Boys Over Flowers
This is a South Korean series that aired back in the 2000s; I didn't watch it at the time, but I saw it recently and absolutely fell in love with the soundtrack. Its rhythms transport you straight back to those early 2000s days. My favorite song is "Stand By Me" because its cheerful beat perfectly brings back memories of my childhood—especially the vacations when my cousin (who is like a brother to me) would come over and stay for a while. My family who lived about eight hours away would also visit—we only saw each other during the holidays—and I think of those beach days... I don't know, that song really transports me back to such a beautiful time in my life. What do you all think? Does it bring those nostalgic 2000s years to mind for you?
Esta es una serie surcoreana que transmitieron por allá, por los años 2000, yo no la vi en su momento, pero la vi recientemente y no pude evitar amar con locura el soundtrack, ya que a través de sus ritmos te transportan directo a esos primeros años de los 2000, mi canción favorita es Stand By Me porque ese ritmo alegre me hace recordar perfectamente mi infancia, en especial, en especial las vacaciones cuando llegaba a mi casa mi primo, que es como mi hermano, y se quedaba una temporada aquí, también llegaba mi familia que vivía a unas ocho horas de aquí y solo nos veíamos en época de vacaciones, esos días de playa, no sé, de verdad que esta canción me transporta a esa época tan bonita de mi vida. ¿Qué opinan ustedes? ¿No les llega a la mente esos nostálgicos años 2000?

Of all the musicals, *Les Misérables* is one of my favorites—partly because the source material by Victor Hugo is a favorite of mine, and I believe the film adaptation was superb. This excellence extended beyond the screenplay to the songs, which perfectly captured the characters' emotions as depicted in the book. Among them, "I Dreamed a Dream" stands out to me; it brilliantly conveys the feelings of Fantine, who is consumed by hopelessness and disillusionment regarding the hardships she has endured. The song marks the nadir of her misfortune—a moment of utter defeat—highlighting her vulnerability and the pain stemming from her lost innocence, separation from her daughter, public humiliation, and the lack of understanding from a society that judges based on appearances without truly comprehending the situation. It speaks to the emotional clash between the hopeful youth she once knew—filled with grand, idealized expectations—and the harsh reality she is living. Anne Hathaway delivered a masterful performance of the song in the 2012 version.
De todos los musicales uno de mis favoritos es Los Miserables, ya que es mi libro favorito de Victor Hugo y creo que con esta película hicieron una gran adaptación, no solo en el guion, sino con las canciones que definían perfectamente las emociones de los personajes, basados en los hechos de los libros, pero entre todas ellas para mi destaca “I Dreamed a Dream” ya que destaca y transmite perfectamente los sentimientos de Fantine, quién se siente desesperanzada y decepcionada con todo lo que le tocó vivir en su vida, es una canción que marca el momento más álgido de su desgracia, el sentimiento de derrota, habla de la vulnerabilidad que siente y el dolor ante su inocencia perdida, la separación de su hija, el escarnio público, la falta de comprensión de la sociedad que solo juzga lo que ve y no entiende. La cancón habla del choque emocional ante la juventud llena de esperanzas que alguna vez ella tuvo, con esas grandes expectativas idealizadas, y la dura realidad que atraviesa. La canción fue magistralmente interpretada por Anne Hathaway en la versión del 2012.
Another musical that fascinates me is *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street*; the fifth track is my favorite. It is titled "My Friend" and is performed by Johnny Depp in the role of Benjamin Barker. In this piece, Benjamin grows wistful upon reuniting with his old friends—his razors—yet the moment takes on a darker tone driven by his thirst for vengeance. The use of rubies as an allegory for blood is striking and highly poetic; furthermore, he describes the razors as extensions of his own body, as if they were a part of him. The film was directed—naturally—by the great Tim Burton and features a stellar cast including Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, and Helena Bonham Carter. This song captures Benjamin’s psychological shift—though not exactly a character "evolution," as he transforms from a man consumed by grief into a dangerous, vengeful figure who is nearly devoid of scruples. I say "nearly" because I recall a scene where he refrains from killing a man upon seeing him with his family.
Otro musical que me fascina es Sweeney Todd: El barbero demoníaco de la calle Fleet, la quinta pieza es mi favorita, se llama “My Friend” y es interpretada por Johnny Depp en el rol de Benjamin Barker, en esta pieza Benjamin se pone melancólico por reencontrase con sus viejas amigas, sus navajas de afeitar, pero todo va adquiriendo un nuevo matiz más oscuro debido a su sed de venganza, la alegoría de los rubíes para describir la sangre es brutal y muy poética, además él describe las navajas como extensiones de su cuerpo, como si formaran parte de él. La película fue dirigida, ¿cómo no? Por el gran Tim Burton y cuenta con un gran elenco de la talla de Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall y Elena Boham Carter. Este tema habla de la transición psicológica de Benjamin, que no precisamente se trata de una evolución de personaje, ya que él pasa de ser un hombre consumido por el dolor, a un ser peligroso y vengativo, casi sin escrúpulos, y digo “casi” porque recuerdo que hay una escena donde él se abstiene de matar a un hombre al ver que estaba con su familia.

What lovely songs and soundtracks you’ve shared today. I always say that personal experiences are what matter most in a review, and your memories of being transported back to your childhood by that first song are beautiful.
I’ll tell you later that I absolutely love the next two, they’re very moving and from masterful works, with truly excellent vocals that manage to convey exactly what you’re talking about; they touch the heart and the audience. That says a lot about a soundtrack, without it, films, musicals and plays would all feel empty. Music is what conveys those emotions.
