Let's talk about Barbarian (ENG/SPA) (SPOILERS ALERT)
Hello, people of the internet, today I'm a bit confused about this movie hahaha, and although I think it's good because it has a good approach and plot there are parts that I wasn't happy with, so I guess doing this review myself I'll have a clearer idea of whether I liked it more than I disliked it 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Hola, gente de Internet, hoy estoy un poco confundida respecto a esta película hahaha, y es que aunque considero que es buena porque tiene un buen planteamiento y trama hay partes con las que no quedé conforme, así que supongo que haciendo esta review yo misma tendré una idea más clara de si me gustó más de lo que me desagradó 🤣🤣🤣
Tess is a girl who has a job interview in another city, so she rents an Air bnb, however when she arrives she realises that another tenant also rented the house. Because there is a storm, she finally decides to accept to stay in the house with the boy who in fact offers her the room, what neither of them knows is that in the basement of the house there is a third occupant.
Tess es una chica que tiene una entrevista de trabajo en otra ciudad, por lo que renta un Air bnb, sin embargo al llegar se da cuenta de que otro inquilino también rentó la casa. Debido a que hay una tormenta, ella finalmente decide aceptar quedarse en la casa con el muchacho que de hecho le ofrece la habitación, lo que ninguno de los dos sabe es que en el sótano de la casa hay un tercer ocupante.
Beforehand I have to say that I will make spoilers because in order to explain the best parts of the film and story I can't exclude this. I have to start talking about the story, it's not exactly a new thing to talk about squatters (people living in other people's houses inside the walls) and incest either, this film mixes both. For we have a savage, terrifying and horrible "creature" that is nothing more than the result of years of incest. As we well know, incest (union between parents and children or between siblings) and endogamy (union between cousins or other relatives) causes malformations in the unborn foetus, and can generate from short stature (in other cases excess of stature) or blindness, to malformations in extremities, mental retardation, etc. It is well known that these unions are forbidden on a religious, moral and genetic level due to the complications they generate and because it is really something reprehensible, with the passage of time, if incest or inbreeding is maintained, future generations will be born with more and more problems until they result in something similar to the "villain" of this story.
De antemano debo decir que haré spoilers dado a que para explicar las mejores partes de la película e historia no puedo excluir esto. Tengo que empezar hablando de la historia, no es propiamente algo nuevo el tema de los ocupas (personas que viven en casas ajenas dentro de las paredes) y el incesto tampoco, esta película mezcla ambas cosas. Ya que tenemos "una criatura" salvaje, aterradora y horrible que no es más que el resultado de años de incesto. Como bien sabemos el Incesto (unión entre padres e hijos o entre hermanos) y la Endogamia (unión entre primos u otros parientes) causa malformaciones en los fetos en gestación, es así como puede generar desde baja estatura (en otros casos exceso de estatura) o ceguera, hasta malformaciones en extremidades, retraso mental, etc. Se sabe bien que estas uniones son prohibidas a nivel religioso, moral y genético debido a las complicaciones que generan y a que realmente es algo reprobable, con el paso del tiempo, si el incesto o endogamia se mantiene, las futuras generaciones van a nacer con más y más problemas hasta resultar en algo parecido a la "villana" de esta historia.
And while the premise is interesting and scary (you'll never look at Air bnb's the same way again) I feel that the story falls short. You are given very little context as to what spawned this villain, where she came from, you are only given a bit of context "the possible father-grandfather was kidnapping and raping women in the neighbourhood in the mid 80's in that house and that's why he had those tunnels in the basement" and then it's left to the viewer to draw their own conclusions. Since in the first appearance of the man we see him buying things for babies, we assume that the women he rapes end up getting pregnant, however it is mere speculation to say that these babies grow up and he rapes them again when they are older, they get pregnant, give birth and the cycle repeats, however it is the only way to explain the malformations and the mental disability of the villain. But I didn't like this, I hate films that with the excuse of "we leave it to the viewer's interpretation so that they can form hypotheses and make it the subject of discussion" end up being lazy and don't create depth around the story they want to tell.
