3 Horror Shorts that are among my favourites
Surfing youtube I found very good contributions to the art of cinema, I mean short horror films that usually are made by film students, just today I found 3 that I want to share with you. Hello, people of the internet! I'm Bethy Jade and these are my favourites for the moment in short horror films.
Navegando por youtube encontré muy buenos aportes al arte del cine, me refiero a cortos de terror que por lo general, hacen estudiantes de cine, justamente hoy encontré 3 que quiero compartir con ustedes. ¡Hola, gente de Internet! soy Bethy Jade y estos son mis preferidos por el momento en cortos de terror.

I'll start by talking about the one that for me is the least scary. La voz de Mamá is an Argentinean short film, directed by Mariano Cattaneo, it is only 5 minutes long and condenses the whole story with a very good narrative structure, even with few dialogues, it is much more visual, it keeps us on alert and also makes the spectator speculate about what is happening (it develops intrigue).
Empezaré hablando de la que para mi es la que menos causa temor. La voz de Mamá es un corto argentino, dirigido por Mariano Cattaneo, tiene una duración apenas de 5 minutos y condensa toda la historia con una muy buena estructura narrativa, aun con pocos dialogos, es mucho más visual, nos mantiene en alerta y además también hace que el espectador especule acerca de lo que esta pasando (desarrolla intriga)
A girl sings softly and hears a woman's voice saying "let's play" as she turns around, the swing next to her rocks by itself, so we know there is something wrong with the woman's voice. However, as the story progresses, it veers off to one side and when we least expect it, there is a plot twist with the rather terrifying ending. I must admit that the ending is to be expected but I appreciate the fact that the screenwriters made a very good effort to disengage the viewer from this idea.
El inicio ya nos planta la expectativa e intriga, una niña canta suavemente y oye la voz de una mujer que le dice "vamos a jugar" al volverse, el columpio que está junto a ella se mece solo, así que sabemos que hay algo mal con la voz de esa mujer. Sin embargo, a medida que avanza la historia, esta se va encaminando hacia un lado y cuando menos lo esperamos, hay un giro de trama con el final bastante aterrador. Debo admitir que el final es esperable pero rescato el hecho de que los guionistas hicieron un muy buen esfuerzo por desligar al espectador de esta idea.
It has interesting shots, the ascending ones being my favourite, as they emphasise the object of the terror (in this case, the house) and there is also a good use of light and shadow, making them part of the terror (like the shadow of Belén's mother on the wall). It is a shot that James Wang also used in Insidious, and which is a simple but effective resource: here is an example of what I'm talking about.
Tiene planos interesantes, siendo los ascendentes mis preferidos ya que enfatizan el objeto del terror (en este caso, la casa) además también hay un buen planteo de las luces y las sombras, haciéndolas participes del terror (como la sombra de la madre de Belén en la pared) es un plano que también usó James Wang en Insidious, y el cuál es un recurso simple pero efectivo: aquí un ejemplo de lo que hablo.
The performances are basic but they do the job (I've seen much worse) and the music was also very appropriate and accompanied the film work well.
Las actuaciones son básicas pero cumplen el cometido (he visto mucho peores) y la musicalización también estuvo muy acorde y acompañó bien al trabajo fílmico.

This one is a bit old, but still good. It's by David Sandberg and Lotta Losten. Its premise is extremely simple and in fact has no dialogue, the best and most surprising thing about this one specifically is the handling of the horror.
Este es un poco viejo, sin embargo no deja de ser bueno. Es de la mano de David Sandberg y Lotta Losten. Su premisa es extremadamente simple y de hecho no tiene dialogos, lo mejor y más sorprendente en este específicamente es el manejo del terror.
