A glimpse into the inner workings of Kpop, how do you make a band? Stray Kids survival programme (ENG/SPA)
Hello, people of the Internet, it is no secret that the Kpop industry is taking over the world and for this reason, many of you may have been curious to know what is the process to become an Idol and yes, there is a specific process, of course each entertainment company has its own rules but in general parameters, they all follow the same process created by the first entertainment company, SM Entertainment.
Hola, gente de Internet, para nadie es un secreto que la industria del Kpop se está tragando el mundo y que por esta razón a muchos de ustedes quizá les haya causado curiosidad saber cual es el proceso para ser Idol y es que sí, lleva un proceso especifico, claro que cada compañía de entretenimiento tiene sus propias reglas pero en parámetros generales, todas siguen el mismo proceso creado por la primera empresa de entretenimiento SM Entretaiment.
The show I want to review today is a door opener to this world from the middle faces of the Idol process, it comes from the second biggest company in Kpop, JYP Entertainment and it is about the process of a test group, to debut, Stray kids.
El programa que quiero reseñar hoy es un abre puertas a este mundo desde las faces medianas del proceso de ser Idol, viene de la mano de la segunda compañía más grande del Kpop, JYP Entretaiment y se trata del proceso de un grupo prueba, para debutar, Stray kids.
The programme starts from the company's Trainee Showcase, but for those who don't know anything about Kpop, I will briefly explain the process before this point so that you don't lose context.
El programa empieza desde el Show case de Trainee de la compañía, pero para quienes no sepan nada del Kpop, les explicaré brevemente el proceso antes de este punto para que no pierdan contexto.
Usually the applicants send videos singing, dancing and rapping (either female or male) to the company they choose, with this there is a pre-selection and the chosen ones sign a contract with the company, the company offers training in exchange for the idol paying for their education after debuting (the percentage will depend on the company) if they will charge half of the idol's income, more, less or all (the last case has decreased thanks to idol complaints and lawsuits) during this training and depending on how fast the trainee is, he/she will climb to the point where he/she will be chosen to be a soloist if that is what he/she wants, or join a group (sometimes the trainees themselves choose each other to make a band, the case of Stray Kids).
Usualmente los postulantes envían videos cantando, bailando y rapeando (sean mujeres u hombres) a la compañía que eligen, con esto hay una preselección y los elegidos firman contrato con la compañía, la compañía ofrece entrenamiento a cambio de que el idol pague su educación después de debutar (el porcentaje dependerá de la compañía) si cobrarán la mitad de los ingresos del idol, más, menos o la totalidad (el último caso ha mermado gracias a quejas de Idols y demandas) durante este entrenamiento y dependiendo de que tan rápido sea el trainee (aprendiz) irá escalando al punto en que sea elegido para ser solista si es lo que quiere, o ingresado a un grupo (a veces los mismos trainees se eligen entre sí para hacer un grupo, el caso de Stray Kids)
After a while, if the soloists, groups etc. are ready, they are chosen to perform in the company's show case, a small concert to which people from the audience and the CEO of the company are invited and from which they will choose those who have the option to debut and those who must continue working. The idea of inviting the public is that the boys get used to performing with people present and because nerves are the main test to overcome, at this point the Stray Kinds programme begins.
Después de un tiempo, si los solistas, grupos etc están listos, son elegidos para presentarse en el Show case de la compañía un pequeño concierto al que es invitada gente del publico y el C.E.O de la compañía, y de donde elegirán quienes tienen opción a debutar y quienes deben seguir trabajando. La idea de invitar publico es que los chicos se acostumbren a presentarse con gente presente y porque los nervios son la prueba a superar principalmente, en este punto empieza el programa de los Stray Kinds.
