Hola cinéfilos, al fin me tomé el tiempo de ver pelis y créanme que tengo muchas reseñas pendientes (muchas) Pero bueno quiero hablarles de esta en especiífico: ELVIS. Me parece muy interesante el contraste entre las dos cintas de corte biográficas Blonde y Elvis, claro que hay mucha ficción en ambas. Pero no dejan de exponer la vida de iconos en el cine y la música como lo son Marilyn Monroe y Elvis. Pero centrémonos en este último, aunque aclaro que seguiré lanzando algunas comparaciones interesantes.
Hello cinephiles, I finally took the time to watch movies and believe me I have a lot of reviews pending (a lot) but I want to talk to you about this one in particular: ELVIS. I find very interesting the contrast between the two biographical films Blonde and Elvis, of course there is a lot of fiction in both of them. But they do not fail to expose the life of icons in film and music such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis. But let's focus on the latter, although I will continue to make some interesting comparisons.

Elvis es una película de corte biográfica que nos paseará por los momentos más glamurosos, extravagantes y al mismo tiempo escabrosos de la vida y del ascenso del rey del Rock and Roll: Elvis Presley. Una aventura agridulce que nos adentrará en el mundo de luces del icono de la música. La obra cinematográfica a cargo de Baz Luhrmann nos cambiará la perspectiva sobre las cintas biográficas, que siempre han tenido un tinte histórico y lúgubre. Pero que en esta ocasión, veremos una obra maestra llena de luces y energía. Y así como veremos el ascenso del Rey también veremos la caída. La cinta está protagonizada por Austin Butler y su caracterización ha sido brutalmente impresionante. Pero como en toda historia hay un villano interpretado en esta ocasión por el actor Tom Hanks, la historia de Elvis no es narrada por el cantante, sino por su manager El Coronel Tom Parker.

Si algo me llamó la atención de entrada, fue la preciosa intro de Warner, llena de brillo, oro y detalles como si fuesen diamante. Con esta intro se manifiesta todo el glamour del Rey. Pero al mismo tiempo, la música alude a la nostalgia. La estética en este film será definitiva en nuestra percepción de la vida del Rey, y desde antes de ver la peli, ya nos deja ver con este opening que en si misma es una joya.
If anything caught my attention right off the bat, it was Warner's gorgeous intro, full of glitter, gold and diamond-like details. With this intro, all the glamour of the King is manifested. But at the same time, the music alludes to nostalgia. The aesthetics in this film will be definitive in our perception of the King's life, and even before watching the movie, we can already see with this opening that in itself is a jewel.

La película de Elvis está cargada de simbolismos, llena de mucho color y luces de neón importantes en la época, en el margen de los 40's y los 70's. La estética de este film como lo dije antes cobra una relevancia única en la historia ya que estamos viendo la narración desde el punto de vista del coronel Parker, y desde ese punto de vista, la vida de Elvis parecía bañada en oro. Contratos, reconocimientos, éxito y por supuesto el furor de Las Vegas tendrá un papel importante también.

The Elvis film is loaded with symbolism, filled with lots of color and neon lights important at the time, on the fringe of the 40's and 70's. The aesthetics of this film as I said before takes on a unique relevance in the story since we are seeing the narration from the point of view of Colonel Parker, and from that point of view, Elvis' life seemed bathed in gold. Por eso la fotografía en la peli es un recurso de la narrativa también. Es de hecho, hipnotizante la cantidad de imágenes superpuestas, cada una con la saturación alta.

