I know this much is true - Miniseries review [ENG-ESP]

How dramatic can a series be? I think that everything that reality allows, and in many occasions reality can overcome fiction and although we think that the situations we are seeing on the screen are unbelievable and cannot happen or at least not to the same person, in many occasions we are inclined that it is not so far-fetched and we get to get into the story in such a way that we empathize with the characters and their suffering.

The Undeniable Truth is a family drama from beginning to end. A story of emotional suffering, of guilt, helplessness, will go, of searching for the truth but also of love. This series has 6 chapters and was released in 2020 on HBO.

Synopsis

Dominick and Thomas are identical twins. Thomas suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and for the past 20 years has been in and out of psychiatric centers, while Dominick has tried to lead a normal life while trying to help his brother.

Thomas’ latest attack puts him in a difficult situation in the face of justice given his condition and Dominick will have no peace of mind until he sees his brother safe.

Analysis and Opinion

The story we see it through the eyes of Dominick, although it takes place in the 90s the chapters are loaded with flashback that will tell us the life of the twins since childhood and we will go much further back in the life of the Italian grandfather who came to America to be an important man. Among so much drama also touches on the theme of racism at a time when Italian immigrants came to America with pretensions of greatness with the intention of perpetuating their blood only with pure Sicilians, at this point there is a hint from the beginning of the series but as it goes deeper into the story we will learn more about how these twins came into the world.

Dominick although he tries to always be with his brother and save him from himself is a man who also requires psychological help. He is a disturbed man with many attacks of will go, some caused by Thomas for everything he has had to go through because of his illness and others because he does not know how to save him or simply does not know how to express his frustration and that is why we see him constantly enraged almost with all the rest of the characters. He feels that his brother is a burden but he knows that Thomas has no one else in the world, I would say it’s a love hate relationship. He can’t help but love his brother but since he was little he has had to live with the responsibility of having a family member with schizophrenia. He also feels an emptiness because he doesn’t know who his real father is, something that has been with him since he was a child because his mother took that secret to the grave.

Thomas is kind, tender, without any kind of evil. In several occasions it is mentioned that he has never been aggressive but as it is normal in his illness he has a voice that speaks to him in his head and asks him to do things that although they do not attempt against any person outside of himself, for the system he is considered as a dangerous person.

Dominick tells us how those first symptoms of Thomas were at the beginning of the disease, how they were taken by the family: his mother, his stepfather Ray, who adopted them from a very young age and how he himself always felt responsible for his brother, he would never abandon him even if his own life was falling apart or was a total chaos.

The performances in this series are not of strong personalities, rather I would say they are quite bland, the only one that stands out is Mark Ruffalo. It’s amazing the interpretation of two identical but so different people, there was nothing that could tell you that it was the same person. His gestures, his body, his way of talking and walking were different and the best thing is that he transmits you that feeling of desperation in which you felt helpless. A lot of painful things happen to Dominick and not only to his soul but also to his body, let’s say that when he is in bad shape even the dog urinates on you.

Not everyone likes to spend 6 hours of their lives watching one misfortune after another, but as I said sometimes reality overcomes fiction and we see those misfortunes in our daily lives but we don't stop to think how bad a person can be having a bad time. I recommend this series, it helps you to empathize with other people's situations and I don't consider that it has been a flat story, with nothing to expect, rather I feel that I wanted to finish it to see the outcome and after knowing the end I was quite satisfied, sometimes we are unfair with life and with people.

¿Que tan dramática puede llegar a ser una serie? Yo creo que todo lo que la realidad se lo permita, y es que en muchas ocasiones la realidad puede llegar a superar la ficción y aunque pensemos que las situaciones que estamos viendo en la pantalla son increíbles y no pueden pasar o al menos no a la misma persona, en muchas ocasiones nos inclinamos en que no es tan descabellado y llegamos a meternos en la historia de tal manera que empatizamos con los personajes y su sufrimiento.

