Our times - 2025 Review

(still from the movie.)

Our times is a timetravel story with a nice dose of comedy that follows a couple Nora and Hector as they travel from 1966 to 2025. The movie begins with Nora nd Hector, showing Nora’s struggles as a brilliant and deterimned acedemic women in 1966, and Hector being loving but spineless. They have built a time travel machine, and that a wormhole allows time travel every 30 years when the planets align. They mean to test it by goign 15 minutes in the futue but end up 60 years ahead instead.

The story then focuses on their reactions to the differences, the fact there are condoms for sale in public, that women can go around without a man, and a host of other things. It’s cute, it’s funny, it’s also very much political. Showing that things have gotten better. There are a lot of great moments, and overall I enjoyed watching it. Just not enough that’d I’d recommend it highly or rewatch it. It has around a 5-5.5 star review on both rotten tomatoes and IMBD and while that seems a bit harsh, it isn't entirely unreasonable. If like me, you are drawn to all things time travel, the movie is on netflicks.

I loved Nora’s character. She smart, funny, and how she grows as she embraces the future was amazing to watch. The actor did such a good job as well. Everything from the way she talks to her shoulders hunching or her stance being more open. She is thriving and embraced by others in the era, both students she taught, and the decedents of her sister.

Hector on the other hand becomes a caricature of fragile masculinity. He tries to make Nora small at every turn. When she wears modern clothes(aka pants) he firsts says she’s not modest, then that he can’t see her as anything but dressed as a man. When Nora is asked to speak at a woman’s day even he tries to steal the stage and gives a cringest fest of a speech that well, essentially tells women to stay small. He interrupts Nora’s speech and when she finally tells him to step down he storms out. He then gets drunk with a bunch of sexist dudes who blame women for their own failures and he joins them. And it only gets worse from there.

In short, when Hector is taken out of the time when he’s successful, when his amazing wife is smaller because the world won’t let her be big, he is loving. He supports her but only as long as it doesn’t cost him. And for the time, that’s about the best she could have found. A guy who was smart, nice, funny, and didn’t resent her for having a carrer, and also didn’t want children.

In the background to this relationship drama is the need to fix the time travel machine. Eventually they realize that somehow the internet is messing up something so they build signal inhibitors which fix the problem. But a new problem arises. Nora doesn’t want to go back. She could have a life in the present. The Dean(one of her former students) is offering her an amazing position. A position she wouldn’t have a chance to reach in her own time. Hector wants to go back because he doesn't fit in the current time, and has already been kind blacklisted for saying shitty stuff online and refusing to acknowledge that what he said was shitty.

In the end Hector takes the machine to the past, leaving a note for Nora saying he didn’t want to hold her back. Then we get a montage of Nora thriving in her own time. She’s giving speechs, winning prizes, publishing books, everything someone with academic aspirations could dream of. Then after 30 years and as an old women, she travels back, and reunite with hector.

Personally, that last bit was stupid to me. Hector sucked. He was a mediocre man, who would rather leave the women he loves than adapt to the current time ran away. It took him less then a week to develop a victim complex. He also said some really horrible things to Nora, told her she should be grateful he helped her at all, instead of realizing the only reason he wasn't her assistant was due to the time they were in.

Instead of even trying, he left knowing he would likely never see her again. And this was played up as being so sad for Nora. That she held onto their love for 30 years. But how could I think that was beautiful when Hector was such a mediocre person? How could I think her going back to a guy who wanted her to be small was a good thing?

The movie was a different feeling then most time travel stories. There was very little discussion of paradoxes and such.

Anyway, enough from me, whats your favorite time travel flick?