Hablar de personajes es hablar de Elvis a través de la piel de Austin Butler, yo quedé impresionadísima con su actuación. El carisma único y la energía de cada escena. Ver a este actor brillar luego de una carrera en silencio, es haber visto su madurez como actor. El desafío que tuvo que enfrentar quizás no fue fácil, y mucho menos las expectativas sobre su papel. Pero hizo un trabajo magistral.
Talking about characters is talking about Elvis through the skin of Austin Butler, I was very impressed with his performance. The unique charisma and energy in every scene. To see this actor shine after a silent career is to have seen his maturity as an actor. The challenge he faced may not have been easy, let alone the expectations of his role. But he did a masterful job.
Por otra parte, está el Coronel Parker, el narrador de la historia de Elvis y quien cree tener todos los créditos de su éxito. Es un personaje que desde el principio te da mala espina y nos centramos en la interacción de Elvis con él, esperando que el Rey se de cuenta de quién es su mano derecha. No les doy spoiler de la historia, solo les pongo de sobreaviso lo que veremos apenas iniciamos la película. Ton Hanks es totalmente desagradable en pantalla. Nada más con ver al Coronel Parker nos cae pesado y no es por el peso específicamente. Pero como toda buena historia, tenemos que ver la evolución de los personajes. Sin embargo, no dejamos de esperar a que Elvis se de cuenta.
On the other hand, there is Colonel Parker, the narrator of Elvis' story and the one who believes he has all the credits for his success. He's a character who gives you a bad feeling from the beginning and we focus on Elvis' interaction with him, hoping that the King realizes who his right hand man is. I'm not giving you spoilers for the story, just giving you a heads up on what we'll see as soon as we start the movie. Ton Hanks is totally unpleasant on screen. Just looking at Colonel Parker is enough to make him a pain in the ass, and it's not because of his weight specifically. But like any good story, we have to see the evolution of the characters. However, we keep waiting for Elvis to figure it out.
ESPECTÁCULO | SHOW
Hay algo que me llamó la atención de la cinta y a la que no le pude dar otro nombre que: espectáculo. Y es que para Parker la vida parecía eso, un show infinito. Y por eso mencioné antes la estética como un recurso narrativo. No estamos viendo la vida de Elvis, sino la vida de Elvis como un espectáculo, un show más dirigido por el Coronel. El nos cuenta la historia y hasta los momentos más álgidos de Elvis, tienen un tinte pintoresco. Siendo Parker el que salva el día. Todos los pasos de Elvis debían ser acordes al criterio del manager. Y de cierta manera podemos ver la imagen cirquense de un gran elefante manejado por un naire.
There is something that caught my attention in the film and I couldn't give it any other name than: spectacle. For Parker, life seemed to be just that, an infinite show. And that's why I mentioned before the aesthetics as a narrative resource. We are not seeing the life of Elvis, but the life of Elvis as a spectacle, another show directed by the Colonel. And in a way we can see the circus image of a big elephant driven by a naire.
En este espectáculo, Elvis era solo eso, un personaje más. Y uno creería que el Rey del Rock and Roll nos hechizaría eternamente con su música. Como sucede en el Circo, todo brilla y se ve alucinante. Pero detrás de bambalinas se descoce la vida de quienes dan su mejor sonrisa al público. Yo disfruté mucho el filme, muchísimo, ver a Butler encarnando al Rey fue fascinante. Pero cuando estas arriba de una Noria todo se ve fascinante hasta que te toca bajar. Y eso se vivió a mil en la peli. El espectáculo no acaba, hasta que acaba.
In this show, Elvis was just that, another character. And you would think that the King of Rock and Roll would cast an eternal spell on us with his music. As in the Circus, everything sparkles and looks amazing. But behind the scenes, the lives of those who give their best smile to the audience are unraveling. CULTURE
Hay algo interesante que rescatar de la película y es el drama alrededor del Rey, a quien han criticado por "apropiación cultural" en diferentes ocasiones. Yo de hecho conocí a Elvis como un artista que cimentó su obra apartir del trabajo de otros. Y la cinta de Luhrmann hace un guiño sutil sobre este tema. Realmente fue grato verlo en la pantalla. No les contaré más sobre esto, pero la mezcla cultural a la que fue sometido Elvis es relevante en el éxito de su carrera.
There is something interesting to take away from the film and that is the drama surrounding the King, who has been criticized for "cultural appropriation" on several occasions. I actually knew Elvis as an artist who built his work from the work of others. And Luhrmann's film makes a subtle nod to this theme. It was really nice to see it on the screen. I won't tell you more about it, but the cultural mix Elvis was subjected to is relevant to the success of his career.
