review of "La Casa Muda" (The Mute House) (ENG/SPA)
Laura and her father go to look after and clean a house that is to be sold, the owner shows them the property (which, incidentally, has no electricity) and once he leaves and leaves them alone, extraordinary events begin to occur that give way to a rather peculiar and disturbing plot twist. Today we will talk about La Casa Muda.
Laura y su padre van a cuidar y limpiar una casa que debe ser vendida, el dueño les muestra la propiedad (que dicho sea de paso, no cuenta con luz eléctrica) y una vez que se va y les deja solos, empiezan a ocurrir sucesos extraordinarios que dan paso a un giro de trama bastante peculiar y perturbador. Hoy hablaremos de La Casa Muda.
Hello, people of the Internet. Today I want to talk to you about this Uruguayan film that surprised me a lot, I'm going to say it, usually latin horror and suspense films leave a lot to be desired because the genre itself is difficult and when you have little ingenuity and you need a big budget, the handling of horror is not just anything and I think that from the structure, these fail, I was surprised to see that this is one of the few with the exception to the rule.
Hola, gente de Internet. Hoy quiero hablarles de esta película Uruguaya que me sorprendió bastante, lo voy a decir, usualmente las películas latinas de terror y suspenso dejan bastante que desear, ya que el género de por si es difícil y cuando cuentas con poco ingenio además, necesitas un presupuesto bastante grande, el manejo del terror no es cualquier cosa y creo que desde la estructura, estas fallan, me sorprendió ver que esta película en particular es de las pocas con la excepción a la regla.
Let's start by talking about the cinematography, and that's because there is something curious to point out. This film was shot with a still camera in a single take, so you can assume that the stability and the shots are not as well taken care of as in other productions, however there are interesting shots, such as those that focus on Laura and then move upwards to focus on the focal point of the scene (the noise of the upper floor).
Empecemos hablando de la fotografía y es porque hay algo curioso que señalar. Esta película fue grabada con una cámara de fotos en una sola toma, así que supondrán que la estabilidad y los planos no están tan bien cuidados como en otras producciones, sin embargo hay planos interesantes, como esos que se enfocan en Laura y posteriormente se hacen ascendentes para focalizarse en el punto de atención de la escena (el ruido del piso superior)
Being a mostly dark film, the shadows of course are well defined, is the lighting in which they worked more, the light source in the film comes from the lamp of Laura, but not having the same resources of James Wan for example in Insidious (where during the climax also the only source of light was a lamp) in this film they put some subtle spotlights of white light, in addition to candles to illuminate a little more the rooms without exaggerating, so that the spectator could look with details what was happening in the scenes, without cutting the atmosphere and the darkness that is the resources for the suspense.
Siendo una película mayormente oscura, las sombras por supuesto están bien definidas, es la iluminación en la que trabajaron más, la fuente de iluminación en la película proviene de la lampara de Laura, pero al no contar con los mismos recursos de James Wan por ejemplo en Insidious (donde durante el clímax también la única fuente de luz era una linterna) en esta película pusieron algunos focos sutiles de luz blanca, además de velas para iluminar un poco más las estancias sin exagerar, para que el espectador lograra mirar con detalles lo que sucedía en las escenas, sin cortar la ambientación y la oscuridad que es el recursos para el suspenso.
The story and the performances are very good, the structure is also interesting. Despite taking place in one place and with only 3 actors, it doesn't bore, it keeps the viewer on the edge of the seat wondering what will happen.
La historia y las actuaciones son muy buenas, la estructura también es interesante. Pese a desarrollarse en un solo lugar y con 3 actores, no aburre, mantiene al espectador al borde del asiento preguntándose que pasará.
On the other hand, the story is inspired by a real crime that took place in Uruguay, and whose perpetrator was never found. In this way, the film seeks to "explain" the events of that night of terror.
Por otro lado, la historia está inspirada en un crimen real ocurrido en Uruguay, y cuyo perpetrador/ra nunca fue encontrado. La película busca "explicar" de esta manera los sucesos acontecidos en esa noche de terror.
I won't say more to avoid spoilers and although I can't give it a 10, it deserves at least an 8 from 1 to 10, quite recommended to pass the time.
No diré más para no hacer spoiler y a aunque no puedo darle un 10, si merece al menos un 8 del 1 al 10, bastante recomendada para pasar el rato.
