Reflections on "The Two Popes": a film about change, faith and humanity

I hope you are doing very well. As always, it is a pleasure to address you through this medium to share some thoughts and reflections, this time inspired by a movie I recently watched for entertainment purposes, but which ended up leaving me with much more than that.
En medio del ajetreo diario que muchas veces nos consume, detenernos un momento para ver una película y analizarla con calma puede convertirse en un acto de introspección muy necesario. Por eso, hoy quiero hablarles de “Los Dos Papas”, un filme que, en mi opinión, puede definirse con dos palabras: cambio y aceptación. Sin duda, una obra que vale la pena ver si deseas conectar o comprender un poco más el corazón humano que late detrás de los líderes de la Iglesia Católica.
In the midst of the daily hustle and bustle that often consumes us, stopping for a moment to watch a film and analyze it calmly can become a very necessary act of introspection. That is why today I want to talk to you about "The Two Popes ", a film that, in my opinion, can be defined with two words: change and acceptance. Undoubtedly, a work worth watching if you want to connect or understand a little more the human heart that beats behind the leaders of the Catholic Church.
La película, disponible en Netflix y estrenada en el año 2019, cuenta con las interpretaciones magistrales de Jonathan Pryce (como el Papa Francisco), Anthony Hopkins (como el Papa Benedicto XVI), y Juan Minujín (como el joven Jorge Bergoglio). En ella, seguimos la historia del cardenal Bergoglio, quien viaja a Roma con la intención de presentar su renuncia. Sin embargo, en lugar de una simple entrega de papeles, vive una serie de encuentros personales e íntimos con el entonces Papa Benedicto que terminan transformando a ambos.
The film, available on Netflix and released in 2019, features masterful performances by Jonathan Pryce (as Pope Francis), Anthony Hopkins (as Pope Benedict XVI), and Juan Minujín (as the young Jorge Bergoglio). In it, we follow the story of Cardinal Bergoglio, who travels to Rome with the intention of submitting his resignation. However, instead of simply handing in his papers, he experiences a series of personal and intimate encounters with the then Pope Benedict that end up transforming both of them.
Debo confesar que si no hubiera sido por la reciente muerte del Papa Francisco, quizás nunca me habría topado con esta película. Como suele pasar, el interés mediático se despierta más por la muerte que por la vida de alguien. Me resulta triste ver cómo tantos mensajes hermosos y sentidos surgieron en redes sociales después de su partida, cuando hubiese sido aún más valioso que se difundieran en vida. Pero la vida es así, y cada experiencia tiene su momento.
I must confess that had it not been for the recent death of Pope Francis, I might never have come across this film. As it usually happens, media interest is aroused more by the death than by the life of someone. I find it sad to see how so many beautiful and heartfelt messages emerged on social networks after his departure, when it would have been even more valuable to have them spread during his lifetime. But life is like that, and every experience has its moment.
Como católica practicante, aunque más enfocada en la fe que en el seguimiento a figuras religiosas, me resultó muy interesante conocer más a fondo a dos Papas que marcaron épocas diferentes. El Papa Francisco fue elegido cuando yo tenía apenas 11 años, así que no viví conscientemente su elección. Sin embargo, esta película me permitió mirar más allá del personaje público, y descubrir al ser humano detrás del traje blanco.
As a practicing Catholic, although more focused on faith than on following religious figures, I found it very interesting to learn more about two Popes who marked different eras. Pope Francis was elected when I was just 11 years old, so I did not consciously live his election. However, this film allowed me to look beyond the public persona, and to discover the human being behind the white suit.
Uno de los aspectos más valiosos del filme es cómo logra generar empatía por ambas figuras, a pesar de sus diferencias ideológicas. Por un lado, Benedicto XVI, conservador, tradicionalista y reservado. Por el otro, Bergoglio, más progresista, inclusivo y con una visión social marcada por su labor en los barrios pobres de Argentina. La película muestra, además, que en el cónclave de 2005, Bergoglio fue un fuerte candidato, aunque finalmente fue Ratzinger quien resultó elegido.
One of the most valuable aspects of the film is how it manages to generate empathy for both figures, despite their ideological differences. On the one hand, Benedict XVI, conservative, traditionalist and reserved. On the other, Bergoglio, more progressive, inclusive and with a social vision marked by his work in the poor neighborhoods of Argentina. The film also shows that in the 2005 conclave, Bergoglio was a strong candidate, although Ratzinger was finally elected.
No sabía qué esperar de una película centrada en dos hombres mayores conversando. Podría parecer aburrida, pero fue todo lo contrario. Los Dos Papas me pareció profundamente interesante y humana. Los debates entre ambos líderes religiosos no son solo teológicos, sino existenciales. Las partes que más me gustaron fueron aquellas en las que abren su corazón, y comparten sus miedos, errores, dudas y esperanzas. Son conversaciones que nos recuerdan que, antes que Papas, son personas.
I didn't know what to expect from a movie centered around two older men having a conversation. It might seem boring, but it was quite the opposite. *I found The Two Popes deeply interesting and human. The debates between the two religious leaders are not just theological, but existential. The parts I liked the most were the ones where they open their hearts, and share their fears, mistakes, doubts and hopes. They are conversations that remind us that, before being Popes, they are people.
Uno de los aspectos más impactantes fue conocer una parte de la vida del Papa Francisco que desconocía: su rol durante la dictadura militar en Argentina. La película toca con sensibilidad el episodio en el que se ve involucrado en el secuestro de dos sacerdotes jesuitas, a quienes les quitó el permiso para dar misa como medida para protegerlos. Esta decisión, aunque tomada con buenas intenciones, generó dolor y lo marcó profundamente. Su posterior tiempo de aislamiento en Córdoba lo llevó a una introspección que, quizás, fue clave para forjar al Papa que conocimos más adelante.
One of the most shocking aspects was learning about a part of Pope Francis' life that I was unaware of: his role during the military dictatorship in Argentina. The film touches with sensitivity the episode in which he was involved in the kidnapping of two Jesuit priests, whose permission to give mass was taken away as a measure to protect them. This decision, although taken with good intentions, generated pain and marked him deeply. His subsequent time of isolation in Cordoba led him to an introspection that, perhaps, was key to forge the Pope we knew later on.
Ver esta película resulta nostálgico si has seguido la vida de alguno de los dos Papas, especialmente ahora que ambos ya no están con nosotros. Pero más allá de la tristeza, también reconforta. Nos recuerda que la Iglesia, con todos sus aciertos y errores, ha estado en manos de hombres que, desde su humanidad, buscaron guiar a millones de fieles. Al final, eso es un Papa: un guía, un pastor, y como bien dice el personaje del Papa Francisco en la película, un mártir que, como Jesús, carga su cruz.
Watching this film is nostalgic if you have followed the life of either of the two Popes, especially now that both are no longer with us. But beyond the sadness, it is also comforting. It reminds us that the Church, with all its successes and mistakes, has been in the hands of men who, from their humanity, sought to guide millions of the faithful. In the end, that is what a Pope is: a guide, a pastor, and as the character of Pope Francis in the film says, a martyr who, like Jesus, carries his cross.
A esta película, por lo sobria, íntima, bien interpretada y reflexiva, le doy un 8.5/10.
Si tienes el corazón abierto y quieres entender más sobre los matices del liderazgo espiritual, Los Dos Papas es una obra que no puedes dejar pasar.
I give this film a 8.5/10 for being sober, intimate, well acted and thoughtful.
