Hello friends, today is Movie Wednesday and I'm bringing you a review of The Gardener, an original Netflix series that left me absolutely stunned—as the Spaniards would say, "flipando." So sit back and enjoy this read.

SYNOPSIS:

This is a psychological thriller-style miniseries starring Álvaro Rico, who plays Elmer—a character you might recognize from Élite. The co-star is Cecilia Suárez, who portrays La China Jurado; you may know her from The House of Flowers, and she was actually the reason I decided to watch the series. We also have Catalina Sopelana as Violeta Álvarez, an actress I hadn’t seen in any other production.

Now that we’ve got the cast sorted out, let’s dive in. The Gardener has a rather unconventional premise. Elmer is a very dedicated gardener who lives with his mother, China Jurado. Together they share a routine completely centered around their garden. But beneath this serene exterior lies a far more profitable business: making certain people disappear from the face of the earth.

However, Elmer isn’t just a hitman who blindly follows orders—he’s a man with a psychological condition that makes him perfect for the role his mother has carved out for him. Elmer has alexithymia, a neurological trait that prevents him from feeling empathy, understanding others' emotions, or even experiencing his own. Or at least, that’s how it was—until he’s given a job he can’t go through with: Violeta.

Elmer’s bond with Violeta completely unravels the facade of his life. Is China Jurado truly a devoted mother, or a greedy woman exploiting her only son as a tool? Can Elmer actually feel real emotions? Will the family's secret side business be exposed?

AESTHETICS

These kinds of elements always catch my attention, and The Gardener makes excellent use of them. The series brilliantly exploits color, wide shots that showcase lush foliage, a forest-like climate, and a cool-toned color palette that elevates the visuals. The production weaves a visually striking narrative worthy of cinema, with meticulous lighting. In this category, I’d say the aesthetic is both refined and top-tier. Thanks to the interplay between carefully crafted shots and the soundtrack, we’re able to grasp Elmer’s emotions—or his lack thereof.

THE STORY

The story is an undeniable hook. It unfolds a bit slowly—almost to the point of frustration—but it's all clearly intentional. Did I mention that Cecilia Suárez has a fan over here? Well, she does. She’s an actress who can either move you deeply or leave you speechless with her seriousness. She plays the perfect antagonist; her slow, deliberate way of speaking adds a whole layer of tension to the plot. Her actions are so cold that you might start to suspect she’s the one with brain damage—not Elmer.

But I do have to point out one weakness in the series: the investigators. I’m going to be very critical here—their storyline feels like unnecessary filler. While we’re eager to follow our favorite characters, these investigators show up as if they’re “trying to do some detective work,” but they’re vague about who they’re even looking for and end up getting tangled in their own subplot. They seem to think they’re smarter than La China Jurado, but they’re really not. I don’t know if it’s the casting that throws me off—two middle-aged officers, one more energetic than the other, chasing some big case that might make their dull routine worthwhile. And honestly, their personal storyline just feels pointless.

VIOLETA ÁLVAREZ

I already have my favorite characters: Elmer and La China. But the real catalyst—the one who turns both of their lives upside down—is the beautiful Violeta Álvarez. At first glance, she seems innocent, with no enemies who’d want her dead. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Violeta is the kind of girl who gets involved with men without ever developing genuine feelings for them—the kind who storms into your life, stirs everything up, and then disappears. Maybe she doesn’t do it intentionally, but that’s her pattern. And just when you start warming up to her chemistry with Elmer—bam!—she starts acting in ways that are hard to understand.

What does Violeta really want? We don’t know. We’re given glimpses into her world, but it remains mostly a mystery. What the ending makes clear, though, is that she was never the innocent dove she appeared to be. And that’s something La China Suárez suspected all along.

CONCLUSION

Setting aside the whole subplot with the police, the series is highly recommended. It has just a few episodes, making it perfect to binge over a weekend. The performances are top-notch, and the production quality rivals that of major franchises. It offers a truly unique story—because Elmer and his mother’s garden hides much more than just secrets.

Hola amigos, hoy es miércoles de movies y les traigo la reseña de El Jardinero una serie original de Netflix que me dejó flipando como dicen los españoles. Así que pónganse cómodos para esta lectura.