Creo que la producción se esmeró en unir las culturas americanas a través de la historia de un icono que generó mucho ardor en una parte de la población estadounidense. Esto es lo bonito del entretenimiento, que da paso a la reflexión y a encuentros. Yo disfruté muchísimo del soundtrack, con ritmos afro, blues, country, y Gospel, con arreglos modernos, realmente es un toque interesante de la peli. Asimismo sucede con la música de Elvis, que fue adaptada para la cinta.
I think the production took great pains to unite American cultures through the story of an icon that generated a lot of ardor in a part of the American population. That's the beauty of entertainment, it gives way to reflection and encounters. I really enjoyed the soundtrack, with Afro, blues, country, and Gospel rhythms, with modern arrangements, it is really an interesting touch to the movie.
LO MALO | THE BAD
Ahora hablar del aspecto negativo de la obra será fácil y directo al grano. No es una cinta que recoge toda la vida de Elvis, de cierta manera vuelve a glorificar al Rey del Rock and Roll y victimiza muchos aspectos de su vida. Así que hay que recordar que hay mucha ficción de por medio. Solo eso puedo decir en el aspecto negativo. Pero bueno, hay que recordar que es el Coronel el encargado de contarnos el espectáculo de Elvis.
Ahora hablar del aspecto negativo de la obra será fácil y directo al grano. No es una cinta que recoge toda la vida de Elvis, de cierta manera vuelve a glorificar al Rey del Rock and Roll y victimiza muchos aspectos de su vida. Así que hay que recordar que hay mucha ficción de por medio. Solo eso puedo decir en el aspecto negativo. Pero bueno, hay que recordar que es el Coronel el encargado de contarnos el espectáculo de Elvis.
BLONDE VS ELVIS
Quiero hacer un pequeño paréntesis para comparar las dos cintas biográficas del año: Blonde y Elvis, es increíble el encuentro de dos iconos de la cultura pop en las carteleras. Y me pareció fascinante hacer esta comparación. Sobretodo por el tono de las producciones. Ambas nos muestran la caída de los idolos. Pero la narrativa es completamente diferente, siendo Elvis mucho más digerible y rápida. Recuerdo que estaba evadiendo un poco la cinta porque pensé que al ser de carácter biográfica y de drama, se ralentizaría la historia. Y se haría pesada. No digo que Blonde sea pesada de ver sino que en algunos momentos, se hizo eterna la historia en pantalla. Ambas tienen lo suyo, claro que sí. Pero Elvis tiene mucho encanto.
I want to make a small parenthesis to compare the two biographical films of the year: Blonde and Elvis, it is incredible the meeting of two pop culture icons on the billboards. And I found it fascinating to make this comparison. Especially because of the tone of the productions. Both show us the fall of the idols. But the narrative is completely different, with Elvis being much more digestible and fast-paced. I remember that I was avoiding the film a little bit because I thought that being biographical and dramatic, it would slow down the story. And it would become heavy. I'm not saying that Blonde is heavy to watch but at some points, the story took forever on screen. They both have their own thing, of course. But Elvis has a lot of charm.
Podría mencionar aquí también el trato que han recibido las dos obras debido al carácter de la producción. En Blonde vemos la deconstrucción de Marilyn y en Elvis la construcción de un idolo. Pero ambos cayeron estrepitosamente. Y los actores que revivieron a estas estrellas Ana de Armas y Austin Butler han recibido opiniones desiguales. La crítica ha sido visceralmente más dura con Blonde que con Elvis. Pero bueno, todo es parte de este mundo. ¿A ti cuál te gustó más?
I could also mention here the treatment that the two works have received due to the character of the production. In Blonde we see the deconstruction of Marilyn and in Elvis the construction of an idol. But both fell disastrously. And the actors who revived these stars Ana de Armas and Austin Butler have received mixed reviews. Critics have been viscerally harsher on Blonde than on Elvis. But hey, it's all part of this world, which one did you like better?
En conclusión, yo disfruté mucho toda la película. Puedo darle sin miedo 10/10. La volvería ver sin duda alguna. Es una peli que podría volverse de culto para las nuevas generaciones. Un biopic un colorido y dinámico. No pude halgar tanto la escenografía y el vestuario, pero cada uno de estos elementos hacían de la ficción una realidad. Ver vestir a Butler cuero y flequillos como Elvis fue de mis partes favoritas, sin dejar atrás los movimientos prohibidos, claro.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed the whole movie. I can safely give it 10/10. I would definitely watch it again. It is a movie that could become a cult movie for the new generations. A colorful and dynamic biopic. I couldn't praise the scenery and costumes as much, but each of these elements made the fiction a reality. Watching Butler wear leather and bangs like Elvis was one of my favorite parts, not to mention the forbidden moves, of course.