Y aunque esta premisa es interesante y genera miedo (nunca volverás a ver los Air bnb de la misma forma) siento que a nivel de historia queda corta. Te dan muy poco contexto de lo que generó a esta villana, de dónde salió, solo te dan un poco de contexto "el posible padre-abuelo secuestraba y violaba a mujeres del barrio a mediados de los años 80 en esa casa, y es por eso que tenía esos túneles en el sótano" y luego le queda al espectador sacar sus propias conclusiones. Ya que en la primera aparición del hombre lo vemos comprando cosas para bebés, asumimos que las mujeres que viola terminan quedando embarazas, sin embargo ya es mera especulación decir que esas bebés crecen él las viola nuevamente cuando son mayores, quedan embarazadas, dan a luz y se repite el ciclo, sin embargo es la única forma de explicar las malformaciones y la discapacidad mental de la villana. Pero esto no me gustó, detesto las películas que con la excusa de "lo dejamos a interpretación del espectador para que formen hipótesis y sea tema de discusión" terminen siendo flojos y no crear profundidad en torno a la historia que quieren contar.
If in the end they are going to say that the real villain is the man who committed all the atrocities with these women and that the "villain" is just a result of this, then they should show the full scenes of the man literally kidnapping the women, delivering the babies, then a sequence where these babies grow up and the process is repeated, they should clearly show how the "villain" was born and her disabilities and malformations as a child, it should be specific, after all the man is the real villain! Then because of that lack of context we don't know how the old man ended up living in the basement and why, etc. It leaves more questions than answers and no, it's not fun to have to speculate about the story, it's boring and frustrating.
Si al final van a decir que el verdadero villano es el hombre que cometió todas las atrocidades con estas mujeres y que la "villana" solo es resultado de esto, entonces deberían mostrar las escenas completas del hombre literalmente secuestrando a las mujeres, asistiendo los partos, luego una secuencia donde estas bebés crecen y se repite el proceso, deben mostrar claramente como la "villana" nació y sus discapacidades y malformaciones de niña, debe ser especifico, después de todo ¡él es el verdadero villano! Entonces por esa falta de contexto no sabemos como el anciano terminó viviendo en el sótano y por qué, etc. Deja más preguntas que respuestas y no, no es divertido tener que especular sobre la historia, es aburrido y frustrante.
I have to say that I really liked the cinematography of the film and also its mise-en-scene and setting. It has very good shots and the locations fulfil the oppressive atmosphere that it should have. I think one of my favourite scenes is the chase of Tess, which generates a lot of anxiety and at the end there is an excellent shot of the "creature" disappearing in the darkness in a subtle way that helps a lot with the handling of terror of the film.
Tengo que decir que me gustó mucho la fotografía de la película y también su puesta en escena y ambientación. Tiene muy buenas tomas y las locaciones cumplen con el ambiente opresivo que debe tener, creo que una de mis escenas preferidas es la persecución de Tess, la cual genera mucha ansiedad y al final hay una toma excelsa de la "criatura" desapareciendo en la oscuridad de una forma sutil que ayuda mucho con el manejo del terror del film.
I like the design of the creature and although it seems exaggerated it is not, considering that people resulting from an inbred lineage look like this:
Me gusta el diseño de la criatura, y aunque parezca exagerada no lo es, tomando en cuenta que las personas resultantes de un linaje endogámico lucen así:
And these people live in better conditions than the "villain" of the film, who has no access to sanitary conditions, not even toilets, never socialised with anyone and also never saw sunlight, had no option to brush her teeth, thus causing their rottenness, etc. I think her appearance and behaviour is quite realistic for a person with a physical and mental deficiency from birth, and who also grew up far away from society and basic human needs.
Y estas personas viven en condiciones mejores que la "villana" de la película, la cual no tiene acceso a condiciones salubres, ni siquiera baños, nunca socializó con nadie y además tampoco pudo ver luz solar, no tuvo opción a lavar sus dientes, por tanto esto causó la podredumbre de estos, etc. Creo que su aspecto y comportamiento es bastante relista para una persona con una deficiencia física y mental de nacimiento, y quien además creció lejos de la sociedad y las necesidades básicas humanas.
On the other hand, I don't think it was necessary to exaggerate her strength to cause fear, she literally rips an arm off an individual and kills another by sticking her fingers in his eyes and then smashing his skull with her bare hands, something that no human can do, do you know how hard and resistant the human skull is? and no, incest and inbreeding do not cause this, in fact they make individuals more fragile, those scenes far from scaring me were ridiculous (the first death seemed more credible and therefore more terrifying).
Por otro lado, creo que no hacía falta exagerar su fuerza para causar miedo, literalmente le arranca un brazo a un individuo y mata a otro metiéndole los dedos en los ojos, y después rompiéndole el cráneo con sus propias manos, algo que ningún humano puede hacer ¿saben lo duro y resistente que es el cráneo humano? y no, el incesto y la endogamia no causan esto, de hecho hacen a los individuos más frágiles, esas escenas lejos de asustarme se me hicieron ridículas (la primera muerte sí me pareció más creíble y por tanto más aterradora)
