Review and opinion of the Spanish film La Huella del Mal [ENG-ESP]

This Spanish film is based on a novel of the same name (2019) by writer Manuel Ríos San Martín, who also happens to be the director of this film. So, I thought that since he was involved, he would portray in images what he had in mind when he created the story, and the characters would be as close as possible to those in the book. I haven’t read the book, so I can’t compare them or give an opinion on whether the writer and director achieved their goal. I’ll just settle for having seen the film. If anyone has read this book, please leave me a comment.

Está película española es basada en una novela del mismo nombre (2019) del escritor Manuel Ríos San Martín que casualmente es el director de esta película, por lo que pensé que al estar involucrado iba a retratar en imágenes lo que estaba pensado cuando creó la historia y los personajes iban a ser lo más o parecidos al libro. No he leído el libro así que no puedo compararlos o dar una opinión sobre si el escritor y director cumplió con el objetivo, solo me conformaré con haber visto la película, si alguien ha leído este libro puede dejarme un comentario.

It’s a suspenseful mystery film, the kind I like, set in a Spanish village called Atapuerca, home to the Center for Experimental Archaeology (CAREX). During a school field trip, some students find the body of a naked young woman in a position that mimics prehistoric burial practices. As the scene is identical to one found six years ago, and the case was never closed because the culprit was never found, the same investigators from six years ago are assigned to the new case, despite the fact that their previous collaboration did not end very well.

The film is not bad, but I think the director needed more time to include everything that I imagine was expanded upon in the book in terms of the relationships between the characters, so that it didn’t feel like the story was being rushed and there weren’t so many questions left unanswered or so many things that, in my case, I would have liked to see explored in more depth, such as in the case of Eva (the dead girl) and her brother Gabriel. What were these kids’ relatives doing? Did they know it wasn’t good but did nothing about it? With my twisted mind, I began to suspect them and immediately thought they were the murderers, as they had their reasons.

Es una película de suspenso y misterio de esas que a mí me gustan, ambientada en un pueblo de España llamado Atapuerca, donde se encuentra el Centro de Arqueología Experimental (CAREX). Durante una visita de un grupo colegial, unos estudiantes se encuentran el cuerpo de una joven desnuda y en una posición que imita a como se hacían los entierros durante la prehistoria. Al ser una escena igual a la encontrada hace seis años y el cual el caso no fue cerrado porque no se encontró el culpable, asignan para el nuevo caso a los mismos investigadores de hace seis años, el cual tiene una historia juntos que no terminó muy bien.

La película no es mala, pero creo que le falto tiempo al director para incluir todo lo que me imagino extendió en el libro en cuanto a las relaciones entre los personajes, de manera que no se viera como si se estuviera atropellando la historia y no quedarán tantas preguntas al aire o tantas cosas que en mi caso hubiera querido que se ahondara más, como en el caso de Eva (la chica muerta) y su hermano Gabriel, ¿Qué estuvieron haciendo los familiares de estos chicos? ¿Sabían que no era buena pero no hicieron nada? Apenas con mi mente retorcida empecé a sospechar, enseguida pensé que ellos eran los asesinos, pues tenían sus razones.

The students, who I imagine are archaeology majors, visit this center in the summer, and others have temporary jobs at the site. The first clue to discovering the murderer is which of the current collaborators was also there six years ago. That ended up being the most important question. What I wanted to mention about these students and collaborators is that they are totally immersed in the prehistoric era. You could say that they live the experience more like an obsession, trying to recreate a period of history when humans behaved like animals, so much so that their behavior can be funny. Daniel Horvath, who plays one of these collaborators, has a behavior that makes you laugh. I don’t know if this was the intention, but it was the result achieved.

I liked the twist at the end revealing the killer and the reasons that led them to commit the crime. I didn’t suspect it, nor did I imagine that it would be a crime of passion, but it also shows that each person has that wild side within themselves and that it only takes a moment of desperation or madness for it to come out, at which point all of humanity’s supposed evolution is lost. It’s a film that was made to be shown in theaters, although I don’t think it was very successful since it has all the hallmarks of a streaming platform film, and now you can find it on Netflix.

Los estudiantes que me imagino son de Arqueología, se resalta que visitan este centro en verano y otros tienen trabajo temporal dentro del yacimiento y la primera pista para descubrir al asesino, es quién de los actuales colaboradores estuvo también hace seis años. Esa terminó siendo la pregunta más importantes. Lo que quería comentar sobre estos estudiantes y colaboradores es que están totalmente inmersos en la era prehistórica, se pudiera decir que viven la experiencia más como una obsesión tratando de recrear un periodo de la historia donde los humanos se comportaban como animales, tanto que puede resultar gracioso el comportamiento de los mismos. Daniel Horvath quien interpreta a uno de estos colaboradores tiene un comportamiento que da risa. No sé si este era el propósito pero fue el resultado logrado.

El giro del final para descubrir al asesino y las razones que le hicieron cometer el crimen, me gustó, no lo sospechaba, como tampoco me imaginaba que tendría un carácter pasional, pero también expone que cada una de las personas tiene esa parte salvaje dentro si misma y que solo hace falta un momento de desesperación o locura para salir a relucir y en ese momento se pierde toda la supuesta evolución del hombre. Es una película que fue hecha para presentarse en cine, aunque no creo que haya tenido mucho éxito ya que tiene toda la pinta de una película de plataforma de streaming y ahora la puedes encontrar en Netflix.
