Review of Painkiller: When ambition forgets ethics

Hello dear friends of Movies & TV Shows, it's a pleasure to be here once again. This time I'll be sharing a review of a miniseries that I liked quite a lot. It is not among my favorites, because I think it became somewhat monotonous, but it does address a subject that catches me, and that is the subject of drugs and the pharmaceutical industry.

It has been many years since I decided to stop believing in the magic of pills, basically when I read about the plascebo effect, which is when a sample of people who are going to test the effectiveness of a drug, receive a pill that has no chemical component and still react positively to the "treatment" (the idea is something like that, I am not an expert on the subject, but this proves that the solution is often in the mind and not in what we "put" in the body). I should clarify that I do take ibuprofen for some pains, I say this in case you read it in a future post, heh. It is not a contradiction, but to manage pain with the mind, you need an elaboration and control of certain mechanisms that occur in the mental plane, and I am in the process of developing those skills. Yes, for other conditions, I resort to natural medicine.

The point is that the series "Painkiller" brings us an interesting approach to the massive sale of OxyContin, an opioid that spread throughout much of the United States and the world.

Reseña de Medicina Letal: Cuando la ambición se olvida de la ética

Hola amigos queridos de Movies & TV Shows, es un placer estar por aquí una vez más. En esta oportunidad estaré compartiendo la reseña de una miniserie que me gustó bastante. No está entre mis preferidas, porque creo que se tornó algo monótona, pero sí que aborda una temática que me atrapa, y es el tema de los medicamentos y la industria farmacéutica.

Hace ya bastantes años que decidí dejar de creer en la magia de las píldoras, básicamente cuando leí sobre el efecto plascebo, que es cuando en una muestra de personas que van a probar la eficacia de un medicamento, recibe una pastilla que no tiene ningún componente químico y aún así reaccionan positivamente al “tratamiento” (es algo así la idea, no soy experta en el tema, pero esto prueba que la solución muchas veces está en la mente y no en lo que le “metemos” al cuerpo). Igual aclaro que sí tomo ibuprofeno ante algunos dolores, lo digo por si lo leen en algún post a futuro, je. No es una contradicción, sino que para manejar los dolores con la mente, se necesita una elaboración y control de determinados mecanismos que ocurren en el plano mental, y estoy en el proceso de desarrollar esas habilidades. Sí que para otras afecciones, recurro a medicina natural.

La cuestión es que la serie “Medicina Letal”, nos acerca un abordaje interesante de la venta masiva de OxyContin, un opioide que se expadió por una buena parte del territorio estadounidense y el mundo.

Plot

This series gives us the point of view of the pharmaceutical industry (with a focus on Purdue Pharma which was the major player in the sale of OxyContin), patients and groups that are against oxycodone and other opioids.

It can be observed how the producers (laboratories), some doctors, companies linked to the commercialization of OxyContin, the only thing that matters to them is to make more and more massive the marketing, the production and of course the medical prescription of this medicine.

As it is a drug that acts on pain, many patients began to ask for its prescription, especially those suffering from chronic pain.

The story deals with the case of Glen, a man who, after an accident, finds it difficult even to move, and who, at first, we could say that this drug "saves his life", since it makes his pain practically disappear, and this gives him back the possibility of working and sharing with his family.

However, after a while and after increasing the dosage, Glen BEGINS to experience an addiction to the drug, which even leads him to sell his wedding ring to be able to buy oxycodone.

The drug begins to be marketed outside the medical world, and begins to be "trafficked" by different groups of people suffering from addictions to this and/or other substances and drugs.

Trama

Esta serie nos ofrece el punto de vista de la industria farmacéutica (con foco en Purdue Pharma que fue el actor principal en la venta de OxyContin), de los pacientes y de los grupos que están en contra de la oxicodona y otros opioides.

