Review and opinion The Conjuring 4 [ENG-ESP]

Ever since I heard about this movie, I wanted to see it, but the truth is that horror movies scare me 🤭, so I never watch them when I’m alone. I had to wait until my husband was home, just like we did with all the Conjuring and The Nun movies. Even though they scare me, I’ve seen them all. In that sense, I’m quite masochistic, but when it comes to horror, I prefer those related to paranormal activities to those about a cold-blooded killer. Anyway, the important thing is that yesterday, Sunday, I finally got to see The Conjuring 4, and despite all the information on the Internet, I tried to avoid spoilers.

Desde que oí hablar de esta película, quería verla, pero la verdad es que las películas de terror me dan miedo 🤭, así que nunca las veo cuando estoy sola. Tuve que esperar a que mi marido estuviera en casa, igual que hicimos con todas las películas de Conjuring y La monja. Aunque me dan miedo, las he visto todas. En ese sentido, soy bastante masoquista, pero en lo que respecta al terror, prefiero las relacionadas con actividades paranormales a las que tratan sobre asesinos a sangre fría. En fin, lo importante es que ayer, domingo, por fin pude ver The Conjuring 4 y, a pesar de toda la información que hay en Internet, intenté evitar los spoilers.

I’ll start by saying that it didn’t scare me as much as the previous ones. For me, the first film left an indelible mark; I still see images from it popping into my head. In the case of this film, I think it spends a lot of time explaining the context and, unlike the previous ones, tells us more about Ed and Lorraine’s life in their early days as a family, helping others get rid of the entities that inhabited their homes. In the previous films, all we knew was that they had a daughter (Judy) who was never mentioned in the same way as her mother, but here we see that the girl was born under certain conditions and that, having inherited her mother’s ability to see beings who are no longer on this earthly plane, Lorraine seeks a way for her daughter to grow up as a normal girl, until her past catches up with her in what would be the final rite.

Ed and Lorraine retired in 1986 and do not want to take on any more cases because Ed has a heart condition and has suffered a heart attack, but this case is closely related to them and mainly to their daughter Judy, who, along with her boyfriend, will join the Warren team for the first time to help a family in Pennsylvania.

Empezaré diciendo que no me ha asustado tanto como las anteriores. Para mí, la primera película dejó una huella indeleble; todavía veo imágenes de ella apareciendo en mi cabeza. En el caso de esta película, creo que dedica mucho tiempo a explicar el contexto y, a diferencia de las anteriores, nos cuenta más sobre la vida de Ed y Lorraine en sus primeros días como familia, ayudando a otros a deshacerse de las entidades que habitaban sus hogares. En las películas anteriores, lo único que sabíamos era que tenían una hija (Judy) a la que nunca se mencionaba de la misma manera que a su madre, pero aquí vemos que la niña nació en determinadas condiciones y que, al haber heredado la capacidad de su madre para ver seres que ya no están en este plano terrenal, Lorraine busca la manera de que su hija crezca como una niña normal, hasta que su pasado la alcanza en lo que sería el rito final.
Ed y Lorraine se retiraron en 1986 y no quieren aceptar más casos porque Ed tiene un problema cardíaco y ha sufrido un infarto, pero este caso está muy relacionado con ellos y principalmente con su hija Judy, quien, junto con su novio, se unirá al equipo Warren por primera vez para ayudar a una familia en Pensilvania.

The film focused on Judy, her visions and encounters with the demon, as well as her relationship with her boyfriend Tony. Watching this film was more like saying goodbye to Ed and Lorraine and, at the same time, welcoming Judy and Tony, who would come to do the work they do. That’s the impression the whole plot gives, as we see Ed teaching Tony everything about the room where they keep objects that are possessed or were used in some kind of ritual, and Lorraine doing her thing with Judy. We know that the story told here is the last one recorded by the Warrens, and we don’t know for sure if their daughter continued the work, but this film gives us a lot to think about, even though the ending is like that of a novel, with a wedding and guests we’ve already seen in previous films.

As for the horror part, it is revealed throughout the film in the form of suspense, showing a hand, a face, and very subtle things, until it reaches its climax, which is when the ghosts appear. This time there is more than one, and they are quite ugly and aggressive. They are a little scary, and the situation becomes distressing. In that sense, the film is not far behind the previous ones, and it is very gratifying to see the protagonists doing what they know how to do and what we have seen them do in all the previous films: they are an excellent team that transcends the screen.

La película se centraba en Judy, sus visiones y encuentros con el diablo, así como en su relación con su novio Tony. Ver esta película fue más como decir adiós a Ed y Lorraine y, al mismo tiempo, dar la bienvenida a Judy y Tony, que vendrían a hacer el trabajo que ellos hacen. Esa es la impresión que da toda la trama, ya que vemos a Ed enseñándole a Tony todo sobre la habitación donde guardan los objetos que están poseídos o que se utilizaron en algún tipo de ritual, y a Lorraine haciendo lo suyo con Judy. Sabemos que la historia que se cuenta aquí es la última registrada por los Warren, y no sabemos con certeza si su hija continuó con el trabajo, pero esta película nos da mucho que pensar, aunque el final sea como el de una novela, con una boda y unos invitados que ya hemos visto en películas anteriores.
En cuanto a la parte de terror, se va revelando a lo largo de la película en forma de suspense, mostrando una mano, una cara y cosas muy sutiles, hasta llegar a su clímax, que es cuando aparecen los fantasmas. Esta vez hay más de uno, y son bastante feos y agresivos. Dan un poco de miedo, y la situación se vuelve angustiosa. En ese sentido, la película no se queda atrás respecto a las anteriores, y es muy gratificante ver a los protagonistas haciendo lo que saben hacer y lo que les hemos visto hacer en todas las películas anteriores: son un equipo excelente que trasciende la pantalla.
