Death Whisperer [Movie Review] ESP/ENG
Hello, hello, people of the internet. How are you? I'm @bethyjade, and today I'm here to talk about a movie I discovered last weekend on Netflix, and of course, it's a horror film.
Hola Hola, gente de internet. ¿Cómo están? Yo soy @bethyjade y hoy vengo a hablarles de una película que descubrí durante el fin de semana pasado en Netflix, y como no podía ser de otra manera se trata de una película de terror.
I'm talking specifically about Death Whisperer, a Thai film, so with that in mind, I started watching it with great enthusiasm because Asian horror films tend to be very good. In this case, it was about a family living on a farm somewhere in Thailand. One time, when three sisters are going to school, they see a strange woman on the road, under the shade of a tree, who is clearly a ghost. However, after that terrifying apparition, the middle sister begins to experience erratic behavior that intensifies over time, until her older brother brings a wise old man home who explains to everyone that the girl is possessed by an evil entity that has attached itself to her body, and that to get rid of it, they must follow a series of steps.
Estoy hablando específicamente de Death Whisperer o como se conoce en español (Susurros mortales) se trata de una película tailandesa, así que bajo esta premisa comencé a verla con mucho entusiasmo porque los films de terror asiáticos suelen ser muy buenos. En este caso se trataba de una familia que vive en una granja en algún lugar de Tailandia. En una ocasión en que tres hermanas van a la escuela, ven en el camino, bajo la sombra de un árbol a una extraña mujer que a todas luces es un fantasma, pero el caso es que luego de esa terrorífica aparición, la hermana del medio comienza a experimentar un comportamiento errático el cuál se va intensificando con el pasar del tiempo, hasta que su hermano mayor lleva a la casa a un anciano sabio que les explica a todos que la chica está poseída por una entidad maligna que se ha aferrado a su cuerpo, y que para deshacerse de ella deben seguir una serie de pasos.
I'm going to break this film down, as I always like to do, point by point. First, I like to analyze the positive aspects. I think the performances stand out here. In my opinion, they were on point. Each one conveyed the emotions of their characters, but I especially think the eldest sister did the best. Then there's the photography: I think there was great work done here, with a good use of visual resources. I liked the aesthetics, the filters, and the color palette they used, creating a marked contrast between the first scenes (where everything is peaceful and joyful) and the last ones (where everything becomes gruesome and dark).
Voy a desglosar esta película tal como me gusta hacerlo siempre, punto por punto. En primer lugar me gusta analizar los aspectos positivos, en esto creo que destacan las actuaciones, las cuales en mi opinión estuvieron acertadas, cada quién supo transmitir las emociones de sus personajes, pero en especial creo que la mayor de las hermanas fue la que lo hizo mejor, por otra parte tenemos la fotografía: pienso que hubo un gran trabajo aquí, hay un buen manejo de recursos visuales, me gustó la estética, los filtros y la paleta de colores que usaron, generando un marcado contraste entre las primeras escenas (dónde todo es paz y alegría) y las últimas (dónde todo se vuelve escabroso y oscuro)
I like the fact that they used elements from Thai culture, such as talismans and the rituals they performed. There was, without a doubt, excellent handling of terror, especially in the sequence of scenes on the road while they try to get the girl to the hospital.
Me gusta el hecho de que hayan usado elementos propios de la cultura tailandesa, como talismanes y los rituales que llevaron a cabo, hubo, sin dudas, un excelente manejo del terror, sobre todo en la secuencia de escenas en el trayecto en carretera mientras intentan llevar a la chica al hospital.
However, one of the things that bothers me most about this film is the lack of consistency. How the hell are you going to fight a spirit using an "enchanted" gun? This makes no sense. Spirits are fought with prayers, prayers, or rituals; that's what you expect from a battle between good and evil in the movies, not shooting like a zombie from The Walking Dead. But the worst of all was the ending. Despite the incongruity of the fight, at the end of the day you feel relieved because it's all over, but then you're left with that feeling of frustration and anger when you realize it was all in vain. It's a very common resource today to leave open endings and continue the saga, but I personally think it's a mediocre and unsatisfactory resource for the audience. Isn't it better to close one cycle and then start another? Maybe it would be great if in a sequel Yak fought the entity in another family, after all, the wise old man had died and only he was left to apply what he had learned 🤷♂
Sin embargo una de las cosas que más me molesta de esta película es la falta de congruencia ¿Cómo rayos vas combatir a un espíritu usando una pistola "encantada"? esto no tiene ningún sentido, a los espíritus se les combate con rezos, oraciones o rituales, eso es lo que se espera de una batalla entre el bien y el mal en el cine, no lanzando disparos como si se tratase de un zombie de The Walking Dead, pero lo peor de todo fue el final, a pesar de la incongruencia del combate, al final del día te sientes aliviado porque todo ha terminado, pero luego te quedas con esa sensación de frustración y rabia al darte cuenta que todo fue en vano. Es un recurso muy usado hoy en día para dejar finales abiertos y continuar con la saga, pero yo particularmente pienso que es un recurso mediocre e insatisfactorio para la audiencia, ¿No es mejor cerrar un ciclo y luego iniciar otro? Tal vez sería genial que en una secuela Yak combatiera el ente en otra familia, después de todo, el anciano sabio había muerto y solo quedaba él para aplicar lo aprendido 🤷♂
Anyway, with such an absurd ending, which well, after all, is somehow anticipated from the first scene, I didn't feel like watching the sequel, so I wouldn't recommend watching this movie either, unless you don't pay much attention to details and just want to see a movie that scares you in some scenes.
En fin, con ese final tan absurdo, que bueno, después de todo nos lo anticipan desde la primera escena de alguna manera, no me quedaron ganas de ver la secuela, así que tampoco recomendaría ver esta película, a menos que no le prestes mucha atención a los detalles y solo quieras ver una película con la cuál asustarte en algunas escenas.

Looks like a movie where I need to manage my expectations... still thinking if to watch it or not.
I don't recommend it, but everyone has different tastes.

Sí, ultimamente es aburrido todo lo de terror, y cuando son buenas el final es malo
Bueno en eso tienes razón, como van a combatir con armas, es absurdo, pero el mundo de la ficción es así, sacan cada cosa jaja, pero a todas estas me suena entretenida esta, no soy fans de las películas de terror; sin embargo, hace mucho que no veo una, y de vez en cuando, no cae mal jeje, gracias por compartirla, la tendré en cuenta, saludos.
No cae mal verlas pero cuando son buenas haha la verdad me cuesta conseguir buenas películas de terror
