Cine TV Contesta #146 - The Island Between Tidess

The community contest was perfect timing for me, because just today I saw a movie that blew my mind. It’s a combination of horror, time travel, and supernatural events. As you watch the movie, you realice that elements of what I mentioned above are added, and you don’t really know where the story is going. The movie is The Island Between Tides, or La Hija Perdida in Spanish. It was released in 2024 and filmed in British Columbia, Canada.

The first thing we see is a girl playing at the water’s edge. Suddenly, she is guided by a musical melody to an island that appears when the tide is low. Her family searches for her and suddenly finds her walking where she got lost. She says she was only on the island for a few minutes and met a young woman who taught her a song, but in reality, she was missing for days.
Fifteen years pass and this girl (Lily), now a young woman, has a small son (Jared) who also hears the same melody. That’s when Lily decides to return to the island and find out what happened to her. She can’t return from the island that night because the tide has risen, and when she does the next day, 25 years have passed. Confused, she searches for her family and her son, who is now an adult, and realices that in addition to time travel, she also shares with her son the ability to see the dead.

Hey! We hadn’t finished understanding why the protagonist was traveling through time when there was something else to understand. Jared has not accepted his gift in the same way as Lily. He is a disturbed man, as he has had to live his whole life seeing people who are trapped in time and who can also see him. In Lily’s case, she has only been able to see them since she returned from the island this time. And I haven’t even mentioned that the family home is also haunted and is home to Mary Rose, which, incidentally, is the name of the book by James Matthew Barrie, the story on which this film is based.

Did I understand it? It was quite complicated to understand the supernatural dynamics of the island with some special people who heard the melody and thus found their way to this place where they felt at home. I think I still don’t fully understand how it works to see people who are no longer there but who were there and are now trapped in time, and how they are all connected to the island.

Although I know that Lily and Jared took the same path, I didn’t understand why and how that helps them. In conclusion, it’s a complicated movie that may need to be seen a couple of times to find details that explain a little more.