SINOPSIS:

Esta es una miniserie estilo thriller psicológico protagonizada por Álvaro Rico, quien le da vida a Elmer y a quien conocemos de Élite, como co-protagonista está Cecilia Suárez quien le da vida a La China Jurado, a quien conocemos de La Casa de las Flores y por quien me animé a ver la serie. Además contamos con Catalina Sopelana como Violeta Álvarez, a quien no he visto en ninguna otra trama.

Ya dejando claro quién es quién, les cuento que El Jardinero cuenta con una premisa atípica. Elmer es un jardinero muy dedicado que vive junto a su madre China Jurado, ambos tienen una dinámica familiar en la que todo el tiempo están dedicados al jardín. Pero por debajo de esa fachada hay otro negocio que les genera mucha remuneración: desaparecer de la faz de la tierra a ciertas personas.

Pero el Jardinero Elmer más allá de ser un sicario cualquiera que cumple órdenes, es un sujeto con una condición psicológica que lo hacen perfecto para el puesto que su mamá le ha diseñado. Elmer posee alexitimia, esta rareza neurológica impide que Elmer sienta empatía por los demás, no puede comprender las emociones de los demás y él carece de ellas. O así era hasta que se topa con un encargo que no puede realizar: Violeta.

Esta cercanía entre Elmer y Violeta descose por completo la fachada de su vida. ¿Es China Jurado una abnegada madre o una codiciosa mujer que utiliza a su único hijo como un instrumento? ¿Elmer es capaz de sentir emociones reales? ¿Se descubrirá el segundo negocio familiar?

Estética

Bueno este tipo de aspectos siempre me llaman la atención y en El Jardinero explotan muy bien los colores los planos abiertos donde se puede ver el follaje, un clima boscoso y manteniendo una paleta de tonos fríos que embellecen los cuadros. La producción logra hilar una narrativa visual muy atractiva digna de cine, con una iluminación prolija. En esta categoría puedo decir que es una estética muy atinada y de alto nivel. Gracias al juego de planos hilados con el soundtrack podemos comprender las emociones de Elmer o la carencia de ellas.

LA HISTORIA:

Ok, la historia es un gancho definitivo, tiene un desarrollo un poco lento que llega a desesperarte pero todo es intencional. ¿Les comenté que la actriz Cecilia Suárez tiene una fan por acá? Pues la tiene, es una mujer que puede conmoverte o dejarte sin habla por su seriedad. Es la antagonista perfecta, su forma de hablar pausado genera mucha más tensión a la trama. Sus acciones son tan frías que sospecharías que la que tiene un daño cerebral es ella y no Elmer.

Pero sí debo mencionar que hay una debilidad en la serie: los investigadores. Seré muy crítica, la historia de ellos es simple relleno que no viene al caso. Porque mientras queremos ver a nuestros personajes favoritos, aparecen ellos como "queriendo hacer la pesquiza", no definen bien a quién buscan luego se enrollan entre sí. Y creen ser mucho más inteligentes que La China Jurado, pero nada que ver. No sé qué es lo que no me termina de cuadrar si el cast, unos policías de mediana edad, uno con más energía que el otro que buscan algo grande y relevante que les haga tolerar la rutina. Innecesario la trama personal entre ellos.

VIOLETA ÁLVAREZ

Yo ya tengo a mis personajes favoritos: Elmer y La China. Pero la manzana de la discordia y la que pone la vida de cabeza de ambos es la bella Violeta Álvarez, una chica que parece ser inocente, y no tener enemigos que deseen arrebatarle la vida. Nada más lejos de la realidad. Violeta es la típica chica que se engancha con hombres sin desarrollar sentimientos genuinos hacia ellos, esa chica que llega alborota tu vida y se va. Quizás no lo hace de forma intencional, pero esa es su historia. Y cuando ya empieza a agradarte un poco su interacción con Elmer, ¡zas! actúa de formas poco comprensibles. ¿Qué es lo que quiere Violeta? No lo sabemos, se nos deja entrever su realidad. Sin embargo, el final nos deja claro que nunca fue una inocente paloma. Y eso siempre lo sospechó La China Suárez.

CONCLUSIÓN

Muy aparte de toda la trama de los policías, la serie es recomendadísima, tiene pocos episodios que fácilmente pueden ver en un fin de semana. Las actuaciones están de 10 y la producción no tiene nada que envidiarle a grandes franquicias. Posee una historia bastante diferente porque el Jardín de Elmer y su madre esconde mucho más que secretos. Espero que puedan disfrutarla y si ya lo hicieron me dejan sus comentarios.
