Gonjian - The Accursed Hospital, review (ENG/SPA)
Hello, people of the internet, everything alright? I have to say that while this film didn't blow me away it's pretty decent, I think what I like about it is the simplicity of the horror it handles, but of course that's something we'll explore below.
Hola, gente de Internet ¿todo bien? Tengo que decir que esta película si bien no me fascinó es bastante decente, creo que lo que me gusta es la simpleza del terror que maneja, pero claro, eso es algo que exploraremos a continuación.
The story of this film is inspired by the legends of the Gonjian psychiatric hospital, which was founded in the 80's as a fairly large hospital, began to admit many patients of whom (according to legend) their families stopped hearing news and later found out that they had died, although there was no clear record of how. According to the same legend the owner of the hospital was the devil on earth as it was said that he was possessed by dark forces that gave him a satirical, sadistic and chilling personality and with which he mistreated patients in unimaginable ways until they died.
La historia de esta película está inspirada en las leyendas del hospital psiquiátrico Gonjian, el cuál fue fundado en la época de los años 80's siendo un hospital bastante grande, comenzó a admitir muchos pacientes de los cuales (según la leyenda) dejaron de tener noticias los familiares para después enterarse de que habían muerto, aunque no había registro claro de como. Según la misma leyenda, el dueño del hospital era el demonio en la tierra ya que decían que era poseído por fuerzas oscuras que le otorgaban una personalidad satírica, sádica y escalofriante y con la cual maltrataba a los pacientes de maneras inimaginables hasta la muerte.
On the other hand, the doctors who started working within its walls felt fine for the first few days, but as time went by, for one reason or another, they ended up taking their own lives inside the hospital. Between the suicides of the health personnel and the disappearances of patients, the owner ended up fleeing to the United States to avoid answering for the facts and the hospital closed its doors, but the horror did not end there.
Por otro lado, los médicos que empezaban a trabajar dentro de sus muros se sentían bien los primeros días pero a medida que pasaba el tiempo, por algún motivo u otro, terminaban quitándose la vida dentro del hospital. Entre los suicidios del personal de salud y las desapariciones de los pacientes el dueño terminó huyendo a Estados Unidos para evitar responder ante los hechos y el hospital cerró sus puertas, sin embargo el horror no terminó allí.

With this legend as a backdrop, the film hits the ground running. It is about a group of young people who go to the hospital to record live the possible paranormal events that inhabit the walls, thus unleashing the curse of the place that haunts them and haunts them throughout their adventure.
Con esta leyenda de fondo, la película pisa fuerte. Trata de un grupo de jóvenes que van al hospital a grabar en vivo los posibles eventos paranormales que habitan dentro de los muros, desencadenando así la maldición del lugar que los acosa y persigue durante toda su aventura.
I have to admit that one of the things I like most about the film is the format. As some of you may already know, I'm learning Korean and one of the things I have to do is to watch Korean tvshows to get used to the language, my favourite shows are actually these kind, in which youtubers record their tour through haunted places, this film keeps the same format, that is to say, they take advantage of the angles of the cameras of the characters to record the film. At the beginning it is very much in the style of The Blair Witch Project and later it is in the style of a Korean ghost show. I'll leave you an example of these shows so that you can better understand the idea:
Tengo que admitir que una de las cosas que más me gusta en la película es el formato. Como algunos ya sabrán, estoy aprendiendo coreano y una de las cosas que debo hacer es consumir programas coreanos para ir relacionándome con el idioma, mis programas preferidos de hecho son este tipo de programas de miedo, en el cual los youtubers graban su recorrido por lugares embrujados, esta película guarda el mismo formato, es decir, aprovechan los ángulos de las cámaras de los personajes para grabar el film. Al inicio es muy al estilo del proyecto de la Bruja de Blair y después es estilo programa de fantasmas coreano. Les dejaré un ejemplo de estos programas para que entiendan mejor la idea:
The handling of the horror is kept simple and gradual (as it should be) and adds to the realism, as do the good performances. While it is a bit cliché about young people going into a haunted place and disappearing one by one, this film approaches it in a believable way as there are many young Koreans who in real life do this kind of content (as I have just shown you in the show above) so it doesn't feel cliché in this story.
El manejo del terror se mantiene simple y gradual (como debe ser) le aporta más realismo, asimismo las buenas actuaciones. Si bien es un poco cliché lo de que jóvenes se adentran a un sitio embrujado y van desapareciendo uno a uno, esta película lo aborda de una forma creíble ya que hay muchos jóvenes coreanos que en la vida real hacen este tipo de contenido (como de hecho se los acabo de demostrar con el programa de arriba) así que no se siente cliché dentro de esta historia.
I think there are a lot of good scenes that stand out in terms of horror, like one of the possessed girls reciting some kind of spell (her image has been used for many horror edits) the scene is quite scary and stressful as the "spell" or whatever the girl utters sounds terrifying and also when the other girl runs away, you can still hear the possessed friend running after her reciting whatever it is she recited.
Creo que hay muchas buenas escenas muy destacables en cuanto al terror, como una de las chicas poseídas recitando una especie de conjuro (su imagen se ha empleado para muchos edits de terror) la escena es bastante aterradora y estresante ya que el "conjuro" o lo que sea que la chica pronuncia suena aterrador, y además cuando la otra muchacha corre huyendo, aun se puede oír a la amiga poseída correr tras ella recitando lo que sea que recitara.
In summary the film is good, it is not predictable, at least in the events and also for being Korean (which are relatively new in horror and suspense) it is very good, it is noticeable that more and more Koreans are making an effort to step strong also in this genre, and as a lover of the horror genre it fills me with happiness. They are not as good as the Japanese, Chinese or Thais but they are learning very well how to do things right.
En resumen la película es buena, no es predecible, al menos en los eventos y además para ser coreana (los cuales son relativamente nuevos en el terror y el suspenso) es buenísima, se nota que cada vez más más coreanos se esfuerzan por pisar fuerte también en este género, y como amante del genero terror me llena de felicidad. No son tan buenos como los japoneses, chinos o tailandeses pero van aprendiendo muy bien como hacer las cosas bien.
