Whispers of the Heart is a Japanese animated coming-of-age romantic drama film with a bit of fantasy added to it. It’s almost fairytale-like! This is written by Hayao Miyazaki with the directorial of Yoshifumi Kondo, under Studio Ghibli.

The story centers on a 14-year-old Junior High School student named Shizuku Tsukishima. Shizuku loves to read books, and that is why she is always in the library. She is also passionate about creative writing.

She even enjoys writing songs. She had fun recreating the lyrics of some songs, like this very famous song, "Country Road", she playfully changed it into "Concrete Road", the lyrics of which describe the Tama New Town, the setting of this film.

That was really so fun listening to her revival of the song together with her classmates. Then one night, as she looks through the checkout cards of the books she borrowed from the library, she discovered that they were all checked out previously by a certain person named Seiji Amasawa. Shizuku wanted to find this mystery boy, and she told her very supportive and loyal best friend, Yuko Harada, about it.

Over the next few days, she runs into a boy who teased her about the song Concrete Road, and she was so annoyed with it.

On another occasion, Shizuku encountered a chubby and cute cat on the train, and she was interested in following the cat and which led her to an antique shop and happened to meet granda Shiro Nishi and the antique doll cat or statue Baron.

Then a few days later, Shizuku encounters the boy again at the antique shop when she went back there and eventually befriended him. And from here on, their friendship develops into something.

This film is yet again a masterpiece from Studio Ghibli. A lighthearted but heartwarming. Their promising romance is so pure and innocent, but it has depth in it.

I love all the scenes of this movie. The soundtracks are great, the settings, and the cinematography were amazing. All the characters are likeable.

But the scenes that I like the most are when Shizuku sings Country Road while Seiji's playing the violin, and later on, the grandpas sing along with them. Another scene is from the school rooftop when Seiji reveal something to Shizuku, some kind of admitting his admiration for Shizuku's talent and that he had been purposely checking a ton of books in the hope that Shizuku would eventually notice him.

This was really touching. The scene with Shizuku and grandpa reading her story, and when grandpa shares his personal love story and Baron's story too. That was really heartwarming, and the scene when Seiji came back home from Cremona, Italy and invited Shizuki to ride his bike and went to watch the sunrise from the hillside and make a heartfelt promise in that place. πŸ₯°
