Review of the Dept. Q series [ENG-ESP]

It is important to note that this series is an adaptation of the books by author Jussi Adler-Olsen and is part of a series of nine books, which have already been adapted in Denmark between 2013 and 2024, presenting six movies with the different stories. I haven’t seen any of those movies, so what I know is from the Netflix series that was released at the end of May and has nine chapters, dealing with the case presented in the first book.

Es importante señalar que está serie es una adaptación de los libros del autor Jussi Adler-Olsen y que forma parte de una serie de nueve libros, el cual ya han sido adaptados anteriormente en Dinamarca entre los años 2013 y 2024, presentando seis películas con las diferentes historia. No he visto ninguna de esas películas, así que lo que sé es de la serie de Netflix que fue estrenada a finales de mayo y que cuenta con nueve capítulos, tratando el caso presentado en el primer libro.

The first scene grabs you immediately. Three policemen enter a house where a crime apparently occurred, while looking for clues they find the suspect who shoots causing the death of a policeman, leaving another invalid and the third suffers a shot in the face, the bullet enters and exits without causing further damage. Detective Carl Morck is the one who, after a few months of recovery, returns to his job feeling traumatized by the death of the policeman and the current situation of his partner, Detective Hardy. Morck is not an easy person, he is arrogant, sarcastic with a very particular way of communicating showing superiority and egocentrism, so he is little appreciated among his co-workers.

Morck is assigned to head a new department in which the state wants to invest, which will investigate unsolved closed cases and will have as offices the basement of the building, alone and with many boxes to review closed cases, he asks for an assistant and is assigned to Akram, a civilian of Syrian origin who is a refugee in the UK and who has investigative skills and finally Rose joins them, a policewoman who after an inconvenience was assigned to the office as a secretary and who wants to return to action by asking to work in the department with Morck.

La primera escena te atrapa inmediatamente. Tres policías entran a una casa donde aparentemente ocurrió un crimen, mientras buscan indicios se encuentran con el sospechó que dispara ocasionando la muerte de un policía, deja inválido a otro y el tercero sufre un disparo en la cara, la bala entra y sale sin ocasionar mayor daño. El detective Carl Morck es quien luego de unos meses de recuperación regresa a su trabajo sintiendo trauma por la muerte del policía y la situación actual de su compañero el detective Hardy. Morck no es una persona fácil, es arrogante, sarcástico con una forma de comunicarse bastante particular demostrando superioridad y egocentrismo, por lo que es poco apreciado entre sus compañeros de trabajo.

Morck es asignado a encabezar un nuevo departamento en el que el estado quiere invertir, el cual investigará casos cerrados sin resolver y que tendrá como oficinas el sótano del edificio, solo y con muchas cajas que revisar de casos cerrados pide un asistente y le asignan a Akram, un civil de origen sirio que es refugiado en el Reino Unido y que posee habilidades para la investigación y por último se les une Rose una policía que luego de una inconveniente fue asignada a la oficina como secretaria y que desea regresar a la acción pidiendo trabajar en el departamento con Morck.

At the same time we see the life of Merritt Lingard, a lawyer with a domestic violence murder case. At first we don’t know what these two stories have in common, until the first case that Dept. Q will investigate is chosen and it is the case of Merritt Lingard, the lawyer who disappeared four years ago without a trace and was presumed dead, concluding that she committed suicide by jumping off a ferry.

The series makes you want to watch the chapters without rest, at every moment you are discovering something new about Merritt's life, not only in the work part, also in the personal and her childhood, so there is a lot of activity in the life of a person who at first seemed simple but we realize that she was not always the right lawyer wanting to eat the world but she is also a woman with a family, love life and a teenager who made mistakes. The dynamic between the investigators is very good, little by little they learn from each other and Morck accepts that he is not always right, seeing the differences between Akram and Morck was interesting but also very nice and educational.

Al mismo tiempo vemos la vida de Merritt Lingard, una abogada con un caso de asesinato por violencia doméstica. Al principio no sabemos que tienen en común estás dos historias, hasta que se escoge el primer caso que el Dept. Q investigará y es el caso de Merritt Lingard, la abogada que desapareció hace cuatro años sin dejar rastro y fue dada por muerta llegando a la conclusión que se suicidó al lanzarse de un ferry.

La serie te hace querer ver los capítulos sin descanso, a cada momento se está descubriendo algo nuevo sobre la vida de Merritt, no solo en la parte laboral, también en lo personal y su infancia, así que hay mucha actividad en la vida de una persona que al principio parecía simple pero nos damos cuenta que no siempre fue la abogada correcta con ganas de comerse al mundo sino que también es una mujer con familia, vida amorosa y una adolescente que cometió errores. La dinámica entre los investigadores es muy buena, poco a poco van aprendiendo uno del otro y Morck acepta que no siempre tiene la razón, ver las diferencias entre Akram y Morck fue interesante pero también muy agradable y educativa.

The nine chapters go pretty fast because although the main plot is Merritt’s case, there is also the investigation of Morck’s case, as well as Morck’s personal life at home and overcoming his trauma. It is a series that will surely have other seasons to present the rest of the cases presented by the author of the books. In particular I will be waiting for them, because it is true that it is my favorite genre so I have seen many stories and this one met my expectations.

Los nueves capítulos se van bastantes rápidos ya que aunque la trama principal es el caso de Merritt también está la investigación del caso de Morck, así como su vida personal en la casa y la superación de su trauma. Es una serie que seguramente tendrá otras temporadas para mostrar el resto de los casos presentados por el autor de los libros. En particular las estaré esperando, pues es cierto que es mi género favorito por lo que he visto muchas historias y está cumplió con mis expectativas.
