When Evil Lurks was a pleasant surprise for me. I watched it with low expectations, as I tend to underestimate Argentine cinema. Upon finishing it, I was left with a good impression. I was captivated by the landscapes, the story, the grotesque images, and the characters. Coming from a not-so-large town, I could also feel a closer connection, with the idea of "What would I do in that situation?" lingering in my mind. Unconsciously, the movie reached its conclusion; at first, it seemed short, but upon reflection, I believe it has the right duration. If it had been longer, it might have felt heavy, diluting the shocking factor. Conversely, if it had been shorter, it would have felt rushed.

Cuando Acecha la Maldad fue una grata sorpresa para mí, la vi con bajas expectativas, ya que tiendo a subestimar el cine de mi país (Argentina). Al terminarla, me dejó con un buen sabor de boca.
Me dejé llevar por los paisajes, la historia, las imágenes grotescas y sus personajes. Viniendo de un pueblo no muy grande, también pude sentirlo más cercano, con la idea de "¿Qué haría en esa situación?" rondando en mi cabeza. Sin darme cuenta, la película llegó a su fin; en su momento me pareció corta, pero pensándolo bien, creo que tiene la duración correcta. Si se hubiese alargado más, me hubiera parecido pesada, ya que el factor shockeante se hubiera diluido. Y de ser más corta, hubiera quedado demasiado apresurada.

Visuals:

I find it visually appealing in its rawness, standing out as the film progresses from clear to increasingly dark, following the movie's tone. Unexpected moments and anticipated scares still manage to shock those who watch, going beyond the regular jump scare. Despite that, there are specific moments that I feel don't quite work or take me out of the film, but they are very few. It effortlessly generates moments and images that linger in your mind. I appreciate that, in cinema (not just in Argentina), there is sometimes fear of showing very strong images, but they did not hesitate with such scenes, which is commendable.

Visuales:
Me parece visualmente atractiva en su crudeza, siendo el punto en el que más destaca, empezando clara y tornándose cada vez más oscura, siguiendo el tono de la película. Con momentos inesperados que funcionan y sustos anticipados que, aún así, logran un shock en aquellos que los ven, yendo más allá del susto regular de turno. A pesar de eso, tiene momentos puntuales que siento que no funcionan del todo o que me sacaron un poco de la película pero son muy poco. Genera sin problema ese tipo de momentos e imágenes que se quedan en tu cabeza. Destacó que en el cine (ya no solo argentino) a veces se tiene miedo de mostrar algunas imágenes muy fuertes, pero se ve que no les tembló el pulso con este tipo de escenas, lo cual se agradece.

Performance:

The performances, for the most part, are solid. I completely buy into Ezequiel Rodríguez's role as the desperate father, and I applaud Emilio Vodanovich's performance, who, at 17, delivers one of the best moments in the movie. Perhaps one of the characters that doesn't convince me as much is Silvina Sabater, who, despite delivering a performance at the same level, feels like she's placed in the role of a stereotypical character who makes mistakes she shouldn't be making, based on how she was presented. It feels like she's there solely to explain things to the audience rather than being just another character.

Actuación:
Las actuaciones, en su mayoría cumplen. Compro totalmente el papel de padre desesperado de Ezequiel Rodríguez y destaco la actuación de Emilio Vodanovich, quien, con 17 años, dio uno de los mejores momentos de la película.
Quizás uno de los personajes que menos me convence es el de Silvina Sabater, que a pesar de entregar una actuación al nivel, creo que el guión la coloca en el papel de un personaje estereotipado que comete errores que no debería por cómo se nos presentó, sintiéndose como que está solo para explicar cosas al espectador en vez de ser un personaje más.

Script:

The script is perhaps where it doesn't shine as much (not that it's bad, just that other aspects shine more), dipping a bit in the final stretches and conflicting with itself on more than one occasion, with characters making decisions that seem strange from our perspective. It's not a script with extravagant twists or anything extremely complex, but it takes the trouble to create its own folklore and rules (which it breaks at times). However, the apparent simplicity of the script is appreciated; not everything has to be complex and heavy. In its simplicity, it complements and allows other parts of the movie to shine. Let's say the script is simply functional. However, I want to highlight its pace in this regard; at the beginning, it feels a bit slow, struggling to start, but once it does, it's non-stop, almost without breaks, from one memorable moment to another.

Guión:
El punto en el que quizás no destaca tanto es el guión (No es malo, solo que los otros apartados brillan más), decayendo un poco en los tramos finales y chocando consigo mismo en más de una ocasión, o con los personajes tomando decisiones que desde nuestro punto de vista se ven extrañas. No es un guión con giros desmesurados ni nada extremadamente complejo, pero se toma la molestia de crear su propio folklore y reglas (que romperá en algunos momentos). Pero la aparente simpleza del guión se agradece, no todo tiene que ser guiones complejos y pesados, sino que en su simpleza acompaña y deja brillar otras partes de la película. Digamos que el guión es simplemente cumplidor.
Pero me gustaría destacar en este apartado su ritmo, que al comienzo se siente un poco pausado, como que le cuesta arrancar, pero una vez que lo hace, es un no parar, casi sin descansos de momento memorable tras momento memorable.

“When Evil Lurks” is an Argentine film with foreign financing, written and directed by Demián Rugna, who is gradually earning a place among directors in the horror genre worth paying attention to, a director I've had an eye on since Terrified (2017).

It broke all the records it could, becoming the most-watched Argentine horror film, with a nomination for Best Film at the Fantasy Fest and winning Best Film at the Sitges Film Festival, the first time this award has been given to a Latin American film.

It's still in theaters, and I believe it's already on the Shudder platform.

Cuando Acecha la Maldad es una película argentina con financiamiento extranjero, escrita y dirigida por Demián Rugna, quien poco a poco se está ganando un lugar entre los directores de terror a los que prestar atención, y a quien ya tenía un ojo encima desde Aterrados (2017).

Rompió todos los récords que podía, siendo la película argentina de terror más vista, con una nominación a mejor película en el Fantasy Fest y la ganadora del Festival de Cine de Sitges a mejor película, siendo la primera vez que este premio se otorga a una película latinoamericana.
Sigue en cines, y creo que ya se encuentra en la plataforma Shudder.

Conclusion:

It's an entertaining and brutal film for those with strong stomachs, likely not to disappoint any horror lover who watches it. It's a breath of fresh air in its cinematography, genre-blending, violent pace, and easily digestible script. It may be a straightforward film for some, but it's entirely functional.

Es una película entretenida y brutal para estómagos fuertes, que no creo que decepcione a ningún amante del terror que la vea. Siendo una bocanada de aire en su cinematografía, su mezcla de géneros, su ritmo violento y su guión digerible fácilmente. Es una película sencilla quizás para algunos pero totalmente funcional.
