche, New York and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Memento belongs on that list.

Memento has a great rewatchable value. What sets it apart is that it has that value coupled with the fact that you can watch the movie in a circle and pick any point to start watching it. It also allows you an opportunity to watch it in chronological order or even reverse chronological order. And whatever way you watch it will give you a different experience.

Christopher Nolan gives us a great experience with this movie. You are put in the head of an anterograde amnesia patient. And he adds to that with an element of revenge creating the greatest mystery/thriller movie ever.

The conclusion of the movie offers the ending you desire depending on how you relate to the movie and any of its characters. To me, Memento is a perfect movie.

In Conclusion

Each of these movies is worth its own breakdown and review. I created this list just to have something different, something challenging, and something fun.

Please let me know if you disagree with my ranking, why, or share your own ranking.

I've only seen the two Batman movies. I have always wanted to see Interstellar. I need to get around and do that sometime. I just have a really hard time carving out the two hours or whatever to watch a movie these dsays.

I haven't watched Dunkirk yet so cannot confirm for sure your ranking and need to re-watch Memento as I have forgotten that one. But inception and interstellar were pretty great and made you think a lot. Inception seems like an adult version of the Walle film but I still liked it for the cinematic effects and the great idea and execution.