La innegable verdad es un drama familiar de principio a fin. Una historia de sufrimiento emocional, de culpa, impotencia, irá, de búsqueda de la verdad pero también de amor. Esta serie cuenta con 6 capítulos y fue estrenada en 2020 en HBO.

Sinopsis

Dominick y Thomas son gemelos idénticos. Thomas sufre de esquizofrenia paranoica y durante los últimos 20 años a entrado y salido de centros psiquiátricos, mientras que Dominick ha intentado llevar una vida normal a la misma vez que trata de ayudar a su hermano.

El último ataque de Thomas lo pone en una situación difícil ante la justicia dada su condición y Dominick no tendrá tranquilidad hasta no ver a su hermano a salvó.

Análisis y Opinión

La historia la vemos a través de los ojos de Dominick, aunque se desarrolla en los años 90 los capítulos vienen cargados de flashback que nos contarán la vida de los gemelos desde su infancia e iremos muchísimo más atrás en la vida del abuelo italiano que llegó a Estados Unidos para ser un hombre importante. Entre tanta drama también toca el tema del racismo en una época cuando los emigrantes italianos llegaban a América con ínfulas de grandeza con la intención de perpetuar su sangre solo con sicilianos puros, en este punto hay una insinuación desde el principio de la serie pero que a medida que se adentra en la historia nos enteraremos más de como llegaron al mundo estos gemelos.

Dominick aunque trata de estar siempre con su hermano y de salvarlo de él mismo es un hombre que también requiere de ayuda psicológica. Es un hombre perturbado con muchos ataques de irá, unos ocasionados por Thomas, por todo lo que ha tenido que pasar por su enfermedad y otros porque no sabe cómo salvarlo o simplemente no sabe cómo expresar su frustración y por eso lo vemos constantemente enfurecido casi con todo el resto de los personajes. Siente que su hermano es una carga pero sabe que Thomas no tiene a nadie más en el mundo, yo diría que es una relación amor y odio. No puede dejar de amar a su hermano pero desde pequeño ha tenido que vivir con la responsabilidad que es tener a un familiar con esquizofrenia. A demás siente un vacío por qué no sabe quién es su verdadero padre algo que lo ha acompañado desde pequeño porque su mamá se llevó ese secreto a la tumba.

Thomas es amable, tierno, sin ningún tipo de maldad. En varias ocasiones se hace referencia a que nunca a sido agresivo pero como es normal en su enfermedad tiene una voz que le habla en su cabeza y que le pide que haga cosas que aunque no atentan contra ninguna persona fuera de si mismo, para el sistema es considerado como una persona peligrosa.

Dominick nos cuenta como fueron esos primero síntomas de Thomas al inicio de la enfermedad, como eran tomados por la familia: su madre, su padrastro Ray, quien los adoptó desde muy pequeños y como él mismo siempre se sintió responsable de su hermano, nunca lo abandonaría así su propia vida se este derrumbando o sea un total caos.

Los interpretaciones en esta serie no son de personalidades fuertes, más bien diría que son bastantes insípidos, el único que destaca es Mark Ruffalo. Es increíble la interpretación de dos personas idénticas pero tan diferentes, no había nada que te pudiera decir que era la misma persona. Sus gestos, su cuerpo, su manera de hablar y caminar eran diferentes y lo mejor es que te transmite ese sentimiento de desesperación en el que te sentías impotente. A Dominick le pasan muchas cosas dolorosas y no solo del alma sino también del cuerpo, vamos a decir que cuando se está de mala hasta el perro te orina.

No a todo el mundo le gusta pasar 6 horas de su vida viendo una desgracia tras otra, pero como he dicho a veces la realidad supera a la ficción y vemos esas desgracias en nuestro día a día pero no nos paramos a pensar lo mal que lo puede estar pasando una persona. Recomiendo esta serie, te ayuda a empatizar con las situaciones de otras personas y no considero que haya sido una historia plana, sin nada que esperar, más bien siento que quería terminarla para ver el desenlace y después de conocer el final quedé bastante satisfecha, a veces somos injustos con la vida y con las personas.