The premise is simple: a woman is getting ready for bed and when she turns off the light in the hallway of her house, she realises that she is not alone. If she turns on the light "it" disappears, if she turns it off, it reappears. It's quite simple but the way the horror is handled is great. The focal point is the sound, when the protagonist turns on and off the switch, besides scaring us with what we see, we keep in our subconscious the sound it makes, so later we are scared to hear it even if we do not see anything (everything is narrated from the point of view of the protagonist) also, there is a very present silence that when it is broken by a sound, generates discomfort .
La premisa es sencilla: una mujer se prepara para dormir y cuando apaga la luz del pasillo de su casa, se da cuenta que no esta sola. Si enciende la luz "eso" desaparece, si la apaga reaparece. Es bastante simple pero la forma en como manejan el terror es buenísima. El punto focal es el sonido, cuando la protagonista enciende y apaga el interruptor, además de asustarnos con lo que vemos, guardamos en el subconsciente el sonido que hace este, así más adelante nos asusta escucharlo aunque no veamos nada (todo está narrado desde el punto de vista de la protagonista) asimismo, hay un silencio muy presente que cuando se ve roto por algún sonido, genera malestar e incomodidad.
The shots are quite simple, and the lights and shadows are the protagonists, there is a good use of these elements, I recommend them to you.
Los planos son bastante simples, y son las luces y sombras las protagonistas, hay una buena utilización de estos elementos, se los recomiendo.
𝐋𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐣𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐧𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞 / 𝐒𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧😥💀👻
This production is directed by Alex Magaña and is based on the legend of the smiling woman in the Mexico City underground. In this short film we see it reflected in a train station.
Esta producción está dirigida por Alex Magaña y está basado en la leyenda de la mujer sonriente en el metro de la Ciudad de México. En este corto lo vemos reflejado en una estación de trenes.
The shots are very linear and static, but that's what they want to achieve, with simple panoramic shots with different distances you can achieve a lot, in this case the city is used in the early hours of the morning (empty) to generate terror, the staging is very well lit, this filmic work doesn't need darkness to generate terror, it specialises or takes emphasis on the bizarre, very Asian style.
Los planos son muy lineales y estáticos, pero es lo que se quiere lograr, con simples planos panorámicos con diferentes distancias se logra bastante, en este caso se usa a la urbe en horas de la madrugada (vacía) para generar terror, la puesta en escena está muy bien iluminada, este trabajo fílmico no necesita a la oscuridad para generar terror, se especializa o toma énfasis en lo bizarro, muy al estilo asiático.
I quite liked the characterisation of the spectre, apparently she looks normal but her sinister smile generates too much discomfort, we also see her barefoot and with one sleeve of her dress on wrong, which makes me think of a more terrifying and profound context: could it be that at that hour of the morning she has been abused and killed? And the make-up of this one (overloaded and exaggerated) points to one of the most common phobias, coulrophobia or fear of clowns, and I must cite once again Insidious where the smiling family traumatized more than one viewer simply by the use of this resource.
La caracterización del espectro me gustó bastante, aparentemente luce normal pero su sonrisa siniestra genera demasiada incomodidad, además la vemos descalza y con una manga del vestido mal puesta, lo que me hace pensar en un contexto más aterrador y profundo: ¿puede ser que a esa hora de la madrugada la hayan abusado y matado? ¿por eso aparece a esa hora para atormentar? además el maquillaje de esta (sobrecargado y exagerado) apunta a una de las fobias más comunas, la coulrofobia o miedo a los payasos, y debo citar una vez más a Insidious donde la familia sonriente traumatizó a más de un espectador simplemente por la utilización de este recurso.
I think that without a doubt the fact of employing bizarre horror for me is great, because far from this, we are already quite used to classic horror, and personally I refer to see scenes where the behaviour of some characters is erratic because usually these behaviours are not expected by the viewers.
Creo que sin lugar a dudas el hecho de emplear el terror bizarro para mi es genial, ya que lejos de esto, ya estamos bastante acostumbrados al terror clásico, y en lo personal refiero ver escenas donde el comportamiento de algunos personajes es errático porque usualmente estos comportamientos son poco esperados por los espectadores.
