Never have I ever review - Chef kiss [ ENG/ESP]

This coming out of age - comedy series was created by Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Project) and Lang Fisher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and is centered on the life of a girl of Indian descent and the cultural clashes that this generates with her family and American society. Netflix original has been a great success, it has 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, so good was the reception that it was renewed after its second season until a fifth. The third season premieres this August, so in this post I make a small review of the first two seasons.

Esta serie del género coming out of age - comedia fue creada por Mindy Kaling (The Office, The Mindy Proyect) y Lang Fisher (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) y esta centrada en la vida de una chica de ascendencia hindú y los choques culturales que esto le genera con su familia y con la sociedad estadounidense. Original de Netflix ha sido un gran éxito, cuenta con 94% en Rotten Tomatoes, tan buena fue la recepción que fue renovada después de su segunda temporada hasta una quinta. La tercera temporada se estrena este agosto, así que en este post les hago un pequeño review de las primeras dos temporadas.

In the first season, our protagonist Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) wants a new start in high school at the beginning of the school year, since last year she was stigmatized for being the "crippled" girl in a wheelchair, as she was paralyzed by the trauma caused by the death of her dad. As part of this new beginning Decir devises a plan with her two best friends: Eleonor and Fabiola, where they will no longer be the nerds, they will have boyfriends and be the cool girls. In the second season the girls have already changed a lot and the friendship group has expanded, but things are still the same for Devi, she can't get her life in order and have a stable relationship, the only constant in her life are her friends and even this is put in danger when her mother decides that they should return to India, since she needs the support of her family for Devi's upbringing.

En la primera temporada, nuestra protagonista Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) quiere un nuevo comienzo en la escuela secundar al empezar el año escolar, ya que el año pasado fue estigmatizada por ser la chica "lisiada" en silla de ruedas, ya que esta quedó paralizada por el trauma causado por la muerte de su papá. Como parte de este nuevo comienzo Decir elabora un plan con sus dos mejores amigas: Eleonor y Fabiola, donde ya no serán las nerds, tendrán novios y serán las chicas cool. En la segunda temporada las chicas ya han cambiado bastante y el grupo de amistad se ha ampliado, pero las cosas para Devi siguen igual, no consigue poner su vida en orden y tener una relación estable, lo único constante en su vida son sus amigas e incluso esto se pone en peligro cuando su mamá decide que deberían volver a la India, ya que esta necesita el apoyo de su familia para la crianza de Devi.

I know it's a summary that doesn't say much but I didn't want to do spoilers because the series really has a lot of details that are best to discover for ourselves. Now what was it that I liked about the series; even though the series focuses on a narrative that would seem alien if you don't belong to the ethnicity our protagonist is totally the opposite, because that is only one of the points it covers. The series deals with very real issues such as grief and the consequences of not dealing with it, but the nice thing is that not only from Devi's point of view as a teenager but how everyone in her family deals with it, more specifically her mother, I think sometimes we forget that our parents are also beings who feel and have problems and that is something that makes us reflect on the series. The series also covers the problems of every teenage boy, love, heartbreak, fights with friends, what is right, what is wrong, drugs, sexuality, grades, all from a very funny perspective and highlighting something that I found very nice: we are not alone, we all have a support system in family and/or friends that even though they may be annoyed with us they will always be there when we need them and that is a very important message. The series also explores self-esteem and self-perception and how we must learn not to conform and to set limits.

Se que es un resumen que no dice mucho pero no quería hacer spoilers porque la serie realmente tiene muchos detalles que es mejor descubrir por nosotros mismos. Ahora bien, que fue lo que me gustó de la serie; a pesar de que la serie se centra en una narrativa que parecería ajena sino perteneces a la etnicidad nuestra protagonista es totalmente lo contrario, porque ese es sólo uno de los puntos que abarca. La serie trata temas muy reales como el duelo y las consecuencias de no afrontarlo, pero lo bonito es que no solo desde el punto de vista de Devi como adolescente sino de como todos en su familia lidian con el, más específicamente su madre, creo que a veces nos olvidamos que nuestros padres también son seres que sienten y tienen problemas y eso es algo que nos hace reflexionar en la serie. La serie también abarca las problemáticas de todo chico adolescente, el amor, el desamor, las peleas con los amigos, lo que está bien, lo que está mal, las drogas, la sexualidad, las calificaciones, todo desde una perspectiva muy divertida y resaltando algo que me pareció muy bonito: no estamos solos, todos tenemos un sistema de apoyo en familiares y/o amigos que a pesar de que puedan estar molestos con nosotros siempre estarán ahí cuando los necesitemos y eso es un mensaje bastante importante. La serie también explora la autoestima y la autopercepción y como debemos aprender a no conformarnos y a sentar límites.

In addition to what I already said, the series in terms of production is very good. The dialogues are very well written (Mindy Kaling comedy quality) and hilarious and the whole aesthetics of Hindu customs make it very interesting. It is also worth noting that the casting is quite inclusive counting people of different ethnicities and minorities and the LGBTI+ community.

No matter what age you are the series will hook you, plus you can watch it super fast because each chapter is between 25-30min. I really recommend it, I give it 4.5/5. That's all for today, thanks for making it this far, bye!

Sumado a lo que ya dije, la serie en términos de producción es muy buena. Los diálogos están muy bien escritos (calidad de comedia Mindy Kaling) y son divertidísimos y toda la estética de las costumbres hindues la hacen muy interesante. También cabe destacar que el casting es bastante inclusivo contando con personas de diferentes etnias y minorías y la comunidad LGBTI+.
No importa la edad que tengas la serie te va a enganchar, además de que la puedes ver súper rápido porque cada capítulo tiene entre 25-30min. Realmente la recomiendo le doy 4.5/5. Esto es todo por hoy, gracias por llegar hasta aquí. ¡Adiós!