Se puede observar cómo a los productores (laboratorios), algunos médicos, empresas vinculadas con la comercialización de OxyContin, lo único que les importa es hacer cada vez más masivo el marketing, la producción y por supuesto la prescripción médica de este médicamento.

Como es un fármaco que actúa sobre el dolor, muchos pacientes empezaron a solicitar que se les recetara, en especial aquellos que padecían algún dolor crónico.

La historia aborda el caso de Glen, un hombre que tras un accidente, queda con dificultad incluso para moverse, y a quien al principio, esta droga podríamos decir que “le salva la vida”, pues hace que su dolor prácticamente desaparezca, y eso le devuelve la posibilidad de trabajar y de compartir con su familia.

Sin embargo, tras un tiempo y luego del aumento de la dosis, Glen EMPEZÁ a experimentar una adicción a la droga, que lo conduce incluso a vender su anillo de matrimonio para poder comprar oxicodona.

La droga empieza a comercializarse por fuera del mundo de la medicina, y empieza a “traficarse” por diferentes grupos de personas que padecen adicciones a esta y/u otras sustancias y drogas.

While this is happening, groups that are observing how health has ceased to be a priority to become a gold mine for large sectors of the pharmaceutical industry for the sale of oxycodone, initiate investigations to demonstrate how there is a direct relationship between OxyContin consumption, addiction and death, as many patients have lost their lives due to oxycodone abuse.

Mientras esto ocurre, los grupos que están observando cómo la salud ha dejado de ser una prioridad para pasar a ser una mina de oro para grandes sectores de la industria farmacéutica por la venta de oxicodona, inician investigaciones para poder demostrar cómo hay una relación directa entre el consumo de OxyContin, la adicción y la muerte, pues muchos pacientes perdieron la vida a causa del abuso de oxicodona.

Opinion

I like this topic and I really liked the way the issue was approached. It is important to keep in mind that it is based on a book written by Barry Meier (here you can read more about it), which in turn has its origin in a true story, which is the opioid crisis that was strongly experienced in the United States.

I believe that bringing this story to television reminds us that although drugs can be very useful, not always when a doctor prescribes something, he or she is acting in good faith.

Me gusta este tema y me gustó mucho cómo se abordó la problemática. Es importante tener en cuenta que se basa en un libro escrito por Barry Meier (aquí pueden leer más sobre esto), que a su vez tiene origen en una historia real, que es la crisis de los opiáceos que se vivió con fuerza en Estados Unidos.

Considero que llevar a la televisión esta historia, nos recuerda que aunque los medicamentos pueden ser muy útiles, no siempre que un médico recete algo, va a estar actuando de buena fe.

It is not a matter of always being suspicious when one goes to a doctor, but I do think it is good to ask oneself if that medicine is really the solution, because there are drugs that seem to come to change our lives, and they can really do it for a while, but the side effects could be devastating, and this is something that only the patients who take the drug can report.

The pharmaceutical industry exists and there are laboratories, which, in other words, means that there are people who market remedies to make more and more money. In fact, this sector occupies the top 5 of the largest industries, as you can see in insidermonkey.com.

On the other hand, I am a big fan of actor Matthew Broderick and it had been quite a while since I had seen a production with him, so I really enjoyed this series.

No se trata de andar desconfiando siempre que uno va a un médico, pero sí creo que es bueno preguntarse si ese medicamente es realmente la solución, pues hay drogas que parecen venir a cambiarnos la vida, y realmente pueden hacerlo por un tiempo, pero los efectos secundarios, podrían ser devastadores, y esto es algo que solamente los pacientes que consumen la droga, pueden informar.

La industria farmacéutica existe y existen los laboratorios, esto, en otras palabras, se traduce en que existe gente que comercializa remedios para ganar más y más dinero. De hecho, este sector ocupa el top 5 de las industrias más grandes, como pueden ver en insidermonkey.com.

Por otro lado, soy una gran seguidora del actor Matthew Broderick y hacía bastante que no veía una producción con él, por lo que disfruté mucho esta serie.