Es una de las tramas que no he visto hasta ahora, la tengo pendiente. Te seré sincero, la he estado evadiendo un poco. Leí algo de eso por acá y creo que resuena. :P Al ser más corta quizás tenga una percepción más compacta. Llama la atención que al tener contenido biográfico tenga elementos poderosos. En el caso de Blonde, es ficción con realidad, después de todo es un Biopic que me encantó.
Tienes que verla, te encantará 😍 es súper dinámica no se te hace pesada la trama ni nada. Realmente vale la pena.

I also loved Blonde, I can't compare them, they are very different productions and the directors are totally opposite. The director of Blonde is a slow filmmaker, on the other hand Lhurman is a master of spectacle and fast-paced montages, a rhythm that leaves the viewer exhausted. I am a fan of both filmmakers. I knew Marilyn and Elvis would walk the red carpet at every awards ceremony. Blutler won the Bafta for best actor a few days ago. The Oscar is between him and Brendan Fraser.

La vida de Elvis siempre me ha parecido muy interesante, al mejor estilo del Rock & Roll, sus mismos excesos fueron los que acabaron con él, solo hay que observar su sandwich favorito jajaja. Esta película es una de las tantas que tengo en lista por ver, es genial ver qué sigue en boca del público cinéfilo, tengo que hacer un huequito definitivamente. Saludos!

Cuando vi esta película la verdad quedé maravillado por el trabajo de Austin, creo que la personificación fue brutal pero si, estoy de acuerdo que acá lo que vimos es la parte oscura de su vida manejada por el Coronel. Siento que esto es muy común en este tipo de biografías, se enfocan en lo trágico porque supongo que es lo que más vende.
Pero bueno, al final es un film extraordinario que nos habla que toda la fama del mundo no es suficiente para ser feliz y más si tienes a un manager que solo piensa en si mismo. Butler puede llevarse el Oscar, cuidado con eso. No creo que pase pero en la pelea seguro está.

Cuando leo una reseña y no hallo rastros de spoilers (como es debido, desde mi óptica) me fascino. Siempre he sido algo reticente con Elvis, tanto por su música como por su figura. No obstante, considero que tú, @audiarmisg, has hecho un trabajo encomiable con tus descripciones, apreciaciones y pareceres. Una excelente pieza de crítica cinematográfica. Muy buen trabajo, amiga.
Una gran película sin duda alguna y una maravillosa actuación. Si bien Butler ganó el Globo de Oro, anoche vi The Whale y lo de Brendan Fraser es icreíble también, así que no sé.
Es cierto lo que mencionas sobre la vida de Elvis como espectáculo, ese fue el enfoque de la película y en cuanto al coronel Parker, la verdad no me gustó ese personaje. Es decir, más allá de que sea despreciable lo encontré muy caricaturesco y el recurso de emplearlo como narrador no lo disfruté realmente.
Si quieres ver una historia de ídolos caídos, te recomiendo Babylon. Es escandalosa y escatológica, pero es una gran película también.
