[PL / ENG] Heweliusz [2025]

Słynny netflixowy serial Heweliusz opowiada o katastrofie promu Jan Heweliusz, do której doszło 14 stycznia 1993 roku. Była ona wynikiem splotu wielu niefortunnych czynników – tragedia była efektem błędów konstrukcyjnych, zaniedbań armatora, błędów załogi oraz ekstremalnych warunków pogodowych. Serial przedstawia jednak przede wszystkim ponury obraz rzeczywistości polskiej władzy, która o spowodowanie katastrofy uporczywie obwiniała kapitana statku. Dopiero w 2005 roku Europejski Trybunał Praw Człowieka w Strasburgu uznał, że procesy w Polsce nie były rzetelne, a winę ponosi również armator (firma Euroafrica) oraz instytucje nadzorujące stan techniczny statku.

The famous Netflix series "Heweliusz" tells the story of the Jan Heweliusz ferry disaster, which occurred on January 14, 1993. It was the result of a combination of many unfortunate factors – the tragedy was the result of design flaws, the shipowner's negligence, crew errors, and extreme weather conditions. Above all, however, the series presents a grim picture of the reality of the Polish authorities, who persistently blamed the ship's captain for the disaster. It wasn't until 2005 that the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg ruled that the trials in Poland were unfair, and that the shipowner (Euroafrica) and the institutions supervising the ship's technical condition were also to blame.

Serial zgarnął doskonałe noty, a Jan Holoubek słowa zachwytu i uznania. I ja sama też przyczepić się nie mogę, choć nie ukrywam: porównywane seriale "Wielka Woda" czy "Czarnobyl" jakoś urzekły mnie bardziej. "Heweliusz" jest ciemny i mroczny, obraz jest jakiś taki nieprzychylny mi, ale doskonale oddaje charakter epoki i wydarzeń, które opisuje. Naprawdę, do kwestii technicznej ani artystycznej nie mam prawa się tu nigdzie przyczepić. Zapewne więc zaszwankowało to, co ostatnio np. przy Twin Peaks. Próbowałam mianowicie i oglądać, i robić coś innego, a to wybitnie mi nie wychodzi. Tak więc serialowi daję piąteczkę, mimo iż nie porwał mnie aż tak, jak mogłabym sobie tego oczekiwać.

The series received excellent reviews, and Jan Holoubek expressed his admiration and praise. I can't find fault with it myself, though I admit: I was more captivated by the series I compared, "Wielka Woda" (Big Water) or "Chernobyl." "Heweliusz" is dark and gloomy, the visuals are somewhat unfavorable to me, but it perfectly captures the character of the era and the events it depicts. Honestly, I have no right to criticize anything here, whether technically or artistically. So, it's probably the recent experience with, say, Twin Peaks that faltered. I tried to watch and do something else, and neither of those things worked out for me. So, I give the series a high five, even though it didn't captivate me as much as I might have hoped.
