30 years ago a pop star disappears without a trace, now he returns announcing a new album that will only be presented to a select few who will receive an invitation to spend the weekend in the singer’s company. The social networks and the press are in an uproar, all those who lived in the time of Moretti’s (El Debutante) fame want to be selected, but only five will be the lucky ones, among them showbiz people like journalists and presenters who in one way or another were involved with Moretti at the time; Ariel, a young journalist hungry for fame looking for an opportunity to write something important, an opportunity that has not been given to her at the publishing house where she works and now she will meet the most famous singer of an era and that she only knows from the records, she is not a fan like the rest of the guests.

Hace 30 una estrella del pop desaparece sin dejar rastro, ahora regresa anunciando un nuevo disco que solo será presentado ante unos pocos seleccionados a los que les llegará una invitación para pasar el fin de semana en compañía del cantante. Las redes sociales y la prensa se alborota, todos los que vivieron en la época de la fama del Moretti (El Debutante) quieren ser seleccionados, pero solo cinco serán los afortunados, entre ellos personas de la farándula como periodistas y presentadores que de una u otra forma estuvieron involucrados con Moretti en su momento; qué posibilidad de ser invitada tiene Ariel, una joven periodista hambrienta de fama en busca de una oportunidad para escribir algo importante, oportunidad que no se le ha otorgado en la editorial donde trabaja y ahora conocerá al cantante más famoso de una época y que solo conoce por los discos, no es una fan como el resto de los invitados.
Upon arriving at the place, Ariel is the only one who senses that things are not right, the inhabitants called the levelers, dress in blue which indicates that they live in a kind of cult and all have been recruited for being Moretti’s sycophants, they take away the cell phones of the guests and although the attention seems to be cordial, it is increasingly controlled by offering a companion to each guest. The first dinner is a feast although they share a loaf of bread to begin with, a scene that I found disgusting but the direction is great because it let me see from all angles what was going on.
The guests are disappearing with an excuse from the hosts and the rest of the guests do not see anything strange, they just feel happy to be there, drink and enjoy the attentions while every night they listen to songs from Moretti’s new album. But Ariel and her instinct as a journalist push her to investigate and learn more about the place and the people, their customs and everything they do, even unmasking Moretti if necessary.
Al llegar al lugar, Ariel es la única que siente que las cosas no están bien, los habitantes llamados los nivelistas, visten de color azul lo que indica que viven en una especie de culto y todos han sido reclutados por ser aduladores de Moretti, Les quitan los teléfonos celulares a los invitados y aunque la atención parece ser cordial, cada vez es más controlado ofreciendo un acompañante a cada invitado. La primera cena es un festín aunque para empezar comparten un pan, escena que me pareció asquerosa pero que la dirección es estupenda porque me dejó ver desde todos los ángulos lo que pasaba.
Los invitados van desapareciendo con una excusa de parte de los anfitriones y el resto de los invitados no ven nada extraño, solo se sienten dichosos de estar ahí, beben y disfrutan de las atenciones mientras cada noche escuchan canciones del nuevo álbum discográfico de Moretti. Pero Ariel y su instinto de periodista la impulsan a investigar y a conocer más del lugar y los nivelista, sus costumbres y todo los que hacen, hasta desenmascarar a Moretti si es necesario.
It is a film that keeps you in suspense, the film company A24 has accustomed us to this type of suspense, mystery and horror film as MaXXXine or Heretic that mix the genres very well. The performances of Ayo Edebiri as Ariel and John Malkovich as Alfred Moretti are the most outstanding, as they are the main characters, but they are also accompanied by Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, Stephanie Suganami and Melissa Chambers as the rest of the guests who behave like idiots and none of them is a relevant character.
I didn’t think it was a bad movie, on the contrary it plays quite well with the mystery that we unravel about Moretti and the novelists, the final explanation of why, makes it clear to me that the main characters got what they were looking for and that sometimes we become pawns without knowing it; I also liked the colors that were used for the outdoor scenes, the combination of the blue color of the costumes of all the levelers with the yellow, orange and brown tones of the sun, the earth, the wood, walls and everything. Yes it is a movie that I recommend if you like these genres, taking into account that it has some strong scenes involving blood and death but it is not much.
Es una película que te mantiene en suspenso, la empresa cinematográfica A24 nos tiene acostumbrados a este tipo de película de suspenso, misterio y terror como MaXXXine o Heretic que mezclan muy bien los géneros. Las actuaciones de Ayo Edebiri como Ariel y de John Malkovich como Alfred Moretti son las más destacables, pues son los personajes principales, pero también los acompañan Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, stephanie suganami y Melissa Chambers como el resto de los invitados que se comportan como idiotas y ninguno es un personaje relevante.
No me pareció una mala película, sino todo lo contrario juega bastante bien con el misterio que vamos desentrañando sobre Moretti y los novelistas, la explicación final del porqué, me deja claro que los personajes principales obtuvieron lo que buscaban y que en ocasiones nos convertimos en peones sin saberlo; también me gustaron los colores que se usaron para las escenas en el exterior, la combinación del color azul del vestuario de todos los nivelistas con los tonos amarillo, naranja y marrón del sol, la tierra, la madera, paredes y todo. Si es una película que recomiendo si te gustan estos géneros, tomando en cuenta que tiene unas escenas fuertes que involucran sangre y muerte pero no es mucho.
Me parece una película demasiado interesante; no había oído de ella, sin embargo, los filmes de este género donde nos mantienen en suspenso, son mis favoritos. Por otra parte; John Malkovich es un gran actor y he disfrutado muchas de sus películas. Definitivamente debo verla.
También me parece buen actor y su personaje es bien interesante. Espero que la veas.
