A fisherman without a rod... not Shakespeare.

Some say there's no sadder story in the world than the tale of Romeo and Juliet, but that's only true among those familiar with Shakespeare's work but completely indifferent to fishing.

Holding a fishing rod and waiting for a bite, it's quite pleasant to recall something from Shakespeare or another classic poet or prose writer, but I'm not sure an avid fisherman standing on stage could say the same thing—that playing a role, unless it's the old fisherman from "The Goldfish," and thinking about real fishing is impossible; fishing conquers all.

So, I think the saddest story could be told by a fisherman who hadn't planned to go fishing today, but for some reason ended up on the lake shore, while his fishing rod, meanwhile, was gathering dust in a cramped storage room, far away.

At such moments, such sadness descends upon me that nothing brings me joy, not the beauty of nature, not the opportunity to sit and relax on a park bench... what kind of rest can there be if you've made such a fool of yourself?

The monks who engaged in self-flagellation didn't punish themselves as severely as the fisherman who was left alone by the lake but forgot his fishing rod at home.

But what can one do? Just cast a sad glance at the lake and move on, going about one's business, laughingly recalling the opinion of those who consider Shakespeare the father of melancholy.