The Stray Kids competed against a band of girls for the chance to enter the debutante groups, although it seemed that the girls (usually more diligent and confident dancers) would be the ones chosen, in the end it was the boys who got the chance. According to the company's CEO, this was because the band on stage moved as part of the same body, which is essential for teamwork. This is the presentation of the boys during the show case:
Los Stray Kids competían contra un grupo de chicas por la posibilidad de entrar a los grupos de debutantes, pese a que todo auguraba a que ellas (por lo general más diligentes en baile y más seguras de sí mismas) serían las elegidas, finalmente fueron los chicos quienes obtuvieron la oportunidad. Según el CEO de la compañía esto se debido a que el grupo en el escenario se movía como partes de un mismo cuerpo, algo fundamental en el trabajo en equipo. Esta es la presentación de los chicos durante el Show case:
Bang Chan (the leader) had been a Trainee for 7 years, he knew the industry well and was the "teacher" of his colleagues, helping them to reinforce their skills, he gave Felix (an Australian member of Korean origin) language exercises to help him with fluency, and each one of them contributed knowledge of their speciality, Bang Chan also took his position as leader very seriously and did a very good organisational job.
Y es que Bang Chan (el líder) tenía 7 años siendo Trainee, conocía bien como se manejaba la industria y era el "profesor" de sus demás compañeros, ayudándolos a reforzar sus habilidades, le ponía ejercicios a Félix (integrante Australiano de origen coreano) del idioma para ayudarlo con la fluidez, y cada uno de ellos aportaba conocimiento de su especialidad, asimismo Bang Chan tomó muy en serio su puesto de líder e hizo un muy buen trabajo organizativo.
However winning the chance to debut was only the beginning, because during the show they had to complete missions successfully, whoever was behind in terms of performance would be eliminated from the band, this would mean going back (to before the show case and having to find another band and start all over again) in fact this is something that for example almost happened to Felix (one of the most popular members of the band at the moment) and his Korean was not very good, Therefore his raps were not smooth and well modulated and because of this he was eliminated, later another member was also eliminated, in the end, the CEO decided to bring them back because he knew they were talented but he wanted to scare the whole group from the loss so they would work harder for their final performance, where it would finally be seen if the band would debut in full. Fortunately Bang Chan got his dream of seeing his band debut in full.
Sin embargo que ganaran la posibilidad de debutar solo era el comienzo, ya que durante el programa debían cumplir con misiones satisfactoriamente, quien se quedara atrás en cuanto a desempeño, sería eliminado del grupo, esto supondría volver atrás (a antes del show case y tener que encontrar otro grupo e iniciar de nuevo) de hecho es algo que por ejemplo casi le pasa a Félix (uno de los miembros más populares del grupo actualmente) y es que su coreano no era muy bueno, por tanto sus raps no salían fluidos ni bien modulados y debido a esto fue eliminado, posteriormente otro miembro también, al final, el CEO decidió traerlos de vuelta porque sabía que eran talentosos pero quería asustar a todo el grupo ante la pérdida para que trabajaran más duro para su presentación final, donde se vería finalmente si el grupo debutaría completo. Afortunadamente Bang Chan consiguió su sueño de ver a su grupo debutar completo.
Although I consider that the company is not the best in terms of working conditions as opposed to companies like Pnation for example, there is no doubt that Stray Kids is one of the new school groups that have gained a lot of fame for their talent and creativity, their choreographies and songs (which by the way they create and compose themselves) have set a precedent. There are currently 8 members (one has left and is a soloist).
Aunque considero que la empresa no es la mejor de condiciones laborales contrario a empresas como Pnation por ejemplo, no hay dudas de que Stray Kids es de los grupos de nueva escuela que han ganado bastante fama por su talento y creatividad, sus coreografías y canciones (que dicho sea de paso crean y componen ellos mismos) han marcado un precedente. Actualmente son 8 miembros (uno se salió y es solista)

Este tipo de Realities Shows suelen ser bastante entretenidos y divertidos, sobre todo para los fans de los artistas que se presentan en pantalla, ya que tienen la oportunidad de conocerlos a fondo y descubrir su evolución en el escenario.
En este caso es mejor en el sentido que normalmente fuera de Corea se conocen ya a los grupos debutados más no en su pre-debut, en este caso se pudo ver ese proceso lo cual es gratificante 😍
