Many Germans left their country during and after World War I, and here in Venezuela, immigrants arrived who made their mountain village flourish. Through hard work, they managed to create a colony that remains a symbol of German heritage, as it is a village inhabited by the descendants of those first Germans who came to this country.

But not everyone came to Venezuela. I imagine that at that time many were looking for a way out of the social and economic problems their country was experiencing, and many settled in places far from civilization, as in the case of Dr. Ritter, who with his wife Dore settled in Floreana, an island in the Galapagos belonging to Ecuador. This film is based on the stories of the survivors of that group of people who left their country in the midst of an economic and social crisis to seek peace and build a new life.

Muchos alemanes abandonaron su país durante y después de la primera guerra mundial, nada mas aquí a Venezuela llegaron inmigrantes que hicieron florecer su pueblo en una montaña, donde con trabajo duro lograron crear una colonia que hasta este momento es símbolo de gentilicio alemán, pues es un pueblo habitado por los descendientes de esos primeros alemanes que llegaron a este país.

Pero no todos vinieron a Venezuela, me imagino que en aquel momento muchos estaban buscando una salida al problema social y económico que vivia su país y muchos se alojaron en lugares alejados de la civilización y es el caso del Doctor Ritter quien con su mujer Dore se estabilizaron en Floreana, una isla en los Galápagos perteneciente a Ecuador. Está película es basada en relatos de los supervivientes de aquel grupo de personas que dejaron su país en medio de una crisis económica y social para buscar paz y lograr construir una nueva vida.

I had no idea about this story, even though documentaries and series have been made about it and it has been referenced in other films. So, after watching it, I searched for information on the internet to find out what happened there, because when I started watching it, the only similarity that came to mind was Robinson Crusoe, and I did read that book in its entirety. But now let’s talk about what the film presents according to those testimonies and books that the survivors have published.

As I said, Dr. Ritter and his wife settle in Floreana, a totally uninhabited island, but he sends letters to Germany recounting his journey and what he has managed to build on the island, although I think his letters were misunderstood by the media, or he told the story in a simplistic way and sparked the interest of other people to embark on the same adventure as he did, as in the case of the Wittmer family, confirmed by Margret, his wife Heinz, and their teenage son.

No tenía idea de esta historia a pesar de que se han hecho documentales, series y se ha tomado referencia para otras películas, por lo que luego de verla busqué información en internet para conocer lo que allí pasó, porque cuando empecé a verla la única similitud que se me vino a la mente es con Robinson Crusoe y ese libro si lo leí completo. Pero ahora vamos a hablar de lo que la película presenta según esos testimonios y libros que las supervivientes han publicado.

Cómo dije el Doctor Ritter y su mujer se establecen en Floreana, una isla totalmente deshabitada pero él envía correos a Alemania contando su travesía y lo que ha logrado construir en la isla, aunque creo que sus cartas fueron mal entendidas por los medios o él narraba la historia de manera facil y despertó el interés de otras personas para lanzarse en esa aventura como lo hizo él, como es el caso de la familia Wittmer, confirmada por Margret, su esposa Heinz y su hijo adolescente.

The arrival of this family was not welcomed by the doctor and his partner, as they were there to find peace and quiet because the doctor was supposedly writing a manuscript that would change history, and at the same time they needed peace to continue with the treatment for Dore’s multiple sclerosis. The fact is that they were not friendly, but quite the opposite, quite hostile and rude, hoping that everything would go wrong for the new family and that they would decide to leave the island, so that they could be alone again. But the Wittmers were determined to build their home on this island, where drinking water was sorely lacking. The place where they settled should not even have been able to grow any kind of plant, although with water and fertilizing the soil, it was possible.

The third to arrive on this island was Baroness Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhory with her two lovers, Rudolph and Phillipson, who supposedly came with the idea of building a hotel on the beach and disrupting the tranquility that the other two families had achieved, because although they were not the best of friends, they did not bother each other. She sowed discord and wanted to take over everything and everyone, not caring that she had to steal food and commit other eccentricities.

La llegada de esta familia no fue recibida con buenos ojos por el doctor y su pareja, pues ellos estaban ahí para encontrar tranquilidad pues supuestamente el doctor estaba escribiendo un manuscrito que iba a cambiar la historia y al mismo tiempo necesitaban paz para continuar con el tratamiento para la esclerosis múltiple que Dore padecía. El caso es que no fueron amistosos sino todo lo contrario, bastantes hostiles y mal educados, esperando que a la nueva familia todo le saliera mal y decidieran irse de la isla, para ellos volver a estar nuevamente solos. Pero los Wittmer estaban decididos a construir su hogar en esta isla, donde hacía mucha falta el agua potable, el lugar donde se establecieron ni siquiera debería haber crecido ningún tipo de planta, aunque habiendo agua y fertilizando la tierra era posible.

Los terceros en llegar a esta isla es la baronesa Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhory sus dos amantes Rudolph y Phillipson que llegó supuestamente con la idea de construir un hotel a orillas de la playa y a alborotar la tranquilidad que las otras dos familias habían logrado, porque aunque no eran los mejores amigos tampoco se molestaban. Ella llegó a sembrar la discordia y a querer apoderarse de todo y de todos sin importarle tener que robar alimentos y otras excentricidades que logró hacer.

Apparently, this is a film that hasn’t been very well received, but I liked it quite a bit. The performances were excellent, and although the baroness was a detestable character, Ana de Armas did a great job playing her. I loved it. As did the others: Sydney Sweeney in the role of the sweet Margret de Wittmer, Daniel Brühl as her husband, Jude Law as Dr. Ritter, and Vanessa Kirby as Dore. Truly, no one can complain about the cast; it was top-notch.

I think this film captures what some people are capable of doing in extreme conditions. There will be those who want to rise up, work, and achieve their goals regardless of the difficulties, and others who will only want to take advantage of the work of others. Although one would think that in a place far from civilization, the few people who managed to get there would unite to grow, it turns out that the opposite is true and discord prevails. It’s a story that only ends well for one of the families, and in the end, only they know what they really experienced on that island, what hardships they had to endure, and what life was like with their few neighbors.

Al parecer está es una película que no logro tener muy buena aceptación, pero a mí me gustó bastante. Las actuaciones fueron excelentes y aunque la baronesa era un personaje detestable Ana de Armas logró hacer excelente, me encantó. Así como los demás, Sydney Sweeney en el papel de la dulce Margret de Wittmer, Daniel Brühl como su esposo, Jude Law como el doctor Ritter y Vanessa Kirby como Dore. De verdad que del elenco nadie se puede quejar, estuvo de primera.

Creo que está película atrapa lo que unas personas pueden llegar a hacer en condiciones extremas, habrán quienes quieran resurgir, trabajar y lograr los objetivos sin importar las dificultades y otros solo querrán aprovecharse del trabajo ajeno. Aunque uno pensaría que en un lugar alejado de la civilización las pocas personas que lograron llegar se unirían para crecer, resulta que sucede todo lo contrario y la discordia es la prevalece. Es una historia que solo termina bien para una de las familias y que al final solo ellos saben que fue lo que realmente vivieron en esa isla, cuáles fueron las necesidades por las que tuvieron que pasar y la convivencia que existió con sus pocos vecinos.
