I thought it was just us who found the movie annoying and although I more or less understood the ending, I still missed a lot more.

oh i don't think it was just you. On popular review sites like RT and IMBD the comments that appear genuine are mostly negative. There are some genuine positive ones in there as well but most of the positive reviews seem fake and are there only to keep the score above a certain level. As I am sure you know these sites cannot be trusted and a studio could easily manipulate them by paying a company to make fake reviews. It wouldn't even be that difficult to pull something like that off. Just look at 28 years later, that movie sucks but has somehow managed to stay above 7/10 and only starts to drop after it is no longer in theaters. What an amazing coincidence the timing of the drop is!
